Glyphosate (Roundup) is one of the most commonly used broad spectrum herbicides used with little to no toxicity to higher animals or the environment (Smith and Ochme, 1992). Due to its widespread use, there is a continuous contamination of the environment in both soil and water, with this herbicide. This study was developed to determine the effects of sublethal concentrations of glyphosate on development and survivability of Pseudosuccinea columella snails (intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica). This was assessed by acutely exposing third generation snails to varying concentrations (0.01-1ppm) of glyphosate. The snails were kept on artificial spring water to which …

The purpose of this study was to identify and determine the concentrations of targeted inorganic gases and total volatile organic compounds known to exist in indoor air spaces. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LADEQ) Office Building was selected because of a survey of occupants' symptoms and perceptions of indoor air quality. Collected air samples were analyzed for selected compounds by way of United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) sampling procedures and methods that utilized drager absorption tubes and a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. A New Shortbilled Marlin Of The Genus Makaira, From The Yorktown Formation, (Early Pliocene), Eastern North Carolina At Lee Creek Mine, Usa, Harry L. Fierstine

An unusually short rostrum from the Yorktown Formation, Early Pliocene, eastern North Carolina at Lee Creek Mine, USA, is described as a new species, Makaira purdyi. The rostrum is morphologically distinct from any Recent or fossil istiophorid in the following combination of characters: (1) fused portion of premaxillae is short and stout with denticlcs covering at least the distal one-half of its dorsal surface; (2) at one-fourth bill length, the cross-section is nearly round (depth/width = 0.95). The new marlin is distinguished from the extant shortbill spearfish, Tetrapturus angustirostris, and any istiophorid with a short rostrum caused by …

Study Of The Baig Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Michael David

Recently, intestinal bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria have been implicated in cholesterol gallstone disease. Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708, a bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria, contains multiple bile acid inducible (bai) genes which are located on a large bai operon. Genes of this operon encode the enzymes responsible for bile acid 7α-dehydroxylation. The baiG gene encodes a bile acid transporter in Eubacterium sp. strain V.P.I. 12708. Utilizing the polymerase chain reaction I determined the presence or absence of baiG-like genes in six bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating strains: Clostridium sp. Strain TN-271, Eubacterium sp. strain 1-10, Clostridium bifermentans strain 1-55, Clostridium sordellii strain Y67, …

Surfactant mediated extractions are analogous to liquid-liquid extractions (LLE) except surfactants are used as extractants instead of organic solvents. The benefit for using surfactants for extractions includes lower toxicity, lower associated costs and direct compatibility with high performance liquid chromatography techniques. In this study, a novel immobilized surfactant extraction method was developed. In this method, the cationic alklytrimethylamrnonium surfactants are immobilized onto a strong cationic exchange resin through ion exchange. This surfactant-resin material is placed in a column and aqueous solutions containing analytes are passed through. Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary

Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection

A 10-year riparian grazing study was conducted on a cold, mountain meadow riparian system in central Idaho in response to cattle grazing-salmonid fisheries conflicts. Six pastures were established along Stanley Creek to study the effects on riparian habitat of no grazing, light grazing (20-25% utilization), and medium grazing (35-50%) during late June. Stream channels narrowed, stream width-depth ratios were reduced, and channel bottom embeddedness decreased under all 3 grazing treatments as the area responded to changes from heavier historic grazing use. Streambank stability increased and streamside willow communities (Salix spp. L.) increased in both height and cover under all 3 …

Reductive Dehydroxy Coupling Of 2-(Hydroxymethyl)Indenes To Prepare Ethano-Bridged Bis(2-Indenyl) Ansa-Titanocenes, Hasan Palandoken, Justin K. Wyatt, Shawn R. Hitchcock, Marilyn M. Olmstead, Michael H. Nantz

Chemistry and Biochemistry

New examples of ansa-titanocenes derived from 1,2-bis(2-indenyl)ethane have been prepared. The titanium-mediated reductive coupling of 2-(hydroxymethyl)indenes provided a convenient method for substrate dimerization. Alkyl substitution of the indene ring at C(3) improved the regioselectivity of the reductive coupling to provide the ethylene bis(2-indenyl)ansa-ligands in 29–62% yield.

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre

This essay considers the way identity performances and theological claims of white Cuban theologians masks the long-historical racism that has haunted Cuban culture throughout its history. The author considers concerns among today’s Black Cubans that national reconciliation Miami-style may reimpose silence and secondarity upon them as citizens. They fear any attempt by exilic Cubans to radically change the present government in La Habana, lest it creates a one-way empowerment of White Cubans once again. True Cuban reconciliation must confront Cuban White supremacism. Otherwise national “reconciliation” would occur only among white Cubans on both sides of the Florida Straits, excluding Black …

Isolation, Cloning, And Identification Of Syringomycin E Action Genes Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Stephen D. Stock

Biology

Members of the syringomycin family of antifungal cyclic lipodepsipeptides are produced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae strains as secondary metabolites. These metabolites are potent antifungal agents effective against a broad range of fungi. The antifungal mechanism of action of these compounds has been investigated using syringomycin E and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model fungal system. Mutants resistant to the growth inhibitory effects of syringomycin E were isolated after mutagenesis with nitrosoguanidine. These mutants were screened for the production of ergosterol and by complementation with syr2 mutants to eliminate mutants belonging to known syringomycin E-resistant complementation groups. Estimating Total Body Fat In Sharp-Shinned And Cooper's Hawks: Techniques And Application, John P. Delong

I evaluated the use of three direct methods (fat scoring, condition indices, and multiple regression of external morphological variables) and one indirect method to estimate total body fat (TBF) in Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) and Cooper's Hawks (A. cooperii). All three direct methods explained a reasonable amount of variation in actual TBF values (r² ≥ 0.82), and all three methods required the use of four equations to account for the categories of species, age, and sex. Indirect methods are those that predict lean mass and subtract the lean mass estimate from the actual body …
