Cbfa2 (AML1) encodes the DNA-binding subunit of a transcription factor in the small family of core-binding factors (CBFs). Cbfa2 is required for the differentiation of all definitive hematopoietic cells, but not for primitive erythropoiesis. Here we show that Cbfa2 is expressed in definitive hematopoietic progenitor cells, and in endothelial cells in sites from which these hematopoietic cells are thought to emerge. Endothelial cells expressing Cbfa2 are in the yolk sac, the vitelline and umbilical arteries, and in the ventral aspect of the dorsal aorta in the aorta/genital ridge/mesonephros (AGM) region. VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The purpose of this study was to establish test-retest reliability coefficients for the Joseph Self-Concept Scale for Young Children (JSSYC). This study employed a one-week duration between administrations of the test instrument. There were thirty-four sixth-grade subjects used, ranging in age from eleven to thirteen. The JSSYC is an individually administered, interview type self-concept measure. The adolescent version of the JSSYC was used in this study, which is designed for use with children seven years of age and older. The Pearson product-moment correlation statistical procedure was used to calculate the correlation coefficients for this sample. The correlations for both the …

Despite volumes of studies and research on foster care as an intervention, there has been very limited research conducted on the effects foster care has on the family system as perceived by the foster parents. This study attempted to find some preliminary information about how the foster family is affected by foster children living in their home. Surveys were sent to 50 foster families in a rural county in Minnesota. The survey looked for correlations and frequencies in variables that had both positive and negative impact on the family system. As identified by the learning theorists, children learn from the …

The purpose of this study is to examine whether changes in attitudes would occur in students from Grade Five through Grade Eight in regard to addictive substances, such as alcohol and cigarettes. The study consisted of 85 students enrolled in a local Roman Catholic Grammar School. Students were given the Youth Attitude Survey, which was developed at Columbia University. The survey yielded results that were related to risk factors for future drug use. In a variety of areas, including whether marijuana should be legalized and if the student believed they would use drugs in the future, there was a pronounced …

The purpose of this study was to determine the most appropriate age for young hearing impaired children to receive a cochlear implant that would best facilitate oral language development. The study compared the oral language skills of five hearing impaired preschoolers, before and after implantation. Information was obtained through student case files including both formal and informal records and reports. Records included: progress reports, IEPs, audiological evaluations, and speech and language assessments.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of divorce on late adolescents' levels of conflictual independence during the separation-individuation process.

The sample consisted of 94 undergraduate students from Rowan University in southern New Jersey. This was a between subjects research design which involved a self-report inventory. Levels of conflictual independence were measured by the conflictual independence subscale (Cl) of Hoffman's Psychological Separation Inventory, a 138 question inventory which asks questions about one's relationships with the mother and father.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of functional analysis of challenging behaviors and behavioral intervention programs on children with multiple handicaps. It was hypothesized that there would be difference in the exhibition of challenging behaviors in children with multiple handicaps following administration of a functional analysis and a behavioral intervention plan. Ten challenging behaviors exhibited by seven children who are multi-handicapped were examined using the process of functional analysis (records review, Motivation Assessment Scale and Analog Setting/Environmental Manipulation) and behavioral intervention. The cycling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its significance to ecosystem metabolism was studled over a 16 mo period in a Thalassia testudjnum dominated meadow. The benthos was usually net autotrophic (annual gross primary production to respiration ratio [P:R] = 1.3) while water column respiration (R) exceeded gross primary production (annual P:R = 0.3). Net fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the benthos primarily occurred in the light (0 to 18 mmol C m^-2 d^-1) and from seagrass-dominated areas, suggesting that release of DOC was mainly due to seagrass exudation. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability of the Joseph Self-Concept Scale For Young Children, as an instrument for measuring self-concept. The sample consisted of thirty-four first and pre-first students from the Mary E. Roberts Elementary School, Moorestown, New Jersey. The timeframe for the testing was November 1998 through February 1999. Each student was individually tested utilizing the JSSYC.

The null hypothesis, stating there is no difference between the test and re-test scores, was rejected. The alternative hypothesis, stating that there is a difference between the test and re-test scores was accepted.

The dipolar hard sphere fluid (DHSF) is a useful model of a polar fluid. However, the DHSF lacks a vapor–liquid transition due to the formation of chain-like structures. Such chains are not characteristic of real polar fluids. A more realistic model of a polar fluid is obtained by adding a Lennard–Jones potential to the intermolecular potential. Very similar results are obtained by adding a Yukawa potential, instead of the Lennard–Jones potential. We call this fluid the dipolar Yukawa fluid (DYF). We show that an analytical solution of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) can be obtained for the DYF. Thus, the …

"From Margaret Walker to Terry McMillan: The Decline of Moral Values in Female Characters in Twentieth Century African-American Fiction" deals with how over the course of a century female characters have gone from strong moral beings to promiscuous immoral beings. It uses four novels written by prominent African-American women to present the decline of moral values. Margaret Walker, in her novel Jubilee, set in the civil war era, presents a strong moral being in Vyry Ware Brown. Toni Morrison's Nel Wright, in Sula, is slightly less moral than Walker's Vyry. This paper examines the perspectives of foster parents on their role in the lives of their foster children, with emphasis on the laws, Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980 that govern the foster care/adoption system. This paper will present different views, both good and bad, of adoptive and non adoptive foster parents: the experiences, emotions, and feelings they experience in wanting to be a permanent parent and placement for their foster child /children, when they are unable due to various circumstances. An Evaluation Of Gastrointestinal Parasites In The Mixed Breed/Pure Breed Pound Dog Population Of East Baton Rouge Parish, Stalanda L. Bradford

ABSTRACT An evaluation of gastrointestinal parasites was performed on mixed breed and pure breed pound dogs of East Baton Rouge Parish. Fecal samples were analyzed by the Modified Sheather's Sugar Floatation Technique. Of the 54 canine specimens, 55.6% were female and 44.4% were males. Overall, 19 of the 54 (35.19%) canines were infected. The male canines had the higher infectious condition of the two genders, and the crossbred canines had the higher infectious condition of the two breeds. Also, hookworms were the most prevalent gastrointestinal parasites found within this population.
