Microhabitat environments and occurrences of terrestrial plethodontid salamanders including Plethodon nettingi Green, Plethodon cinereus (Green), Plethodon wehrlei Fowler and Dunn, Plethodon glutinosus (Green), and Desmognathus ochrophaeus Cope were monitored over a 15 month period at high elevation sites in the Stuart Knob area of the Monongahela National Forest in eastern West Virginia. Environmental data collected for eight equal-sized study plots (8m² ) included relative humidity, air and soil temperatures, and lunar phase. Five hundred and twenty-five salamanders were captured in diurnal and nocturnal searches, and an additional 52 individuals were observed. It was found that the most common occurring …

Why is devolution gaining strength both in the United States and in other highly developed countries? This note looks at broad social and economic trends that may be contributing to the movement toward more local control of government operations. Among the points discussed are: the end of the cold war; the information age, the booming economy, the increasing globalization of the economy, the rise of the south; and society’s increased understanding of environmental issues. A concluding section comments on what it all means for regional scientists.

The capillary zone electrophoresis separation of various mixtures of saturated and unsaturated free fatty acids (FFAs) is performed using adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as an indirect photometric detection reagent. The presence of Brij in the electrolyte and a temperature of 40°C in the running buffer are required to improve solubility of the very long chain FFAs. The separation of C12-C31 differing by only one carbon is achieved using N-methylformamide (NMF)-dioxane (3:2), 40mM Tris, 2.5mM AMP, and 0.5% (w/v) Brij in approximately 40 min. However, baseline resolution of unsaturated isomers of FFAs (C14-C22) requires the presence of water, because water enhances the …

In analysis of a conserved region of proximal mouse chromosome 7 and human chromosome 19q, we have isolated a novel mouse gene, Zim1 (imprinted zinc-finger gene 1), encoding a typical Kruppel-type (C2H2) zinc-finger protein, located within 30 kb of a known imprinted gene, Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3). Our studies demonstrate that Zim1 is also imprinted; the gene is expressed mainly from the maternal allele and at high levels only during embryonic and neonatal stages. In contrast to most tissues, Zim1 is expressed biallelically in neonatal and adult brain with slightly more input from the maternal allele. Zim1 produces multiple …

In vitro assays of washed, excised roots revealed maximum potential ferric iron reduction rates of >100 μmol g (dry weight)-1 day-1 for three freshwater macrophytes and rates between 15 and 83 μmol (dry weight)-1 day-1 for two marine species. The rates varied with root morphology but not consistently (fine root activity exceeded smooth root activity in some but not all cases). Sodium molybdate added at final concentrations of 0.2 to 20 mM did not inhibit iron reduction by roots of marine macrophytes (Spartina alterniflora and Zostera marina). A database search revealed extensive sequence similarity between Streptomyces lividans plasmid pIJ101 and Streptomyces plasmid pSB24.2, which is a deletion derivative of Streptomyces cyanogenus plasmid pSB24.1. The high degree of relatedness between the two plasmids allowed the construction of a genetic map of pSB24.2, consisting of putative transfer and replication loci. Two pSB24.2 loci, namely, the cis-acting locus for transfer (clt) and the transfer-associated korB gene, were shown to be capable of complementing the pIJ101 clt and korB functions, respectively, a result that is consistent with the notion that pIJ101 and the parental plasmid pSB24.1 encode highly similar, if not …

Proteins mediating intercellular recognition face opposing selective forces as they evolve: purifying selection to maintain function, and diversifying selection to alter specificity. Lysin is a 16-kDa protein which enables sperm of free-spawning marine snails to make a hole in the vitelline layer (VE) surrounding conspecific eggs. Previous work on abalone (Haliotis spp.) has shown that positive selection promotes rapid interspecific divergence of lysin. Here, we present data on the specificity of VE dissolution by four species of teguline gastropods, along with lysin cDNA sequences. The teguline and abalone lineages diverged over 250 MYA. Objectives. This study evaluated the effect of socioeconomic status, as characterized by level of education, on morbidity and disability in the last years of life. Methods. The analysis used data from the National Health Interview Survey (1986-1990), with mortality follow-up through December 1991. Results. Among 10 932 decedents 50 years or older at baseline interview, educational attainment was inversely associated with long-term limitation of activity, number of chronic conditions, number of bed days, and days of short hospital stay during the year preceding the interview. Conclusions. Decedents with higher socioeconomic status experienced lower morbidity and disability and better quality of …

Elevated blood pressure (BP) is more common in relatives of hypertensives than in relatives of normotensives, indicating familial resemblance of the BP phenotypes. Most published studies have been conducted in westernized societies. To assess the ability to generalize these estimates, we examined familial patterns of BP in a population-based sample of 510 nuclear families, including 1552 individuals (320 fathers, 370 mothers, 475 sons, and 387 daughters) from Ibadan, Nigeria. The prevalence of obesity in this community is low (body mass index: fathers 21.6; mothers, 23.6; sons, 19.2; and daughters=21.0 kg/m2). The BP phenotype used in all analyses was created from …

By virtue of its potential effects on rates of energy expenditure, uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) is an obesity candidate gene. We identified nine sequence variants in UCP3, including Va19Met, Val102Ile, Arg282Cys, and a splice site mutation in the intron between exons 6 and 7. The splice mutation results in an inability to synthesize mRNA for the long isoform (UCP3L) of UCP3. Linkage (sib pair), association, and transmission disequilibrium testing studies on 942 African-Americans did not suggest a significant effect of UCP3 on body composition in this group. In a laboratory experiment, persistence of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgNPV) was significantly lower in marsh soil than in agricultural soil. AgNPV was inactivated significantly more quickly in soil at -0.3 bar water potential than in soil at water potentials of 0 bar or -5 bar. Loss of AgNPV activity was significantly faster in unautoclaved soil than in autoclaved soil. AgNPV stored in unautoclaved marsh water lost 99% of its activity within 64 d, whereas AgNPV in distilled water or autoclaved marsh water remained 98-99% active after the same time period. The effect of calcium silicate slag and soil sterilization on the natural suppressiveness of a Typic Acrustox (clay Dark Red Latosol - LEa) and the natural conduciveness of an Oxic Haplustoll (TRe) to Rhizoctonia solani were studied under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was a three-replicate completely randomized one, with 2 × 3 × 2 factorial combination of the following treatments: two soil kinds (LEa and TRe, collected at 0-20 cm layer); three treatments with and without soil sterilization, calcium silicate slag and nontreated control; and uninfested and infested with R. solani. The relative susceptibility of different instars of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), to a commercial formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner subsp. kurstaki, Dipel ES, was determined using diet incorporation. European corn borers exposed to Dipel during the 1st instar were much more susceptible than were older larvae. No significant differences in susceptibility were found among 3rd, 4th, and 5th instars at doses of 0.03-0.81 ml of Dipel per kilogram of diet. At high concentrations (2.43 ml/km of diet), 5th instars had significantly lower mortality than did 3rd or 4th instars. The LC50 and LC90 of the 5th instars …

The purpose of this study was to determine the personal and professional characteristics of six teachers who reported high developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices and six teachers who reported low developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices. The sample was identified using teachers' scores on a self-reported survey measure of developmentally appropriate practice based on the 1987 guidelines by NAEYC. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with open-ended questions. By providing an in-depth description as a literary portrait of each teacher, this study provides insight into the beliefs and practical knowledge that inform the teaching practices of 12 primary grade teachers. Field studies conducted in 1996 through 1998 evaluated grass control with the graminicides clethodim, fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and sethoxydim alone and in combination with bromoxynil. Sequential application of bromoxynil at 1.7 kg ai/ha 7, 3, and 1 day (d) before or 1, 3, and 7 d after each graminicide reduced antagonism of rhizome johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] control when compared with bromoxynil plus clethodim, fluazifop-P, or quizalofop-P. Antagonism of johnsongrass control associated with bromoxynil and graminicide mixtures reduced cotton yield 17%. The transport of sediment and particulate organic carbon (POC) in the Barataria Basin was examined using techniques from the fields of geochemistry, remote sensing and environmental modeling. Monthly (deposition) and decadal (burial) rates of sediment and POC transport were quantified from bottom sediment samples. Sediment and POC deposition rates, based on 7Be inventories, ranged from -1.6E3 to 1.42E4 g m-2 yr-1 and 122 to 1066 g C m-2 yr-1, respectively. Sediment and POC burial rates, based on excess 210Pb down-core distributions, ranged from 3.8E2 to 2.0E3 g m-2 yr-1 and 27 to 37 g C in 2 yr-1, respectively. Deposition …

White bass Marone chysops and walleye Stizostedion vitreum coexist in several of the large glacial lakes in eastern South Dakota. I collected age-1 and older white bass and walleye in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota during May, July and September, 1998 to determine food habits and diet overlap using percent by weight to describe diets and Schoener's index (Cxy) to determine diet overlap. Macroinvertebrates were common prey items for white bass in all length groups during all sample dates. The primary macroinvertebrates consumed by white bass were corixids, amphipods and dipterans. Physicochemical Influences On Parasites Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Randy C. Landry, William E. Kelso

We investigated prevalence and intensity patterns of nine parasite taxa in 244 age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) collected from lake (high dissolved oxygen levels), riverine (high current velocities), and swamp (hypoxic canals and bayous) sites (N=6) in the Atchafalaya River Basin during the 1996 flood pulse. Ectoparasites were dominated by monogenetic trematodes (prevalence=100%; median intensities 27–91 per host) and glochidia (prevalence > 96% at all sites, median intensities 47–148 per host), whereas Posthodiplostomum minimum (Trematoda), Caecincola spp. (Trematoda; C. parvulus and perhaps C. latostoma), Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus (Acanthocephala), and Proteocephalus ambloplitis (Cestoda) accounted for 94.6% of bass endoparasites. When primary forest in central Amazonia is cut and abandoned, the plant succession is dominated by Cecropia spp., whereas when it is cut and burned for pastures, the regrowth vegetation is dominated by Vismia spp. The bird communities of these two regrowth forest types were sampled at six sites (9-13 years old) using mist-nets and observations. Bird species richness was similar between the two forest types. Cecropia regrowth, however, was richer for strictly forest bird species than was Vismia regrowth. Mixed-flock species and ant-following birds were significantly more abundant in the Cecropia second growth, whereas nonforest insectivores and omnivores were …

Teen pregnancy (broadened to "premarital pregnancy" for research purposes) was investigated cross-culturally. Using the electronic Human Relations Area Files and literature review, attitudes toward premarital pregnancy, the incidence of premarital pregnancies, and outcomes of premarital pregnancies were compared in "African" and "Eurasian" social systems (as defined by Goody, 1976). Despite considerahle variance, there were no significant differences in approval or disapproval of premarital sex or pregnancy in African and Eurasian systems. There was no difference in incidence rates of premarital pregnancy in African and Eurasian systems; however. not taking marital status into consideration. developing countries have higher rates of adolescent …
