Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger Jan 1999

Planning Prices And Livestock Budgets For Farm Management Programs, Burton Pflueger

SDSU Extension Circulars

The budgets in this publication are based on approved farming practices and nutritionally balanced rations. Feed ingredients are priced on their comparative feed values. Com is used as the base for feed grain and other grains are priced based on their relative feed value to com. Alfalfa hay is used as the base for roughage. All roughage and succulents are priced as a percent of alfalfa hay. The livestock husbandman who uses the least-cost rations should not see significant changes in profitability by interchanging feed ingredients.

Response To Dietary Dilution In An Omnivorous Freshwater Turtle: Implications For Ontogenetic Dietary Shifts, Shannon J. Mccauley, Karen A. Bjorndal

Biological Sciences

Several species of freshwater turtles in the family Emydidae undergo an ontogenetic dietary shift; as juvenile turtles mature, they change from a primarily carnivorous to a primarily herbivorous diet. It has been hypothesized that this shift results from an unfavorable ratio of gut capacity to metabolic rate that prevents small reptiles from processing adequate volumes of plant material to meet their energetic demands. Effects of dietary dilution on intake were evaluated in two size classes of red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) to test whether small reptiles have a lower capacity to compensate for low-quality diets through increased intake …

Characterization Of Lake Littoral Zone Habitats And Invertebrate Communities In Northern Glaciated Plains And Northwestern Glaciated Plains Ecoregions, Corey W. Braskamp, N. H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 1999

Characterization Of Lake Littoral Zone Habitats And Invertebrate Communities In Northern Glaciated Plains And Northwestern Glaciated Plains Ecoregions, Corey W. Braskamp, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

The objective of this project was to characterize lake littoral habitat and macroinvertebrate community structure among two ecoregions in eastern South Dakota. Water temperature, conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, substrate particle size, vegetation biomass, shoreline slope and invertebrate samples were collected from twelve lake basins in the Northern Glaciated Plains (NGP, n=8) and Northwestern Glaciated Plains Ecoregions (NWGP, n=4). Five random locations were sampled from each basin during the growing season on one date in 1996 and two dates in 1997 and 1998. Over half of all habitat and invertebrate measurements displayed greater coefficients of variability from NGP sites. Higher percentages …

Bisexual Jurisprudence: A Tripolar Approach To Law And Society, Rachel Haynes Jan 1999

Bisexual Jurisprudence: A Tripolar Approach To Law And Society, Rachel Haynes

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Part I of this Review will briefly assess the principal arguments in Colker's book. In Part II, Colker's book will be situated within the larger currents of the discussion concerning bisexuality and the arguments for a bisexual jurisprudence. Part III critiques Colker's concept of a bisexual jurisprudence as applied to sexual hybrids from the standpoint of an identity, as well as a legal, skeptic. Part IV will sketch out some important implications for the advancement of a bisexual jurisprudence as well as question the need for a bisexual jurisprudence. This review concludes that the addition of a bisexual jurisprudence, like …

Ontogenies Of Phototactic Behavior And Metamorphic Competence In Larvae Of Three Species Of Bugula (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt, Robert M. Woollacott Jan 1999

Ontogenies Of Phototactic Behavior And Metamorphic Competence In Larvae Of Three Species Of Bugula (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt, Robert M. Woollacott

Biological Sciences

The free swimming larvae of many marine invertebrates actively respond to light. Light cues can be used to regulate position in the water column and to facilitate encountering sites suitable for metamorphosis. We examined the ontogeny of larval phototaxis and the ontogeny of metamorphic competency in larvae from three congeneric species of bryozoans. Larvae of Bugula neritina are positively phototactic on emergence from the brood chamber, whereas larvae of B. simplex and B. stolonifera appear initially photoneutral when populations of larvae are examined. Larvae of all three species become photonegative with time. Temporally coincident with this change to negative phototaxis …

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett Jan 1999

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett

Social Sciences

Mussel shells from central California coastal archaeological sites record changes in sea surface temperatures in the past 2000 years. Water temperatures, inferred from oxygen isotopes in the shells, were about 1°C cooler than present and stable between 2000 and 700 yr ago. Between about 700 and 500 yr ago, seasonal variation was greater than present, with extremes above and below historic levels. Water temperatures were 2-3°C cooler than today 500-300 yr ago. The interval of variable sea temperatures 700-500 yr ago partially coincided with an interval of drought throughout central California. A coincident disruption in human settlement along the coast …
