Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Microscopy, Stefanie Vangorden Jan 1999

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Microscopy, Stefanie Vangorden

Theses

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) microscopy is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on a small scale. The purpose of this study was to develop an NMR microscope capable of producing tomographic images of 5 mm objects. The microscope was developed around an existing Bruker 300 MHz NMR spectrometer with a three orthogonal axis gradient coil set. Computer code for generating tomographic images was written and images were obtained of various standard test objects, referred to as phantoms. Phantoms were created to mathematically evaluate and document features such as in-plane resolution, and slice thickness. An in-plane resolution of 118 μm and a slice …

Hormone-Dependent Interaction Between The Amino- And Carboxyl-Terminal Domains Of Progesterone Receptor In Vitro And In Vivo, Marc J. Tetel, Paloma H. Giangrande, Susan A. Leonhardt, Donald P. Mcdonnell, Dean P. Edwards Jan 1999

Hormone-Dependent Interaction Between The Amino- And Carboxyl-Terminal Domains Of Progesterone Receptor In Vitro And In Vivo, Marc J. Tetel, Paloma H. Giangrande, Susan A. Leonhardt, Donald P. Mcdonnell, Dean P. Edwards

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Full transcriptional activation by steroid hormone receptors requires functional synergy between two transcriptional activation domains (AF) located in the amino (AF-1) and carboxyl (AF-2) terminal regions. One possible mechanism for achieving this functional synergy is a physical intramolecular association between amino (N-) and carboxyl (C-) domains of the receptor. Human progesterone receptor (PR) is expressed in two forms that have distinct functional activities: full-length PR-B and the amino-terminally truncated PR-A. PR-B is generally a stronger activator than PR-A, whereas under certain conditions PR-A can act as a repressor in trans of other steroid receptors. We have analyzed whether separately expressed …

Like the CCR5 chemokine receptors of humans and rhesus macaques, the very homologous (∼98–99% identical) CCR5 of African green monkeys (AGMs) avidly binds β-chemokines and functions as a coreceptor for simian immunodeficiency viruses. However, AGM CCR5 is a weak coreceptor for tested macrophage-tropic (R5) isolates of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Correspondingly, gp120 envelope glycoproteins derived from R5 isolates of HIV-1 bind poorly to AGM CCR5. We focused on a unique extracellular amino acid substitution at the juncture of transmembrane helix 4 (TM4) and extracellular loop 2 (ECL2) (Arg for Gly at amino acid 163 (G163R)) as the likely …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Management Situation Summary, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, April 1999, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1999

Preliminary Analysis Of The Management Situation Summary, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, April 1999, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 (NFMA P.L. 94-588) required each National Forest to develop National Forest Land and Resource Management Plans (Forest Plans), and to update or "revise" them when conditions have significantly changed or at least every 15 years. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest completed its current Forest Plan in 1985 (USDA Forest Service 1985). To comply with NFMA a revision needs to be completed by the end of 2000. In 1997, Congress prohibited expenditure of funds on formal Forest Plan revision. In 1998 prohibitions were lifted for 14 national forests nationwide. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest was …
