Osteopathy And Resistance To Vitamin D Toxicity In Mice Null For Vitamin D Binding Protein, Fayez F. Safadi, Paul Thornton, Holly Magiera, Bruce W. Hollis, Michael Gentile, John G. Haddad, Stephen A. Liebhaber, Nancy E. Cooke
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
A line of mice deficient in vitamin D binding protein (DBP) was generated by targeted mutagenesis to establish a model for analysis of DBP's biological functions in vitamin D metabolism and action. On vitamin D-replete diets, DBP-/-mice had low levels of total serum vitamin D metabolites but were otherwise normal. When maintained on vitamin D-deficient diets for a brief period, the DBP-/- but not DBP+/+, mice developed secondary hyperparathyroidism and the accompanying bone changes associated with vitamin D deficiency. DBP markedly prolonged the serum half-life of 25(OH)D and less dramatically prolonged the half-life of vitamin D by slowing its hepatic …

X-Ray Diffraction And Scanning Electron Microscopy Analyses Of A Gallium-Based Dental Restorative Alloy, Randa E. Shaker, William A. Brantley, Qiang Wu, John C. Mitchell
Cells and Materials
Specimens of a gallium-based dental alloy were prepared with different condensation techniques, with and without the removal of a surface layer, and after aging for 2 hours at 50°, 100° and 150°C. X-ray diffraction at times ranging from 10 minutes to 1 day showed the development of the four matrix phases (ß-Sn, CuGa2, Ga28Ag72, and In4Ag9) during the setting reaction. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of specimens loaded to failure revealed brittle fracture, with greater porosity for hand-condensed specimens, and provided insight into crack propagation processes. Aging increased …

Formation Of Cement Lines, But Not Laminae Limitantes, Requires Contact Of Differentiating Osteogenic Cells To Solid Surfaces, M. M. Hosseini, A. Shiga, J. E. Davies
Cells and Materials
We designed in vitro experiments to address the hypothesis that cement lines and laminae limitantes are structurally distinct as a result of cell contact, or absence of cell contact, during their elaboration. We subcultured young adult primary rat bone marrow cells in well inserts with polycarbonate membranes of 0.45 µm pore size, which allowed protein but not cell passage. The cells, extracellular matrix, lower side of the membrane and the surface of the polystyrene culture well were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The cells elaborated a bone-like matrix on top of the membrane. In such cultures the …
Pharmacokinetics Of Trazodone And Its Major Metabolite M-Chlorophenylpiperazine In Plasma And Brain Of Rats, C. Lindsay Devane, David W. Boulton, Lisa F. Miller, Ronald L. Miller
Pharmacokinetics Of Trazodone And Its Major Metabolite M-Chlorophenylpiperazine In Plasma And Brain Of Rats, C. Lindsay Devane, David W. Boulton, Lisa F. Miller, Ronald L. Miller
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Sprague–Dawley rats were used as models for single trazodone administration (males), continuous administration and dose proportionality experiments (males, females, pregnant females). Plasma and brain tissue were analysed for trazodone and its active metabolite, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP). Fetal exposure to trazodone and m-CPP was assessed and differences in their steady-state plasma concentration were sought between adult males and females. Both trazodone and m-CPP rapidly appeared in plasma and brain tissue following a single intraperitoneal trazodone dose with brain concentrations exceeding those in plasma. Plasma concentrations of m-CPP were lower than those of trazodone but exceeded them in brain tissue. Chronic administration using …

A Limnological Assessment Of Russell Pond, Woodstock, New Hampshire, Michael Bailey, Tara Davignon
A Limnological Assessment Of Russell Pond, Woodstock, New Hampshire, Michael Bailey, Tara Davignon
Center for Freshwater Biology
A limnological survey was conducted during 17-18 September, 1998 to characterize the trophic state of Russell Pond, a 15.8 Ha natural Lake located in Woodstock, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Physical, biological and chemical parameters were measured to assess the health of the lake and changes from previous studies. Russell Pond is oligotrophic with high Secchi disk depths (13.8 m), low phosphorus levels (3.8 µg L1) and low Chlorophyll a concentration (0.5 µg L-1). Peridinium (Dinophyceae) dominated (64%) the net phytoplankton. Calanoid copepods (Diaptomidae) constituted 87.5% of the crustacean zooplankton. The lake is at risk for acidification because of low acid …

Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Although considerable attention is devoted to environmental monitoring and assessment with respect to both pollutants and the status of particular plant or animal populations, less attention is devoted to assessing people's attitudes about the relative importance of ecological resources. In this paper we examine the attitudes and perceptions about ecological resources of people living around the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina. Our overall hypothesis is that people who are directly affected by the possible outcomes and consequences of a particular hazard (i.e., those people employed at SRS) will undervalue the risks and overvalue the potential …

Ec99-1563 Corn Rootworm Management, Robert J. Wright, Lance J. Meinke, Keith J. Jarvi
Ec99-1563 Corn Rootworm Management, Robert J. Wright, Lance J. Meinke, Keith J. Jarvi
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Corn rootworms (Diabrotica spp.) are one of the most economically important corn insects in Nebraska. The western corn rootworm, D. virgifera virgifera LeConte, and the northern corn rootworm, D. barberi Smith and Lawrence, are the most economically important rootworm species in Nebraska. A third species, the southern corn rootworm, D. undecimpunctata howardi Barber, causes little economic damage to corn and has not been shown to overwinter in Nebraska. This publication will focus on the biology and management of the western and northern corn rootworms.

G99-1384 Gray Leaf Spot Of Corn, James Stack
G99-1384 Gray Leaf Spot Of Corn, James Stack
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
All corn hybrids and inbreds are susceptible to gray leaf spot in varying degrees. This NebGuide discusses the symptoms, impacts and management of this disease.
Corn is grown throughout Nebraska on over 8 million acres of land; approximately 5 million acres are irrigated. The market is segmented into seed corn, field corn and specialty corns (e.g., high oil, high amylose and white corn). Field corn represents the largest portion of the acreage grown. To varying degrees, all corn hybrids and inbreds are susceptible to gray leaf spot disease.
Gray leaf spot is a significant disease worldwide. It has been present …
The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki
The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.
