A great deal has been made of the dire circumstances facing imperiled tallgrass ecosystems in the future-and with good reason. With more than 98 percent of all tallgrass and tallgrass savanna already converted to cultivated farmland and other nearly irreversible land uses, tallgrass ecosystems now teeter on the brink of total collapse. Into this bleak condition leap the authors of Valley of Grass: Tallgrass Prairie and Parkland of the Red River Valley Region. The influence of human activities on riparian zone vegetation differs markedly by ecoregion and stream size. Large rivers, dams and water diversions affect ecological processes more than local land uses do. However, for small streams, the reverse is generally true. Examples demonstrating these relationships include studies completed on the Missouri River in North Dakota, the Platte River in Nebraska, and Foster Creek in western South Dakota. On the Missouri River, damming has stopped river meandering and the regeneration of riparian forests in gaps between reservoirs. Populations of the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) in Kansas are managed to maintain population size while providing recreational hunting potential. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the effect of adding an early hunting season (late September-October) to the regular season (November-late January). We compared the hunting methods used and the harvest of greater prairie-chickens during early and regular hunting seasons for 1990-91 and 1991-92. The use of dogs and walkup hunting techniques were emphasized in early season, whereas pass shooting in feeding fields was emphasized in the regular season. During early season, the reported …

This essay suggests that there is a discrepancy between historical accounts of the "natural" state of the Great Plains by European explorers and the likely strong influence of the North American Indians resident in the area. The preconceived notion of the "Great American Wilderness" appears to have obscured the explorers' perceptions of the many ways in which the indigenous peoples had manipulated and influenced both the vegetation and the abundance of animal life in the Plains. Clearly, this challenge of the "total wilderness" paradigm has major implications for future restorations in the Great Plains.

I analyzed primary literature, spanning 42 years (1948-1990) that addressed buffalograss and blue grama's response to fire; no relevant literature has been published since 1990. The results suggest that fire in shortgrass steppe need not be negative. Plant response to fire depends mainly on levels of precipitation, though some studies indicated that the season during which fire occurs may also affect recovery of buffalograss and blue grama.

This book summarizes the wealth of new information on tallgrass prairie ecology gleaned from over fifteen years of intensive study of the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area in the Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas. Because the Flint Hills' steep topography and shallow soils made the region unsuitable for plowing, the area contains the largest tracts of native tallgrass prairie anywhere. The 3,427 hectare Konza site has been the focus of research since 1972 and funded since 1981 by the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program. LTER also funds research at twenty other sites representing all major North American …

The transition of air/ground communications, from its present analog structure to a new digital communications architecture, will span a 10-year time frame. Testing to date indicates that the potential for interference from the digital system to the analog system would be critical, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. A Vascular Flora Of Jackson County, Alabama, Kristin Renée Brodeur

Theses

The county is herein documented to support 1,272 species and infraspecific taxa. During the course of this study, 359 county records were produced, and 18 new taxa were recorded as occurring in the state for the first time. The vascular flora is demonstrably rich, even in comparison to other ecosystematic studies completed within the State. In contrast to other counties and in conformity with a long land and water use history, Jackson County has nearly 20% of the flora comprising alien taxa. As expected and evidenced by the life-form spectra dominated by hemicryptophytes and therophytes, the species are well-adapted to …

Geochemical analyses of coral skeletons are increasingly used to estimate past sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In this paper we suggest that the standard method of calibrating geochemical time series against a (usually short) local time series requires modification. In order to draw large‐scale inferences about climate from coral proxy data it is also necessary to (1) calibrate against larger fields such as the local gridded data sets and (2) validate results against an independent data set (e.g., early 20th century). Oviposition preference by European corn borers, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), for or against transgenic corn would influence amounts of refuge required for resistance management. The objective of this research was to determine if various Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn transgenic events influence O. nubilalis oviposition. All commercially available events (currently 5) were evaluated, plus 1 experimental event. Results from 3 independent studies are reported, including 3 field-cage experiments with vegetative corn, 2 field-cage experiments with reproductive corn, and 2 field experiments with natural O. nubilalis on reproductive corn. Integration is simultaneously an epistemology, psychology, sociology of change and theory of history. It is the theoretical foundation of Sorokin’s general sociology and later works on the crisis of modernity, altruism and social reconstruction. This paper delineates the evolution of the concept from Social and cultural Dynamics to Sorokin’s work at the Harvard Research Center in Creative Altruism. The methods for production of recessed oxygen microelectrodes developed by Whalen, et al. (1967) and improved upon by Linsenmeier, et al. (1987) are dated production methods by the standards of sensor production of the current time. The production process for this type of polarographic oxygen sensing electrode has remained unchanged for over 10 years, and is a time consuming, extremely low-yield process. The goal of this project has been to use the techniques of micromanufacturing available at the Institute for Micromanufacturing at Louisiana Tech University to construct a recessed oxygen microelectrode with a batch process that has higher yield than …

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

Regulatory agencies intervene in risky situations by outlawing practices that impose risks on society or by proscribing practices that reduce risk. Because public resources for enforcing regulation are limited, public policy has recently emphasized maximizing the benefit from enforcement by considering the risk reduction achievable from each intervention. This emphasis requires a shift of resources to monitoring situations in which regulatory violations are most likely, their welfare effects are most serious, and their detection is probable and relatively inexpensive. This article is a risk-based monitoring model applied to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) import monitoring program. Although some components …

The Vincent Translation Project began in 1973 with the goal of producing “a modern American English edition of the extant works” of Vincent de Paul. Marie Poole explains the way the project is conducted, its challenges, and its contributions to scholarship. It is particularly through Vincent’s correspondence that we understand who he was as a person. Poole describes his time and his personality, especially as the latter was impacted by his Gascon heritage. She also specifies his relevance for many types of people today.
