The Role Of Surface Roughness For Implant Incorporation In Bone, A. Wennerberg
The Role Of Surface Roughness For Implant Incorporation In Bone, A. Wennerberg
Cells and Materials
A careful topographical characterization is important for reliable interpretation of the role of implant surface roughness in bone incorporation. In this paper, the currently available measuring instruments and evaluation techniques are described and discussed first, than literature on the role of surface roughness for cell and bone tissue reactions in vitro and, with special emphasis, the in vivo studies are reviewed. Finally, the results from a series of the authors own animal studies evaluating screw-shaped implants with different surface roughnesses are summarized. The results demonstrated firmer bone fixation for blasted implants than for turned ones. A blasted surface with an …

Preliminary In Vivo Studies Of A New Injectable Bone Substitute, F. Millot, G. Grimandi, P. Weiss, G. Daculsi
Cells and Materials
Calcium-phosphate materials have been increasingly employed in orthopedic and dental applications in recent years and are now being developed for use in noninvasive surgery or as carriers for drug delivery systems. We developed an injectable bone substitute (IBS) for percutaneous orthopedic surgery which uses a biphasic calcium-phosphate (BCP) mixture composed of hydroxyapatite (60%) and ß-tricalcium phosphate (40%), together with a polymer (hydroxy-propyl-methyl-cellulose, HPMC) as a carrier. The best BCP/polymer ratio was determined to achieve the highest mineral phase in the composite and provide the rheological properties required for injectable material.
The in vivo biocompatibility and biofunctionality of IBS were …

Habitat Associations Of Migrating And Overwintering Grassland Birds In Southern Texas, Lawrence D. Igl, Bart M. Ballard
Habitat Associations Of Migrating And Overwintering Grassland Birds In Southern Texas, Lawrence D. Igl, Bart M. Ballard
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We report on the habitat associations of 21 species of grassland birds over- wintering in or migrating through southern Texas, during 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. Ninety percent of our grassland bird observations were made during winter and spring, and only 10% occurred during fall. Grassland species made up a high proportion of the total bird densities in grassland and shrub-grassland habitats, but much lower proportions in the habitats with more woody vegetation. Fewer grassland species were observed in grassland and woodland than in brushland, parkland, and shrub-grassland habitats. Grassland birds generally were found in higher densities in habitats that had woody …

Influence Of Aqueous And Solid-Phase Fe(Ii) Complexants On Microbial Reduction Of Crystalline Iron(Iii) Oxides, Matilde Urrutia, Eric E. Roden, John M. Zachara
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The influence of aqueous (NTA and EDTA) and solidphase (aluminum oxide, layer silicates) Fe(II) complexants on the long-term microbial reduction of synthetic goethite by Shewanella alga strain BrY was studied. NTA enhanced goethite reduction by promoting aqueous Fe(II) accumulation, in direct proportion to its concentration in culture medium (0.01-5 mM). In contrast, EDTA failed to stimulate goethite reduction at concentrations e1 mM, and 5 mM EDTA enhanced the final extent of reduction by only 25% in relation to nonchelator controls. The minor effect of EDTA compared to NTA, despite the greater stability of the Fe(II)- EDTA complex, likely resulted from …
Application Of Polymerase Chain Reaction To The Diagnosis Of Infectious Diseases, David N. Fredricks, David A. Relman
Application Of Polymerase Chain Reaction To The Diagnosis Of Infectious Diseases, David N. Fredricks, David A. Relman
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
PCR and other sequence-based microbial detection methods, once considered to be only research tools, are being used increasingly in the clinical microbiology laboratory. As this technology expands into the clinical arena, clinicians will need to learn its advantages and limitations so that sound judgments can be made. Astute clinicians know that results of blood culture reports, whether positive or negative, must be interpreted using an understanding of the test employed and an assessment of the clinical scenario. Similarly, infectious diseases practitioner will need to expand their understanding of PCR-based diagnostics so that these powerful tests are used appropriately.
It is …

Bartonella henselae and B. quintana induce an unusual vascular proliferative tissue response known as bacillary angiomatosis (BA) and bacillary peliosis (BP) in some human hosts. The mechanisms of Bartonella-associated vascular proliferation remain unclear. Although host factors probably play a role, microbial coinfection has not been ruled out. Because of the vascular proliferative characteristics noted in both Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and BA and occasional colocalization of KS and BA, the possibility was explored that KS-associated herpes virus (KSHV) might be associated with BA lesions. Tissues with BA and positive and negative control tissues were tested for the presence of KSHV …

Swallow Summer. Charles R. Brown. 1998. The University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, NE. 371 pages. ISBN 0-8032-6145-4.
This book, Swallow Summer, is a popular account of the Browns fifteenth year at Cedar Point Biological Station in Keith County, Nebraska. Brown presents a daily log of the activities that he undertakes for the 1995 field season, describing the work supporting his research program. In the preface, Brown hopes Swallow Summer can explain his fascination with Cliff Swallows and why he enjoys his research. His intent is to describe "the challenges, thrills, and frustrations that come with studying wild animals in the …

Light and electron microscopy reveal that the morphologically well-differentiated petiolar nectaries of Chamaecrista fasciculata, Senna hepecarpa, and S. marilandica have an unusually simple anatomy consisting of an epidermis immediately subtended by a mass of small, loosely-packed parenchyma cells. Vascular strands from the petiolar bundles enter the nectary and terminate as phloem within or near this parenchyma. In mature, secreting nectaries, the cuticle of the epidermis extends between the epidermal cells and into the nectary parenchyma, where it occupies, but does not occlude, much of the free space of this tissue. The cutin is not found below the level …

The Potential And The Pitfalls Of Habitat Conservation Planning Under The Endangered Species Act, Shi-Ling Hsu

Editors' Summary: The ESA is simultaneously the most popular and most hated of environmental statutes. Conservationists fervently support the ESA's mission of preventing the extinction of our country's fish, wildlife, and plants, but private landowners subject to ESA restrictions claim that the Act unfairly and illogically restricts the use of their valuable property. As the agency with primary responsibility for the ESA's administration, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is caught between both sides. This Article examines how the FWS uses habitat conservation plans (HCPs) to balance the demands of conservationists and property owners. The Article begins by discussing …

Estuarine Artificial Reefs To Enhance Seagrass Planting And Provide Fish Habitat, Ryan J. Heise, Stephen A. Bortone
Estuarine Artificial Reefs To Enhance Seagrass Planting And Provide Fish Habitat, Ryan J. Heise, Stephen A. Bortone
Gulf of Mexico Science
Small 25-m2 artificial reef sets were deployed 1 m deep in Choctawhatchee Bay, FL, to determine the ability of reefs to aid in the establishment of newly planted Ruppia maritima (widgeon grass) while providing habitat for estuarine fishes. Seagrass survival and coverage were examined for reef configurations and compared with control plots. Visual surveys conducted from June 1996 to May 1997 indicated that the artificial reefs had no effect on the survivorship or growth of the planted R. maritima. The artificial reefs attracted juvenile and young adult fishes and had significantly more species, higher diversity, more individuals, and …
