Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Integrins are widely expressed plasma membrane adhesion molecules that tether cells to matrix proteins and to one another in cell-cell interactions. Integrins also transmit outside-in signals that regulate functional responses of cells, and are known to influence gene expression by regulating transcription. In previous studies we found that platelets, which are naturally occurring anucleate cytoplasts, translate preformed mRNA transcripts when they are activated by outside-in signals. Using strategies that interrupt engagement of integrin alphaIIbbeta3 by fibrinogen and platelets deficient in this integrin, we found that alphaIIbbeta3 regulates the synthesis of B cell lymphoma 3 (Bcl-3) when platelet aggregation is induced …

Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Mercapto-Methylimidazole-Induced Gastric Acid Secretion And Stress-Induced Gastric Ulceration, Uday Bandyopadhyay, Dipak Das, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Mrinalini Bhattacharjee, Ranajit K. Banerjee

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The objective of the present study is to delineate the role of reactive oxygen species in drug-induced gastric hyperacidity and stress-induced gastric ulceration. We reported earlier that mercaptomethylimidazole (MMI), an antithyroid drug, induces gastric acid (HCl) secretion partially through H2receptor activation of the parietal cell by histamine release and partially through an intracellular mechanism. While studying the latter, MMI-induced acid secretion was found to correlate well with the inactivation of the peroxidase, an important H2O2metabolizing enzyme of the mucosa. MMI activates the isolated parietal cell for acid secretion, which is sensitive to omeprazole. Peroxidase and catalase activity of the isolated …

Factors In Pediatrician Medication Administration, Kathleen Elaine Campbell Jan 1999

Factors In Pediatrician Medication Administration, Kathleen Elaine Campbell

Masters Theses

King’s conceptual framework was used to examine the relationship between nurses’ stated beliefs of goals of pain management, their personal experience of pain, and their educational levels when choosing to intervene in the management of pain for pediatric patients. A descriptive correlational design was used with a convenience sample of 51 registered nurses in a West Michigan children’s hospital.

No significance was found between the goal of pain management and the level of stated intentions to intervene, the education level of the nurse and stated intentions to intervene, and nurses who have had a personal pain experience and their stated …

Osteological Analysis Of The Killifish Genus Cynolebias (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), Marcelo Loureiro, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

Relationships among the species of the annual fish Cynolebias are unclear. An analysis of the variation and utility of osteological characters for phylogenetic analysis was done using cleared and double-stained specimens representing 21 species of Cynolebias. This analysis showed that some of the characters previously used to diagnose this genus and some of the species are polymorphic. Osteologically, Cynolebias can be diagnosed by the following synapomorphies: (1) triangular-shaped parietal, (2) vomer positioned ventral to the parasphenoid, (3) long ventral process of the dentary, (4) teeth on fourth ceratobranchial, and (5) teeth on first epibranchial. In addition, characters that help …

Method For The Broad Spectrum Prevention And Removal Of Microbial Contamination Of Poultry And Meat Products By Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, Cesar M. Compadre, Philip J. Breen, Hamid Salari, E. Kim Fifer, Danny L. Lattin, Michael F. Slavik, Yanbin Li

Patents Granted

A composition and a method of using the composition for removal and prevention of broad spectrum foodborne microbial contamination in meat products is described. The method uses quaternary ammonium compounds for inhibiting attachment of and removing a broad spectrum of foodborne microbial contamination from poultry and meat products. For example, removing Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination from meat and poultry products. One of the treatment methods is spraying quaternary ammonium compounds on the poultry and meat products to prevent broad spectrum foodborne microbial contamination. The treatment methods can contact the meat products with the quaternary ammonium compounds for less than 10 …

Measuring Fractional Cover And Leaf Area Index In Arid Ecosystems: Digital Camera, Radiation Transmittance, And Laser Altimetry Methods, Michael A. White, Gregory P. Asner, Ramakrishna R. Nemani, Jeff L. Privette, Steven W. Running Jan 1999

Measuring Fractional Cover And Leaf Area Index In Arid Ecosystems: Digital Camera, Radiation Transmittance, And Laser Altimetry Methods, Michael A. White, Gregory P. Asner, Ramakrishna R. Nemani, Jeff L. Privette, Steven W. Running

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Field measurement of shrubland ecological properties is important for both site monitoring and validation of remote sensing information. During the May 1997 NASA Earth Observing System Jornada Prototype Validation Exercise, we calculated plot-level plant area index, leaf area index, total fractional cover, and green fractional cover with data from four instruments: (1) a Dycam Agricultural Digital Camera (ADC), (2) a LI-COR LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer, (3) a Decagon sunfleck Ceptometer, and (4) a laser altimeter. Estimates from the LAI-2000 and Ceptometer were very similar (plant area index 0.3, leaf area index 0.22, total fractional cover 0.19, green fractional cover 0.14), …

Integration Of Hydroxyapatite Concentration Of Bacteria And Seminested Pcr To Enhance Detection Of Salmonella Typhimurium From Ground Beef And Bovine Carcass Sponge Samples, Elaine D. Berry, Gregory R. Siragusa Jan 1999

Integration Of Hydroxyapatite Concentration Of Bacteria And Seminested Pcr To Enhance Detection Of Salmonella Typhimurium From Ground Beef And Bovine Carcass Sponge Samples, Elaine D. Berry, Gregory R. Siragusa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Hydroxyapatite (HA) concentration of bacteriafiom ground beef and bovine carcass sponge samples was examined as a method to enhance the PCR detection of Salmonella typhimurium in these samples. Ground beef and carcass sponge samples were inoculated with progressively lower levels of S. typhimurium. Concentrated (10% HA) and unconcentrated samples were prepared for PCR after 0, 2, 3, or 4 h of nonselective enrichment. Without HA concentration and enrichment, Salmonella in ground beef was not detected by seminested PCR, even when present at levels of 103 cells/mL in the 1:10 ground beef homogenates. However, when bacteria in these samples were …

Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to test rigorously the measurement equivalence of the Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Scales (Gudykunst et al., 1994) across three cultural groups and for males and females, and (b) to determine the comparative amount of varianc,e in self-perceived leadership communication style that can be predicted by self-construal orientation, culture, and biological sex. College students from the United States (n = 224), New Zealand (n = 218), and the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan (n = 228) responded to the self-construal scales and the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (Hemphill & Coons, 1957).
