Religious Women, Medical Settings, And Moral Risk, Peggy Desautels Jan 1999

Religious Women, Medical Settings, And Moral Risk, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

As we think about the ethical issues surrounding women and aging, it is important to ask the following questions. What do women in our society actually experience at various stages of their life cycle? Which of these I experiences put women at moral risk? In what situations are women's senses of moral value and selfhood likely to be ignored or discounted? I, along with a number of feminist philosophers, advocate approaching feminist ethics by starting with women's actual situations and experiences.1 No doubt, a wide variety of aging women's experiences call for moral analysis. I focus here on the …

Effects Of Altering Freshwater Chemistry On Physiological Responses Of Rainbow Trout To Silver Exposure, Nicolas R. Bury, James C. Mcgeer, Chris M. Wood Jan 1999

Effects Of Altering Freshwater Chemistry On Physiological Responses Of Rainbow Trout To Silver Exposure, Nicolas R. Bury, James C. Mcgeer, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

The influence of different water Cl- (50–600 μM), Ca2+ (50–1,500 μM), Na+ (50–1,500 μM), or dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 0.31–5 mg/L) levels on silver-induced physiological and biochemical perturbations of rainbow trout were investigated. Fish were acclimated to soft water (50 μM; Cl-, Ca2+, and Na+), then exposed to 3.7 μg/L Ag (as AgNO3) for 6 h, which resulted in a reduction in Na+ influx from the water, an inhibition of gill sodium- and potassium-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+-ATPase) activity, and an accumulation of silver on …

Costs Of Chronic Waterborne Zinc Exposure And The Consequences Of Zinc Acclimation On The Gill/Zinc Interactions Of Rainbow Trout In Hard And Soft Water, Derek H. Alsop, James C. Mcgeer, D. Gordon Mcdonald, Chris M. Wood Jan 1999

Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

Juvenile rainbow trout were exposed to zinc in both moderately hard water (hardness 5 120 mg CaCO3/L, pH = 8.0, Zn = 150 μg/L or 450 μg/L) and soft water (hardness = 20 mg CaCO3/L, pH = 7.2, Zn = 50 μg/L or 120 μg/L) for 30 d. Only the 450 mg/L zinc–exposed fish experienced significant mortality (24% in the first 2 d). Zinc exposure caused no effect on growth rate, but growth affected tissue zinc levels. Whole body zinc levels were elevated, but gills and liver showed no consistent increases relative to controls over the …

The Physiological Basis For Altered Na+ And Cl- Movement Across The Gills Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) In Alkaline (Ph=9.5) Water, Michael P. Wilkie, Pierre Laurent, Chris M. Wood Jan 1999

The Physiological Basis For Altered Na+ And Cl- Movement Across The Gills Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) In Alkaline (Ph=9.5) Water, Michael P. Wilkie, Pierre Laurent, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

To test the hypothesis that internal ion imbalances at high pH are caused by altered branchial ion transporting capacity and permeability, radiotracers (24Na+ and 36Cl-) were used to measure ion movements across the gills of intact rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during 3 d exposure to pH 9.5. At control pH (pH 8.0), the trout were in net ion balance, but by 8 h at high pH, 60%–70% reductions in Cl- influx (Cl) and Na+ influx (JNa/in) led to net Cl- and Na+ losses of -200 …

Quantifying The Surface Geometry Of Titanium Implant Material By Different Methods Of Analysis, Clara Pimienta, Rashad Tawashi Jan 1999

Quantifying The Surface Geometry Of Titanium Implant Material By Different Methods Of Analysis, Clara Pimienta, Rashad Tawashi

Cells and Materials

Biomaterial implant manufacturers have used rough surfaces to ensure better biocompatibility, less rejection and better adaptation of implants in the body. Proper characterization of biological interactions and biocompatibility of biomaterials requires a thorough understanding of surface complexity. Surface roughness has often been shown to be important in influencing biological reactions with the surface. Previous communications from our laboratory have described a dynamic active vision system (MVS camera) capable of measuring three-dimensional coordinates of titanium implant material surfaces. Fractal analysis, due to its straightforward relationship to texture, is used to characterize the degree of irregularity of a surface and is expressed …

Biomimetic Habitats For Cells: Ordered Matrix Deposition And Differentiation In Gingival Fibroblasts Cultured On Hydroxyapatite Coated With A Collagen Analogue, Rajendra S. Bhatnagar, Jing Jing Qian, Anna Wedrychowska, Eric Dixon, Nancy Smith Jan 1999

Biomimetic Habitats For Cells: Ordered Matrix Deposition And Differentiation In Gingival Fibroblasts Cultured On Hydroxyapatite Coated With A Collagen Analogue, Rajendra S. Bhatnagar, Jing Jing Qian, Anna Wedrychowska, Eric Dixon, Nancy Smith

Cells and Materials

In tissues, cells attach and migrate on collagen. Interaction with collagen modulates cell proliferation and differentiation. We propose that similar environments may be constructed by immobilizing collagen-derived cell-binding peptides in a three-dimensional (3-D) template. We identified a cell binding domain of type I collagen and showed that a 15-residue synthetic analogue (P-15) binds cells with high affinity. In the present study, we compared the behavior of human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) in culture on hydroxyapatite (HA) and on HA-P-15. HGF cultured on HA formed sparse monolayers with little order and deposited a scant matrix. HGF on HA-P-15 formed highly oriented 3-D …

Is Science Value Free?: Values And Scientific Understanding, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Exploring the role of values in scientific inquiry, Hugh Lacey examines the nature and meaning of values, and looks at challenges to the view, posed by postmodernists, feminists, radical ecologists, Third-World advocates and religious fundamentalists, that science is value free. He also focuses on discussions of 'development', especially in Third World countries.

Effect Of Atmospheric Co2 Enrichment On Root Growth And Carbohydrate Allocation Of Phaseolus Spp., Katrina J. Salsman, Dean N. Jordan, S. D. Smith, D. S. Neuman Jan 1999

Effect Of Atmospheric Co2 Enrichment On Root Growth And Carbohydrate Allocation Of Phaseolus Spp., Katrina J. Salsman, Dean N. Jordan, S. D. Smith, D. S. Neuman

Life Sciences Faculty Research

A glasshouse experiment was conducted with plants of Phaseolus grown in liquid culture. Root growth parameters (biomass, diameter, length, growth rate, zone of cell division), root rheological components (wall extensibility, water potential yield threshold, water potential), shoot growth, carbon allocation, and abscisic acid (ABA) concentration were measured in Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray at ambient (550 μmol mol−1) and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations. For contrast, measurements of above‐ and belowground growth were conducted on Phaseolus vulgaris L. in the same treatments. Under nonlimiting conditions of water and nutrients, elevated CO2 increased root and shoot growth of P. acutifolius …

A Floristic Study Of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, Sonoma County, California, Frederica S. Bowcutt

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

A ist of 400 vascular plants was compiled for Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, a 1142 hectare (2820 acre) park in the outer North Coast Ranges within Sonoma County and adjacent western Napa County, California. Relatively undisturbed stands of native perennial bunchgrasses occur the understory In portions of both the oakwood land and the mixed evergreen forest. Grasslands on serpentine in the park are typically dominated by Nassella. One of the sttlte's eastentmost coast redwood forests occurs in the park. Nonnative Centaurea solstitialis rapidly invades annual grasslands and other disturbed in the park. The California Oepanment of and Recreation (DPR) …

Potential Utility Of Chloroplast Trnl (Uaa) Gene Intron Sequences For Inferring Phylogeny In Scrophulariaceae, C. Edward Freeman, Ron Scogin Jan 1999

Potential Utility Of Chloroplast Trnl (Uaa) Gene Intron Sequences For Inferring Phylogeny In Scrophulariaceae, C. Edward Freeman, Ron Scogin

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Whereas chloroplast DNA-derived sequence data from protein coding regions have been utilized successfully at many taxonomic levels in recent years, sequences which are variable enough to allow for efficient phylogenetic inference (maximum information with relatively low sequencing costs and effort) at the subfamilial level huve been few. Sequence data were obtained in this study from a noncoding region, the trnL (UAA) gene intron, from a selection of taxa from the Scrophulariaceae and closely related families (representing 41 species in 26 genera). Groups of species from commonly recognized tribes and subtribes were included to determine if these taxa were grouped together …
