The Effects Of Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) On Zooplankton Community Structure In Depot Pond Nh And A Comparison Of Seven New Hampshire Lakes, S. R. Bradt, C. Chungu Jan 1999

The Effects Of Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) On Zooplankton Community Structure In Depot Pond Nh And A Comparison Of Seven New Hampshire Lakes, S. R. Bradt, C. Chungu

Center for Freshwater Biology

Physical, chemical and biological features of seven New Hampshire lakes were examined in September and October of 1997. Zooplankton communities exhibited evidence of “top-down” control in Milton Three Ponds (Depot, Norteast, and Townhouse Ponds), showing effects of a planktivorous fish, Alosa pseudoharengus: small mean body size, dominance of small grazers such as Bosmina, and absence of large grazers such as Daphnia. Phosphorus concentrations were positively correlated to fluorescence of all water fractions, chlorophyll a and a phytoplankton biotic pollution index (modified from Hillsenhoff, 1978), revealing a level of “bottom-up” control.

Swosu Fact Book Fall 1999, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the eighth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Effects Of Stress From Mine Drainage On Ecosystem Functions In Rocky Mountain Streams, Dev Niyogi Jan 1999

Effects Of Stress From Mine Drainage On Ecosystem Functions In Rocky Mountain Streams, Dev Niyogi

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research in this dissertation tested a hypothesis that relates biodiversity, community biomass, and ecosystem function to a gradient of stress. Biodiversity was predicted to have a low threshold of response to stress, while biomass and function were predicted to be stable or increase under low to moderate stress and decrease only under high stress. This hypothesis was tested by examination of biological communities and ecosystem functions in mountain streams under stress from mine drainage. Mine drainage presents both chemical (low pH, dissolved metals) and physical (deposition of metal oxides) stresses on stream biota.

Occurrence And Reproduction Of The Alabama Shad, Alosa Alabamae Jordan And Evermann, In The Ouachita River System Of Arkansas, Thomas M. Buchanan, Josh Nichols, Don Turman, Colton Dennis, Stuart Woolridge, Brett Hobbs

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The anadromous Alabama shad, Alosa alabamae, has drastically declined in abundance in recent decades throughout its historic range and has previously been reported in Arkansas from only five localities. Three of those locality records are pre- 1900. Sampling by seine in the Ouachita River drainage system of southern Arkansas in July and August of 1997 and 1998 produced more than 300 juvenile A. alabamae from two localities on the Little Missouri River and four localities on the Ouachita River. One record of an adult Alabama shad, taken on 4 April1997 by an angler below Remmel Dam on the Ouachita River, …

Revised List Of Arkansas Terrestrial Mollusks With Notes On The Geographic Distribution Of Species, Brian F. Coles, Gerald E. Walsh

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A revised list of of Arkansas terrestrial mollusks is presented, based on the authors' collections, incorporating data from the scientific literature and taking into account recent changes in taxonomy and species concepts. 144 species are recorded for Arkansas, of which 127 represent the autochthonous fauna of the state. The biogeographical position of Arkansas is reflected in its land mollusks, i.e., approximately 40% of Arkansas species are also widely distributed in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, 12% are more widely distributed to the north, 11% are typical of the Gulf Coastal Plain, 14% form a "Mid Western" assemblage …

Derivation Of Equations Of Motion For A Four Link Robotic Leg For A Walking Vehicle, Andrew B. Wright Jan 1999

Derivation Of Equations Of Motion For A Four Link Robotic Leg For A Walking Vehicle, Andrew B. Wright

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A four degree of freedom leg for a walking robot has been modeled using Newton's method. Unlike robot manipulators, which have a fixed base, a leg model must include inertial forces due to base motion. These forces have been included in the formulation. These equations can be used for design, simulation, and control. The inverse kinematics for this leg are also presented. This allows the joint angles to be computed from a desired foot-hold position.

In The Shadows: The Search For Identity In The Writings Of Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherrie Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, And Julia Alvarez, Marcy Wood Benincasa

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

For years, the voice of the Chicana has been silenced by oppression. Anglos, Mexicans, and Chicanos have intentionally created such an oppression upon Chicanas that they were never allowed to tell stories of their own ideas, fears, and dreams. They were merely meant to be a voiceless servant to the male gender.

This master’s thesis will examine the racial and gender oppression that Chicanas Cisneros, and Julia Alvarez — focusing primarily on their attempts to establish a gender have faced over the centuries, beginning with the days of Malintzin and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, and continuing until the …

A Vegetation Analysis Of Plant Communities In And Around Selected Holding Ponds At Mcclintic Wildlife Management Area, Mason County, West Virginia, Russell Bowman Shrader Jan 1999

A Vegetation Analysis Of Plant Communities In And Around Selected Holding Ponds At Mcclintic Wildlife Management Area, Mason County, West Virginia, Russell Bowman Shrader

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study was conducted as an analysis of vegetation in and around four ponds at McClintic Wildlife Management Area (MWMA), located in Mason County, West Virginia. The MWMA is the former West Virginia Ordnance Works (WVOW), having served as a trinitrotoluene (TNT) manufacturing site from 1941-1946. Such history presents the area with unique conditions resulting in diverse types and amounts of plants, since any type of forest disturbance, regardless of cause, alters ecosystem functions. This project was originally designed as part of a groundwater pump-and-treat plan for MWMA, where potential impacts of groundwater removal to ponds and the associated plant …

Nuclear Fuel Pellet Inspection Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shahla Keyvan, Xiaolong Song, Mark Kelly Jan 1999

Nuclear Fuel Pellet Inspection Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shahla Keyvan, Xiaolong Song, Mark Kelly

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nuclear fuel must be of high quality before being placed into service in a reactor. Fuel vendors currently use manual inspection for quality control of fabricated nuclear fuel pellets. In order to reduce workers' exposure to radiation and increase the inspection accuracy and speed, the feasibility of automation of fuel pellet inspection using artificial neural networks (ANNs) is studied in this paper. Three kinds of neural network architectures are examined for evaluation of the ANN performance in proper classification of good versus bad pellets. Two supervised neural networks, back-propagation and fuzzy ARTMAP, and one unsupervised neural network called ART2-A are …

"Epidemic" Depression In School-Age Youth, Trudy L. Erickson Jan 1999

"Epidemic" Depression In School-Age Youth, Trudy L. Erickson

Graduate Research Papers

With the traditional image of children as happy and care-free, it has been troubling to think of them suffering the effects of major depression and dysthymia. Successful intervention for.depressive youth is complicated by failure to diagnose, limited referral or consuItation, and resolute parental denial.

The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader about depression in today's student population. Depression will be defined and described as it is manifested in youth. Typical symptoms and proposed etiologies will be discussed. Finally, suggested interventions will be addressed, although research concerning interventions for depressed youth, particularly children, has been sparse.
