Trade Liberalization And Environmental Quality: Opposing Viewpoints, Additional Issues, And The Necessity Of Intervention, John R. Ubben Apr 1999

Trade Liberalization And Environmental Quality: Opposing Viewpoints, Additional Issues, And The Necessity Of Intervention, John R. Ubben

Major Themes in Economics

International trade, while promoting economic growth and development, is one of many suspects contributing to excessive rates of environmental degradation. Free trade compromises environmental quality in favor of welfare improvements and economic prosperity. The difficulty of measuring environmental amenities, trade theory’s inability to address externalities and decisions overtime, and numerous market failures regarding socially optimal prices, serve as red flags requiring intervention. The most successful form of intervention is domestic policies that internalize externalities. Intervention is also necessary to balance the interests of environmentalists and free traders and to ensure that the gains from trade are devoted to environmental protection.

The Application Of Role Theory To The Sexual Harassment Paradigm: A Policy Capturing Approach, Lora L. Jacobi

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This research utilized policy capturing techniques to analyze the different factors individuals use when determining sexual harassment. The importance of level of power, verbal behavior, and invasiveness of touch were examined. Additionally, role theory was applied to the sexual harassment paradigm in order to understand how context factors within an organization affect the perception of sexual harassment. Profile analysis was used to determine how the perception of what constitutes harassing behavior is mitigated by one's role in the organization.

Participants were one hundred and five males and one hundred and fifteen females who were either currently employed or employed within …

Production Of Copper-Complexing Ligands In Response To Elevated Concentrations Of Copper In Marine Synechococcus Spp., Arunsri Chatkaeomorakot Brown

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Synechococcus spp. (marine cyanobacteria) are extremely sensitive to copper toxicity and can produce high-affinity ligands of unknown structure which form complexes with free cupric ion. These ligands may contribute to the biological control of the levels of free cupric ions in surface seawater. Synechococcus spp. are known to produce metallothioneins (MT) in response to cadmium and zinc stress. In the present study the hypothesis that marine Synechococcus produce MT in response to copper was tested. Three marine Synechococcus spp. i.e., PCC 7001, PCC 73109, and PCC 7003, were exposed to different concentrations of CUSO 4 for various time periods. Size …

English Theses & Dissertations

No one can retrieve the time past, but in writing my memoir I have relived my years gone by, tracing back my journey and meeting the people who have traveled with me.

In my memoir I see myself a 14-year-old girl witnessing Father condemned as an anti-Communist Party Rightist. A year later when half a billion peasants are organized into the people's commune during the Great Leap Forward Campaign, I follow the crowds to pick up scrap metals to help with our steel production. Shortly after I see commune members happily eat their free meals, food shortage strike the whole …

The Liberal Future Of Relational Feminism: Robin West's Caring For Justice, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

Robin West is one of the most prolific1 and creative members of the legal academy. Her distinctive voice, as expressed in several books and numerous scholarly articles, informs and shapes debates within such diverse areas as constitutional theory (West 1990b; West 1994), feminist jurisprudence (West 1987; West 1988), and law and literature (West 1993). Indeed, some of her early articles concerning feminist jurisprudence (West 1987, West 1988) are now "classics" in a relatively new field of inquiry and appear in virtually every anthology or textbook in the field (Bartlett and Kennedy 1991, 201; Becker, Bowman, and Torrey 1994, 90; Fineman …

Platelet Glycoprotein Iib/Iiia Inhibitors In Acute Coronary Syndrome, Chu-Pak Lau, Wai-Hong Chen

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

The first large-scale trial is the Prevention of Ischaemic Complication (EPIC) study, which compares the use of abciximab (borus followed by 12-hour infusion) in 2100 high-risk patients undergoing PTCA1. Compared to placebo, abciximab resulted in a 35% reduction in 30-day primary end-points of death, acute MI or urgent reintervention. An increase of bleeding complications has been found in this study using concomitant standard dosage of heparin, but the risk could be reduced by appropriate heparin dosage adjustment. The benefit of abciximab appeared to last up to 3 years, with a 13% long-term reduction in these composite endpoints.

Individual Differences In Attributional Style: The Mediating Influence Of Self-Efficacy, Self-Esteem, And Sex Role Identity, Angela J. Hirschy Apr 1999

Individual Differences In Attributional Style: The Mediating Influence Of Self-Efficacy, Self-Esteem, And Sex Role Identity, Angela J. Hirschy

Dissertations

Previous research into achievement attributions failed to demonstrate consistent main effects for sex or interaction effects between sex and situational or task variables. The ambiguity of these findings suggests that intervening variables other than sex may be influencing differences in attributions. Based on evidence derived from the theoretical and research literature related to psychological well-being and the reformulated learned helplessness model of depression, self-efficacy, selfesteem, and sex role identity have the potential to influence attributions made in different types of success and failure situations. The purpose of this study was to expand on achievement attribution research by investigating the relationship …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Our previous studies have shown that subthreshold concentrations of two platelet agonists exert synergistic effects on platelet aggregation. Here we studied the mechanism of synergistic interaction of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and epinephrine mediated platelet aggregation. We show that 5-HT had no or little effect on aggregation but it did potentiate the aggregation response of epinephrine. The synergistic interaction of 5-HT (1-5 microM) and epinephrine (0.5-2 microM) was inhibited by alpha2-adrenoceptor blocker (yohimbine; IC50= 0.4 microM), calcium channel blockers (verapamil and diltiazem with IC50 of 10 and 48 mM, respectively), PLC inhibitor (U73122; IC50=6 microM) and nitric oxide (NO) donor, SNAP (IC50=1.6 …

Effect Of Amino Acids On Inhibition Of Lactate Dehydrogenase-X By Gossypol, M H. Javed, M A. Khan Mar 1999

Effect Of Amino Acids On Inhibition Of Lactate Dehydrogenase-X By Gossypol, M H. Javed, M A. Khan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Gossypol acetic acid (GAA) has been shown to have male antifertility effects, but there are pronounced differences among animal species. In the search of endogenous effector molecules, which interfere with the functions of GAA, we have studied the in vitro effect of various amino acids on the inhibition of the purified LDH-X by GAA. Histidine, cysteine and glycine were shown to block the effect of GAA. The effects of these amino acids were concentration dependent. Histidine and glycine protection was found to be complex type in which both the Km and Vmax were decreased compared to control. Arginine, glutamic acid, …
