Behavior Of Melanoma Cells In Cell And Organ Cultures: Use Of Biomaterials To Activate Cells, J. L. Duval, N. Faucheux, R. Warocquier-Clérout, M. D. Nagel Jan 1999

Behavior Of Melanoma Cells In Cell And Organ Cultures: Use Of Biomaterials To Activate Cells, J. L. Duval, N. Faucheux, R. Warocquier-Clérout, M. D. Nagel

Cells and Materials

It is well known that cell behaviors such as adhesion, proliferation and various synthesis are initiated from transmembrane signals. This study uses biomaterials as primary messengers of the cell activation pathways, and we have analyzed the effects of two biomaterials on highly metastatic tumor cells. B16F10 melanoma cells formed heterogeneous populations whose size varied with cell differentiation. In long-term organ cultures grown comparatively on AN 69 and Cuprophan (a biomembrane known to activate cells), we found that Cuprophan increased both adhesion and proliferation of small melanin-rich cells which represented differentiated melanocyte&. In dissociated cell cultures, the rate of early cell …

In Vitro Comparative Biocompatibility Testing Of Carbofilm Coated And Uncoated Polyetherimide For Cardiovascular Application, M. Bosetti, S. Mazzarelli, L. Nicolais, L. Ambrosio, M. Cannas Jan 1999

In Vitro Comparative Biocompatibility Testing Of Carbofilm Coated And Uncoated Polyetherimide For Cardiovascular Application, M. Bosetti, S. Mazzarelli, L. Nicolais, L. Ambrosio, M. Cannas

Cells and Materials

When blood contacts the surface of a material, several processes take place including the activation of coagulation and immune systems. The aim of this work is to study in vitro the biological reactions seen from the point of view of hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of a new polymer suggested as an artificial surface for cardiovascular applications: Carbofilm® coated polyetherimide (C®PEI) in comparison to polyetherimide (PEI), the uncoated form. PEI and C®PEI showed no signs of acute cytotoxicity although following long term incubation with PEI cytotoxicity was somewhat increased; both materials supported good endothelial cell adhesion with a higher level of cell …

On The Extinction Of Species In Jointly Determined Stochastic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi Jan 1999

On The Extinction Of Species In Jointly Determined Stochastic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The sizeable literature on extinction in economics has paid scant attention to the problem of constructing measures of species extinction. Moreover, this literature has not studied the question of species extinction in stochastic systems that are jointly determined. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to use probability theory to construct a measure of species extinction in jointly determined ecological-economic systems.

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson Jan 1999

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson

All Graduate Projects

Relatively little research was encountered which attempted to measure the effectiveness of an integrated curriculum over a more traditional course of studies. The results that were articulated seemed to indicate that students in classrooms using an integrated curriculum approach did as well or better than students experiencing a more traditional approach. This was especially true in the area of conceptual understanding. The purpose of this project was to design and develop a model program that integrated Language Arts, Social Studies and the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements for the seventh grade students at Manson Secondary School.

Characterization Of Water Quality And Phytoplankton Dynamics In The Cooling Pond Of The Ottertail Power Plant, Milbank, Sd, Amy L. Gronke, N. H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 1999

Characterization Of Water Quality And Phytoplankton Dynamics In The Cooling Pond Of The Ottertail Power Plant, Milbank, Sd, Amy L. Gronke, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Ottertail Power Plant maintains a 350-acre artificial pond to provide cooling water to the boilers within their plant. Over the past several years, plant managers have witnessed frequent blooms of noxious algae, fish kills, fish stunting and odor problems within the pond and calcium carbonate build-up on structures within the plant. The objective of this project was to develop baseline data describing current physical, chemical and biological conditions within the cooling pond. Characteristics measured were water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, total hardness, nitrate and ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, water transparency, chlorophyll a and total and relative abundance of phytoplankton. …
