Conservation Ethics: The Web Linking Human And Environmental Rights, Meghan Sittler

The Earth should be seen as an ecological whole. Environmental and human rights should be fashioned in a similar horizontal plane rather than in the traditional concept of a vertically arranged hierarchy. Examining the management practices of vast ecosystems on two continents provides examples of the integral relationship of all organisms in an ecosystem. The Serengeti Ecosystem in Africa and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in the United States are characterized by both cultural and ecological extirpations. The comparing of cultural and ecological issues concerning these diverse and distinctive ecosystems demonstrates the intricate web connecting human and environmental rights.

Mormon Polygamy In The Nineteenth Century: The Practice Of "The Principle" In Reality, William Volf

During the nineteenth century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, encouraged the development of polygamous marriages. The primary rationale for the practice was to bring in as many pre-existing spirits into the present world and to allow all females the chance to be married. The practice of polygamy was the ideal marriage form and each church member was to behave in a manner with polygamy as a goal. It is found that among males, only the wealthy and higher level Church leaders were the members that such a practice benefitted. There is evidence that the additional …

A Geomorphology Of Megaliths: Neolithic Landscapes In The Alto Alentejo, Portugal, Gregory A. Pope, Vera C. Miranda

The Alentejo region of Portugal is known for a high concentration of Neolithic-aged megalithic monuments: tombs (dolmens or antas) and ceremonial features such as standing stones (menhirs) and stone circles (cromleques). Concentrations of these monuments tend to be found on or near weathered granite terrains. Unloading slabs and remnant corestones appear to be the stones of preference for megalith makers in the Alentejo district of Portugal. Some of the stones may have been imported from distant sources, but most appear to be of local origin. In general, most stones do not appear to have been altered much from their original …

An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.

This article queries whether an evolutionary analysis of rape may be more compelling in explaining a rape victim's fear than a defendant's sexual aggression. Such a victim-oriented approach could help legal decisionmakers assess the reasonableness of the victim's fear when determining whether sex was forced or threatened. These ideas are explored in the context of two well-known rape trials, State v. Rusk and State v. Smith. This article concludes that evolutionary biology can contribute to an understanding of rape. However, the supposed evolutionary underpinnings of male sexual aggression should not justify such behavior or render it acceptable as a criminal …

The Influence Of Spatial Reference Frames On Imagined Object-And Vvewer Rotations, Maryjane Wraga, Sarah H. Creem, Dennis R. Proffitt

The human visual system can represent an object's spatial structure with respect to multiple frames of reference. It can also utilize multiple reference frames to mentally transform such representations. Recent studies have shown that performance on some mental transformations is not equivalent: Imagined object rotations tend to be more difficult than imagined viewer rotations. We reviewed several related research domains to understand this discrepancy in terms of the different reference frames associated with each imagined movement. An examination of the mental rotation literature revealed that observers' difficulties in predicting an object's rotational outcome may stem from a general deficit with …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

A series of molybdenum−pterin complexes produced from reactions of molybdenum and pterin reagents in various oxidation states has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Prior difficulties in making oxidation state assignments for the metal center and coordinated pterin can be resolved through comparison of Mo 3d binding energies (BE) for these new complexes with the BEs of standard molybdenum complexes. XPS analysis of molybdenum−pterin complexes produced from reactions of Mo(VI) reagents with tetrahydropterins show binding energies that are shifted by 1.5−1.8 eV to lower energies as compared to the BEs observed for the oxo-Mo(VI) reagents.
