Intsormil 1999 Annual Report, John M. Yohe, Thomas Crawford Jr., Joan Frederick, Dorothy Stoner

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Presently, worldwide, more than 800 million people do not get enough to eat or have access to a balanced diet to be healthy. At the World Food Summit in 1996, the United States of America (USA) and 185 other countries pledged to reduce the number of malnourished people by one half by 2015. It is shocking that about 33% of preschool children in developing countries will be stunted due to malnutrition by the year 2000. The number of stunted children in Africa alone has increased significantly from 35 million in 1980 to 45 million in 1995 and is predicted to …

Abundance Of Spiders And Insect Predators On Grapes In Central California, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane Jan 1999

Abundance Of Spiders And Insect Predators On Grapes In Central California, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane

Horticulture and Crop Science

We compared the abundance of spiders and predaceous insects in five central California vineyards. Spiders constituted 98.1% of all predators collected. More than 90% of all spiders collected were from eight species of spiders, representing six families. Two theridiids (Theridion dilutum and T. melanurum) were the most abundant, followed by a miturgid (Cheiracanthium inclusum) and an agelinid (Hololena nedra). Predaceous insects comprised 1.6% of all predators collected, and were represented by six genera in five families. Nabis americoferis (Heteroptera, Nabidae) was the most common predaceous insect, with its densities highest late in the growing …

Eccentricity Of The Apical System And Peristome Of Sand Dollars (Echinodermata: Echinoidea: Clypeasteroida: Scutellina), John M. Lawrence, Christopher M. Pomory Jan 1999

Eccentricity Of The Apical System And Peristome Of Sand Dollars (Echinodermata: Echinoidea: Clypeasteroida: Scutellina), John M. Lawrence, Christopher M. Pomory

Gulf of Mexico Science

Eccentricity, location of structures away from a central position, is associated with directional movement. Although sand dollars have directional movement, only eccentricity of the anus is apparent. Eccentricity of the apical system and peristome is less apparent. We have found the apical system and the peristome are statistically significantly slightly anterior in Mellita tenuis, Mellita quinquiesperforata, Mellita isometra, and Encope aberrans. The apical system of Leodia sexiesperforata is central and that of Echinarachnius parma is anterior, whereas the peristome of both is statistically significantly slightly posterior. The usual selective pressure for pronounced anterior location of the …

Onshore Transport Of Elopomorph Leptocephali And Glass Eels (Pisces: Osteichthyes) In The Florida Keys, Christopher W. Harnden, Roy E. Crabtree, Jonathan M. Shenker Jan 1999

Onshore Transport Of Elopomorph Leptocephali And Glass Eels (Pisces: Osteichthyes) In The Florida Keys, Christopher W. Harnden, Roy E. Crabtree, Jonathan M. Shenker

Gulf of Mexico Science

The influx of elopomorph leptocephali and glass eels to Florida Bay was monitored on 160 nights from January through December 1993. Metamorphic leptocephali and glass eels were both captured in channel nets moored in Channel Five near Long Key, FL. Eighty-eight percent of the 2,811 leptocephali collected were speckled worm eels (Myrophis punctatus, n = 2,486). The remaining 12% of leptocephali consisted of nine species, including key worm eels (Ahlia egmontis, n = 153), shrimp eels (Ophichthus gomesi, n = 69), and moray eels (Gymnothorax spp., n = 33). The glass eels collected …

Food Resource Utilization In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus In Contrasting Shallow-Water Microhabits Of Saint Joseph Bay, Florida, Stephen D. Beddingfield, James B. Mcclintock Jan 1999

Food Resource Utilization In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus In Contrasting Shallow-Water Microhabits Of Saint Joseph Bay, Florida, Stephen D. Beddingfield, James B. Mcclintock

Gulf of Mexico Science

The feeding activity and relative percentages of different foods consumed by the regular sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus in three contrasting microhabitats were examined over a 2-yr period in Saint Joseph Bay, FL, at its northern limits of distribution. In 1993, feeding activity levels of individuals at a site dominated by the seagrass Thalassia testudinum were higher on average than at a site characterized mostly by sand substrates alone or a site dominated by the seagrass Syringodium filiforme. No other significant difference in feeding activity levels was detected between sites or years. Feeding activity was markedly reduced at all sites …

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Population Structure Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In Coastal Waters Of The Southeastern United States, John R. Gold, Linda R. Richardson, Carol Furman Jan 1999

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Population Structure Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In Coastal Waters Of The Southeastern United States, John R. Gold, Linda R. Richardson, Carol Furman

Gulf of Mexico Science

Restriction-site variation in mitochondrial (mt)DNA was examined among 470 spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) sampled from eight localities in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) and two localities along the southeastern (Atlantic) coast of the United States. mtDNA fragment patterns generated 81 distinct mtDNA haplotypes (genotypes), three of which were found in 64% of the individuals assayed. Nucleotide sequence divergence among mtDNA haplotypes ranged from 0.148 to 1.808% and averaged (±SD) 0.676 ± 0.296%. Significant heterogeneity in mtDNA haplotype frequencies was detected between regions (i.e., Gulf vs Atlantic) and among sample localities from the northern Gulf. The latter appears …

Biological Feasibility Of Freshwater Mussel And Pearl Culture In Gulf Coast States, Richard J. Neves Jan 1999

Biological Feasibility Of Freshwater Mussel And Pearl Culture In Gulf Coast States, Richard J. Neves

Gulf of Mexico Science

Production of freshwater pearls from mussels has been shown to be a viable enterprise in Tennessee, and the freshwater environments and mussel species in Gulf Coast states provide ample resources for this fledgling industry to expand. Mussel species such as the washboard (Megalonaias nervosa), threeridge (Amblema plicata), and others in rivers and reservoirs are capable of producing quality pearls once the implantation technique for pearl formation becomes more widely known. Methods for the propagation of freshwater mussels with recirculating aquaculture systems have been developed recently to allow culture of rare or commercial species. Wild-caught mussels could …

Use Of Discriminant And Fourth-Derivative Analyses With High-Resolution Absorption Spectra For Phytoplankton Research: Limitations At Varied Signal-To-Noise Ratio And Spectral Resolution, D.L. Roelke, C.D. Kennedy, A.D. Weidemann Jan 1999

Weidemann

Gulf of Mexico Science

Future management efforts aimed at inhibiting harmful algal blooms will require extensive temporal and spatial monitoring of phytoplankton community composition. A cost-effective approach to delineating phytoplankton community composition may be through analysis of absorption spectra, measured in situ with instruments deployed on moorings or by remote sensing. Classification techniques relying on absorption spectra include discriminant and fourth-derivative analysis. We investigated how well these techniques performed theoretically at varied signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution representative of a new absorption and attenuation instrument called HiStar. Our findings suggest that discriminant analysis of absorption spectra is a highly useful technique for categorizing green …

The Population Dynamics Of The Brittlestar Ophioderma Brevispinum In Near- And Farshore Seagrass Habitats Of Port Saint Joseph Bay, Florida, Clare L. Leonard, James B. Mcclintock Jan 1999

The Population Dynamics Of The Brittlestar Ophioderma Brevispinum In Near- And Farshore Seagrass Habitats Of Port Saint Joseph Bay, Florida, Clare L. Leonard, James B. Mcclintock

Gulf of Mexico Science

The population dynamics of the brittlestar Ophioderma brevispinum were followed monthly from Jan. 1995 to March 1996 in a near- and farshore seagrass bed in Saint Joseph Bay, FL. Abiotic (sea water temperature and salinity) and biotic (seagrass cover and sublethal predation) factors that could influence populations were also measured. Densities of individuals at both sites peaked in winter and spring, then declined dramatically in early summer months, and increased once again in the early fall at the offshore site and in the late fall at the nearshore site. Mean monthly disc diameters of individuals did not reveal any evidence …

New Opportunities For Economic Benefits For The American Southeast In The International Pearl Industry, Maria C. Haws, Leonard Dimichele Jan 1999

New Opportunities For Economic Benefits For The American Southeast In The International Pearl Industry, Maria C. Haws, Leonard Dimichele

Gulf of Mexico Science

Economic participation of the United States in the global pearl industry has been minimal in terms of economic benefits received, although critical in terms of support to the industry. The United States is the primary provider of freshwater mussel shell nucleus and a major consumer of pearls, but economic benefits accrue mainly to foreign companies whereas environmental and economic externalities affect the economy and environment of the southeastern states. The economic role of the U.S. mussel shell industry and aquaculture sector can be enhanced if the mussel shell fishery is stabilized and if options to extract higher returns for the …
