The present study examines complex relationships between fathering and children's social, behavioral, and cognitive development. The participants were 57 families with a child between the ages of 7 and 12. Fathers were interviewed about their disciplinary practices, work history, and day to day involvement with their children. Fathers also completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991) which is designed to assess children's internalizing and externalizing behavior. Mothers were administered the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale - Survey Form (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984), the CBCL, and a background questionnaire. Humic substances are of current interest because of their roles in environmental processes involving pollutants. It is also becoming recognized that humic substances may interfere in analysis of environmental samples though the possible adverse effects do not appear to be fully appreciated. The present effort focuses on determining whether humic materials interfere in the analysis of nitrite in water using the Griess reaction. This is a well-known reaction using nitrosation to gjve a diazonium salt followed by coupling with an appropriate reagent to form a dye. A Study Of The Seasonal Composition And Abundance Of Phytoplankton And Autotrophic Picoplankton In A Brackish Water Lake In Portsmouth Virginia, Jennifer Leigh Wolny

The phytoplankton and autotrophic picoplankton populations of Hoffler Lake, a brackish-water lake in Portsmouth, Virginia, were monitored from May 1997 through May 1998, Analyses of the phytoplankton community using the Utennohl method showed a dominance of Chlorophytes (61-88% of the total abundance) throughout the year, including a winter bloom of Chlamydomonas snowii (maximum concentration of 2.5 x 101 cells/L). Subdominants were Cyanobacteria (10-33% of the total abundance) whose composition included several species of Anabaena, Lyngbya, and a fall bloom of Microcoleus sp. Diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cryptophytes played a secondary role in the phytoplankton community of Hoffler Lake. …

Rhythmic Growth Of Target And Spiral Spherulites Of Crystalline Polymer Blends, Thein Kyu, Hw Chiu, Aj Guenthner, Y Okabe, H Saito, T Inoue

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Numerical calculations reveal that the target and spiral growth patterns in spherulites can be generated from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (model C) by coupling a conserved compositional order parameter and a nonconserved crystal ordering parameter. Of particular interest is that the periodic concentric rings (target) or the spirals at the spherulitic core remain stationary in both the crystal (orientational) ordering field and the concentration field. Another intriguing observation is that the growth of target and spiral spherulites occurs in a stepwise fashion in synchronism with the rhythmic energy dissipation during crystallization.
