Influence Of Summer Biogeography On Wood Warbler Stopover Abundance, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Rob Smith, Deborah M. Finch, Frank R. Moore, Wang Yong Jan 1999

Influence Of Summer Biogeography On Wood Warbler Stopover Abundance, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Rob Smith, Deborah M. Finch, Frank R. Moore, Wang Yong

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We evaluated the effect of summer biogeography of migrant wood warblers (Parulidae) on their stopover abundance. To characterize abundance patterns, we used mistnet capture data from spring and fall migration in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, spring migration on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, and fall migration on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. To describe the summer biogeography of 47 species of wood warblers, we used indices of their summer range size, their summer density, and distance between their summer ranges and our netting sites. Multiple linear regressions indicated that biogeographic indices explained 55% and 49% of variation …

Mensural Discrimination Between Reithrodontomys Megalotis And R. Montanus Using Cranial Characters, Steven R. Hoofer, Jerry R. Choate, Nicholas E. Mandrak Jan 1999

Mensural Discrimination Between Reithrodontomys Megalotis And R. Montanus Using Cranial Characters, Steven R. Hoofer, Jerry R. Choate, Nicholas E. Mandrak

Sternberg Museum of Natural History Faculty Publications

We assessed the utility of cranial measurements to discriminate between the western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis) and plains harvest mouse (R. montanus). We tested four combinations of measurements using discriminant function analysis to determine if several measurements could be used together to identify individuals of the two species regardless of age. Individual cranial measurements could not be used to correctly identify all individuals of the two species when relative age was disregarded. When age was considered, adults and old adults, but not subadults, could be identified correctly based on univariate statistical data from cranial characters. All specimens of the two …

Models Of Mental Illness, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Although the concept of mental illness is central to the field of mental health and the practice of counseling, there is continuing disagreement about its definition. Several views are widely held. Each has important implications for understanding mental illness, determining which conditions are disorders and who has them, and choosing appropriate approaches to treatment. This controversy involves several important issues."

Patient Outcomes For Anterior Multi-Level Cervical Fusions: A Comparative Analysis Of Ao And Doc Instrumentation, Joseph E.D. Peterson

Capstone Research Projects

The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of the DePuy-Acromed DOC implant with the Synthes AO plate by means of analysis of subjective and objective data.

A retrospective review of 56 consecutive instrumented, anterior multi-level cervical fusions by two orthopedic spine specialists was completed. Biographical, clinical, surgical and radiographic data was collected for patients who underwent anterior multi-level cervical fusions between 12/13/96 and 4/8/99. Twenty-five of the patients received a DOC implant and 31 received the AO plate.

No major complications occurred during or following surgery directly related to either implant. Both groups however, did contain cases …

Defining Pcr Reaction Conditions For The Amplification Of A 3000-4000 Ntp Sequence Of Drosophila Melanogaster Mtdna, Timothy Arakawa Jan 1999

Defining Pcr Reaction Conditions For The Amplification Of A 3000-4000 Ntp Sequence Of Drosophila Melanogaster Mtdna, Timothy Arakawa

Capstone Research Projects

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is extremely vulnerable to large deletions. These mutations seem to contribute to the physiological effects of aging as the mtDNA is increasingly exposed to free radicals generated by degenerate respiratory enzymes. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis are used to optimize reaction conditions necessary to amplify a 3000-4000 nucleotide pair (ntp) segment of Drosophila melanogaster mtDNA. Ten primers are designed to amplify different portions of the mitochondrial genome. The reaction conditions necessary to successfully amplify a 216 ntp DNA sequence are confirmed, and the ten primers are examined for PCR amplification compatibility.

Induction Of Protease Activity In Vibrio Anguillarum By Gastrointestinal Mucus, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson Jan 1999

Induction Of Protease Activity In Vibrio Anguillarum By Gastrointestinal Mucus, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The effect of gastrointestinal mucus on protease activity in Vibrio anguillarum was investigated. Protease activity was measured by using an azocasein hydrolysis assay. Cells grown to stationary phase in mucus (200 mg of mucus protein/ml) exhibited ninefold-greater protease activity than cells grown in Luria-Bertani broth plus 2% NaCl (LB20). Protease induction was examined with cells grown in LB20 and resuspended in mucus, LB20, nine-salts solution (NSS [a carbon-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-free salt solution]), or marine minimal medium (3M) (~109 CFU/ml). Induction of protease activity occurred 60 to 90 min after addition of mucus and was ≥ 70-fold greater than …

Dispersal Of Synanthropic Diptera: Lessons From The Past And Technology For The Future, Carl J. Jones, Scott A. Isard, M. Roberto Cortinas

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The impact of aerial invasion of new habitats by dispersal of synanthropic arthropods on human society is one of the most important topics in the entomological world. A review is presented of important advances in the knowledge of dispersal of a number of dipteran species that cause damage to, or serve as vectors for diseases of, humans and associated animals. The components of aerial dispersal are delineated, and forms of dispersal are defined in the context of interactive forces that result in dispersal by synanthropic Diptera. Migratory flights by black flies are put into ecological perspective, as are the wind-borne …

Secret Pain : Understanding And Treating Self-Injurious Behaviors In Women, Eva Schoen Jan 1999

Secret Pain : Understanding And Treating Self-Injurious Behaviors In Women, Eva Schoen

Graduate Research Papers

This paper is an attempt to raise awareness of the presence of self-injury in Western societies. Causes, symptoms, related diagnoses, and treatment of self-injurious behaviors will be discussed. Most importantly, however, this paper is meant to challenge and, ultimately, decrease the stigma surrounding SD and increase empathy and compassion for the self-injuring person.

Due to constraints of this research paper, the author focuses on female self-injurers and excludes information on self-injury in mentally retarded individuals and prisoners.

2,5-, 3,5-, 3,7-, 4,5-, 5,6-, und 6,7-Dichloro-8-quinolinols were prepared and tested along with their 3,6- and 5,7-ana1ogues against six fungi (Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, Myrothecium verrucaria, Trichoderma viride, Mucor cirinelloides, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes) in Sabouraud dextrose broth. Most of the compounds were strongly antifungal, inhibiting five of the fungi below 1 μg/ml. This activity is attributed to intramolecular synergism. M. cirinelloides was inhibited less by these compounds

Oligopsony With Fixed Market Supply, Leslie J. Reinhorn, Quinn Weninger Jan 1999

Oligopsony With Fixed Market Supply, Leslie J. Reinhorn, Quinn Weninger

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper analyzes oligopsonistic price competition under a fixed input supply constraint. Firms simultaneously and noncooperatively choose input prices. A "highest offer first" allocation rule determines each firm's share of the fixed supply. Under this rule, if a firm offers a particularly low price, then it may be shut out of the market. Moreover, low offer prices cannot be sustained in the market as a whole since firms have an incentive to outbid their rival(s) and increase individual market share. A pure strategy Nash equilibrium exists if the number of competing firms is sufficiently large. When this condition is satisfied, …
