Golf Courses In Southern Nevada Will Significantly Impact The Water Management Efforts By Using Recycled Water Rather Than Potable Water To Irrigate Their Turf, Sean D. Ainsworth Apr 1999

Golf Courses In Southern Nevada Will Significantly Impact The Water Management Efforts By Using Recycled Water Rather Than Potable Water To Irrigate Their Turf, Sean D. Ainsworth

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

As the number of people continually move to the Las Vegas Valley and take up residence, the possibility of "running out of water" can become a reality. Having large water users (i.e. golf courses) irrigate their turf with recycled water, they will significantly impact the water management efforts in the Las Vegas Valley. When each course is irrigating their turf with recycled water, this will help ease the drinking water demand in the valley, especially during the peak demand season (summer).

The Relationship Between Selected Environmental Variables And Attrition, Persistence, And Academic Success Of Majority And Minority College Students, Carole J. Woolford-Hunt Apr 1999

The Relationship Between Selected Environmental Variables And Attrition, Persistence, And Academic Success Of Majority And Minority College Students, Carole J. Woolford-Hunt

Dissertations

Research indicates that college student persistence, attrition, and success is related to the student’s ability to gain academic and social integration into the university community. This theory has guided researchers to explore either the academic or social factors that promote integration. Under the umbrella of social integration exists the underresearched category of environmental factors.

The overall purpose of this study was to identify selected environmental factors that affect minority and majority students’ persistence and success rates in a Midwestern state-run university. The environmental variables of size of college within a larger university, residential versus nonresidential nature of colleges within a …

Baseline Susceptibility Of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Toxins, Paula C. R. G. Macron, Linda J. Young, Kevin L. Steffey, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Susceptibility to CrylAb and CrylAc toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis was determined for 11 populations of neonate European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hiibner), from the United States and 1 from northern Italy. Corn borer larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing B. thuringiensis concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 7 d. The range of variation in B. thuringiensis susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was very similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility to both proteins was observed, the magnitude of the differences was small (54-fold) and comparable to the variability observed among …

Virginia Journal of Science

Seventy one species of amphibians (55 salamanders, 16 anurans) and 46 species of reptiles (15 turtles, 8 lizards, 23 snakes) inhabit a five state area (Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia) in the southern Appalachian region bordered by the Potomac River, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the western margin of the Appalachian Plateau. Of these, 47.9 % of the amphibian fauna and 52.2 % of the reptilian fauna are listed as being of conservation concern by federal, state, and Natural Heritage programs in all or a portion of their ranges of this region. The Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon Shenandoah …

Characterization And Identification Of A Sludge-Associated Bacterial Isolate, Abiodun O. Adibi, Derrell Mcpherson, Minna Laine

Virginia Journal of Science

During a metal speciation study, an unusually high retention of lead ·was observed when lead solution was percolated through a column packed with sludge compost obtained from Hampton Roads Sanitation department. A bacterium was isolated from the sludge compost and identified as Bacillus sphaericus using electron microscopy, whole cell fatty acid analysis (Midi System) and Biolog GP Microplate. The isolate grows in broth and agar media containing up to 800 µM lead. Lead accumulation study using atomic absorption spectrophotometer indicates that the isolate adsorbs lead. Lead adsorption is pH dependent. The isolate contains a plasmid of approximately 40 -50 kbp …

The Relationship Between Principals' Leadership Characteristics And Characteristics Of Public Middle Schools, Linda S. Schneider-Rediske Apr 1999

The Relationship Between Principals' Leadership Characteristics And Characteristics Of Public Middle Schools, Linda S. Schneider-Rediske

Dissertations

Principals’ perceptions of the relationship between middle school leadership characteristics and the relevance and use of middle school characteristics were examined in this study. A systematic random sampling procedure was used to select principals from public middle schools in the State of Michigan. A survey instrument was developed to measure the variables. These variables were determined based on a review of the literature. The reliability of the instrument was obtained using the Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Spearman rank-ordered correlations were used to determine the strength and direction of the relationships of each hypothesis.

The findings from this study suggest that there …

Structural And Kinetic Studies Of A Cisplatin-Modified Dna Icosamer Binding To Hmg1 Domain B*, Elizabeth R. Jamieson, Matthew P. Jacobson, Carmen M. Barnes, Christine S. Chow, Stephen J. Lippard Apr 1999

Structural And Kinetic Studies Of A Cisplatin-Modified Dna Icosamer Binding To Hmg1 Domain B*, Elizabeth R. Jamieson, Matthew P. Jacobson, Carmen M. Barnes, Christine S. Chow, Stephen J. Lippard

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The high mobility group (HMG) domain is a DNA-binding motif found in the non-histone chromosomal proteins, HMG1 and HMG2, and some transcription factors. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that HMG-domain proteins can play a role in sensitizing cells to the anticancer drug cisplatin. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments were performed in the present study to investigate structural changes that accompany complex formation between the HMG domain B of HMG1 and a cisplatin-modified, 20-base pair double-stranded DNA probe containing fluorescein and rhodamine tethered at its two ends. The binding affinity of HMG1 domain B for the cisplatin-modified DNA probe was investigated …

Prenatal Genetic Testing And Its Impact On Incidence Of Abortion: A Comparative Analysis Of China And Ireland, Stacy Klein Apr 1999

Prenatal Genetic Testing And Its Impact On Incidence Of Abortion: A Comparative Analysis Of China And Ireland, Stacy Klein

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines how cultural, political, and religious ideologies influence the use and regulation of prenatal genetic testing in China and Ireland, highlighting their contrasting approaches. China's liberal policies, driven by population control and economic considerations, contrast sharply with Ireland's conservative stance, rooted in Catholic teachings. The analysis critiques both countries' approaches against the ethical guidelines set by the NIH Workshop, emphasizing the need for a balanced regulatory framework that respects individual autonomy and cultural values.

Real-Time Monitoring Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Adherence To Beef Carcass Surface Tissues With A Bioluminescent Reporter, Gregory R. Siragusa, Kevin Nawotka, Stanley D. Spilman, Pamela R. Contag, Christopher H. Contag Apr 1999

Real-Time Monitoring Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Adherence To Beef Carcass Surface Tissues With A Bioluminescent Reporter, Gregory R. Siragusa, Kevin Nawotka, Stanley D. Spilman, Pamela R. Contag, Christopher H. Contag

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A method for studying bacteria that are attached to carcass surfaces would eliminate the need for exogenous sampling and would facilitate understanding the interaction of potential human food-borne pathogens with food animal tissue surfaces. We describe such a method in which we used a bioluminescent reporter strain of Escherichia coli O157:H7 that was constructed by transformation with plasmid pCGLS1, an expression vector that contains a complete bacterial luciferase (lux) operon. Beef carcass surface tissues were inoculated with the bioluminescent strain, and adherent bacteria were visualized in real time by using a sensitive photon-counting camera to obtain in situ …

International Trade And Commerce: A Bridge For The Israelipalestinian Peace, Amir H. Khoury Apr 1999

International Trade And Commerce: A Bridge For The Israelipalestinian Peace, Amir H. Khoury

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the legal and economic framework governing trade between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), emphasizing the critical role of trade in advancing the peace process. While the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements (DOP) and the Economic Protocol established foundational principles for economic cooperation, ambiguities in these agreements and practical challenges, such as border closures, hinder effective trade relations. The article argues that addressing these issues is essential to fostering economic interdependence and mutual benefit, which are key to sustaining peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.
