The Future U.S. Military Presence In Asia: Landpower And The Geostrategy Of American Commitment, Larry M. Wortzel Dr., Robert H. Scales Major General Apr 1999

The Future U.S. Military Presence In Asia: Landpower And The Geostrategy Of American Commitment, Larry M. Wortzel Dr., Robert H. Scales Major General

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The United States strategic framework in the Pacific has three parts: peacetime engagement, as described above, which includes a forward presence; crisis response, which builds on forward-stationed forces, the "boots-on-the ground" and, if necessary, fighting and winning any conflict that might develop. The mechanisms to carry out this strategic framework are embedded in the regular contacts and engagement activities that the United States carries out with friends and allies in the region. What the future will look like in Asia will be determined largely on what happens on the Korean Peninsula. It could be changed by such eventualities as a …

Microbiology Of The Oil Fly, Helaeomyia Petrolei, Dana R. Kadavy, Bradley A. Plantz, Christopher A. Shaw, Jill Myatt, Tyler A. Kokjohn, Kenneth Nickerson Apr 1999

Microbiology Of The Oil Fly, Helaeomyia Petrolei, Dana R. Kadavy, Bradley A. Plantz, Christopher A. Shaw, Jill Myatt, Tyler A. Kokjohn, Kenneth Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

Helaeomyia petrolei larvae isolated from the asphalt seeps of Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, Calif., were examined for microbial gut contents. Standard counts on Luria-Bertani, MacConkey, and blood agar plates indicated ca. 2 x 105 heterotrophic bacteria per larva. The culturable bacteria represented 15 to 20% of the total population as determined by acridine orange staining. The gut itself contained large amounts of the oil, had no observable ceca, and maintained a slightly acidic pH of 6.3 to 6.5. Despite the ingestion of large amounts of potentially toxic asphalt by the larvae, their guts sustained the growth of …

Hydrogen Bonding And Cooperative Effects In Mixed Dimers And Trimers Of Methanol And Trifluoromethanol: An Ab Initio Study, Ruben D. Parra, Xiao Cheng Zeng Apr 1999

Hydrogen Bonding And Cooperative Effects In Mixed Dimers And Trimers Of Methanol And Trifluoromethanol: An Ab Initio Study, Ruben D. Parra, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Ab initio calculations are used to provide information on the mixed dimers and cyclic trimers of the methanol-trifluoromethanol system. In order to better understand the systems, the monomers and their corresponding dimers and trimers are also investigated. Molecular structures and harmonic frequencies are obtained at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Interaction energies are calculated with the MP2 and B3LYP methods using the 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2d,2p), and 6-311++G(3d,2p) basis sets for the dimers and heterodimers. The 6-311++G(d,p) basis set was used to calculate the …

The Feasibility Of Controlling The Brown Treesnake In Small Plots, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Earl W. Campbell Iii Apr 1999

The Feasibility Of Controlling The Brown Treesnake In Small Plots, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Earl W. Campbell Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

There is an urgent need to provide snake-free or snake-reduced habitats for the wildlife species on Guam that have declined or disappeared as a result of predation by the Brown Treesnake, Boiga irregularis (Savidge, 1987; Fritts, 1988; Rodda and Fritts, 1992; Rodda et al., this volume, Chap. 2). At present, we know of no practical techniques for reducing or eradicating the snake throughout Guam, a densely populated island of 54,100 ha. Conserving native wildlife and reducing the incidences of snakes boarding ship and aircraft may not require the elimination of snakes from the entire island, however. Elimination of snakes from …

An Overview Of The Biology Of The Brown Treesnake* (Boiga Irregularis), A Costly Introduced Pest On Pacific Islands, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Michael J. Mccoid, Earl W. Campbell Iii Apr 1999

An Overview Of The Biology Of The Brown Treesnake* (Boiga Irregularis), A Costly Introduced Pest On Pacific Islands, Gordon H. Rodda, Thomas H. Fritts, Michael J. Mccoid, Earl W. Campbell Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The 20-30 species of the genus Boiga (Colubridae, Boiginae) range from tropical Africa through southern Asia to Melanesia and Australia (Leviton, 1968). Collectively, they are known as catsnakes, mangrove snakes, or treesnakes (Obst et al., 1988; Greene, 1989). The common name "catsnakes" is sometimes used for snakes in the genus Telescopus as well (Obst et 1, 1988).

Members of the genus Boiga are nocturnal, oviparous, opisthoglyphic, euryphagic, and slender; they have vertical elliptical pupils (thus “cat” snakes) set in large eyes, and short, blunt heads that are noticeably larger than their necks. With one exception they are arboreal or semiarboreal …

Margolisianum Bulbosum N. Gen., N. Sp. (Nematoda: Philometridae) From The Southern Flounder, Paralichthys Lethostigma (Pisces: Bothidae), In Mississippi Sound, Usa, Reginald B. Blaylock, Robin M. Overstreet Apr 1999

Margolisianum Bulbosum N. Gen., N. Sp. (Nematoda: Philometridae) From The Southern Flounder, Paralichthys Lethostigma (Pisces: Bothidae), In Mississippi Sound, Usa, Reginald B. Blaylock, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new species of a philometrid nematode, Margolisianum bulbosum, is described from the subcutaneous tissue in the mouth (larvigerous females), head (males, ovigerous, and larvigerous females), and eye (preovigerous females) of the southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, from Mississippi Sound. It is placed in a new genus diagnosed by the combination of 8 large, paired but separate cephalic papillae; no inner cephalic papillae; an esophagus with a separate, muscular anterior bulb; a prominent mononuclear esophageal gland; and variable, irregularly distributed cuticular bosses in the females, as well as a vestigial rectum, particularly in larvigerous females. Some female specimens exhibit …

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens Apr 1999

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A collection of secondary (literature) information which revealed the relevant elements and conditions that surround the psychosocial aspects of family kinships were integrated to form the Kin-Psychosocial-Systems Model (KPSS). The KPSS Model is an investigative model (that includes a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions) which presents a systematic view of family kinships by specifying relationships among culture and family social systems, care-giving and socialization, and psychosocial development for the purpose of providing researchers with a means for explaining and predicting psychological and social phenomena related to the expression and enactment of family kinships.

Purification Of 10-5a9 Antigen In Alzheimer's Disease, Gary Isaacs Apr 1999

Purification Of 10-5a9 Antigen In Alzheimer's Disease, Gary Isaacs

Senior Honors Theses

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that results in memory loss and reduced cognitive function. Characteristic lesions include senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Evidence for a previously unknown component, cockroach 10-5A9 antigen, within these lesions has recently been discovered. It is the purpose of this study to purify to 10-5A9 antigen for further analysis. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the antigen's presence in AD lesions and the Lewy bodies of Parkinson's disease. Although SDS-PAGE/Western blotting and immunoprecipitation techniques proved ineffective, the former indicated antigen presence in the particulate matter of AD brain homogenates. Negative results from ammonium sulfate experiments …

A Comparative Study Of Women's Perceptions Of Vaginal And Cesarean Births, Karen Blamer Apr 1999

A Comparative Study Of Women's Perceptions Of Vaginal And Cesarean Births, Karen Blamer

Masters Theses

Perception of birth is an important consideration for all health care providers. A positive perception of birth can promote effective adaptation to the maternal role. The Roy Adaptation Model guided this research study comparing the perception of birth among women who delivered vaginally, by planned cesarean birth, and by unplanned cesarean birth.

Perception of birth was measured by the use of a 29 item questionnaire developed by Marut and Mercer and completed by 78 subjects two to four weeks postpartum. The ANOVA and post hoc Scheffe tests were used to measure the differences between groups.

The findings supported the hypothesis …

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors Apr 1999

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project in ministry titled, "Single Parent Ministry in the Local Church," is the result of the author's concern for the unique issues faced by today's ever increasing single parent households. This relatively new phenomenon is discussed in light of the historical roots of singleness in general. It is then shown that this "new phenomenon" is really not new at all. Single Parenting is virtually as old as creation itself, going back to the first single parent described in the Bible, Hagar. Much instruction regarding the circumstances of the single parent is discussed. The paper then examines the various, specific …

Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd Apr 1999

Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

Surface meshing algorithms require certain relationships among the number of intervals on the curves that bound the surface. Assigning the number of intervals to all of the curves in the model such that all relationships are satisfied is called interval assignment. Volume meshing algorithms also require certain relationships among the numbers of intervals on each of the curves on the volume. These relationships are not always captured by surface meshing requirements. This thesis presents a news technique for automatically identifying volume constraints. In this technique, volume constraints are grouped with surface constraints and are solved simultaneously. A sweepable volume has …

A Prevention Model Of Juvenile Justice: The Promise Of Kansas V. Hendricks For Children, Christopher Slobogin, Mark R. Fondacaro, Jennifer L. Woolard Apr 1999

A Prevention Model Of Juvenile Justice: The Promise Of Kansas V. Hendricks For Children, Christopher Slobogin, Mark R. Fondacaro, Jennifer L. Woolard

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The traditional juvenile court, focused on rehabilitation and "childsaving," was premised primarily on a parens patriae notion of State power. " Because of juveniles' immaturity and greater treatability, this theory posited, the State could forego the substantive and procedural requirements associated with the adult system of criminal punishment. As an historical and conceptual matter, however, the parens patriae power justifies intervention only for the good of the subject, not for society as a whole. " From the outset, then, the image of the juvenile delinquency system as a manifestation of the State acting as "parent" was an implausible one. This …
