Sharing Space: Why Racial Goodwill Isn't Enough, Sharon E. Rush

Racism is understood by most White people to be an attitude of prejudice toward Blacks. In contrast, Blacks define racism more inclusively; it is a system of institutional preferences for Whites, resulting from historically ingrained prejudices Whites have against Blacks. People of goodwill are disinclined to attribute racial connotations to ordinary, everyday negative interactions involving Whites and people of color as long as the Whites are people of goodwill (people who do not think they have prejudiced attitudes). Second, goodwill comfort is important to maintain, causing many Whites to shy away from any discussions about race. People of goodwill have …

Cold Tolerance And Fatty Acid Composition Of Striped Bass, White Bass, And Their Hybrids, Anita M. Kelly, Christopher C. Kohler

Cold tolerance of striped bass Morone saxatilis, white bass M. chrysops, palmetto bass (female striped bass × male white bass), and sunshine bass (female white bass × male striped bass) were compared under controlled laboratory conditions. Two groups of each taxon were acclimated at 20°C in a recirculating-water system housed in an environmental chamber and were fed either a natural or prepared diet for 84 d. The fatty acid composition of the natural diet was 13% more unsaturated than that of the prepared diet. Fish fed the natural diet subsequently had unsaturated:saturated fatty acid ratios 10–25% higher than …

Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Can Infect Cd4+ T Lymphocytes And Induce Programmed Cell Death During Acute Infection Of Cattle, M. T. C. Winkler, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones

Acute infection of cattle with bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) represses cell-mediated immunity, which can lead to secondary bacterial infections. Since BHV-1 can induce apoptosis of cultured lymphocytes, we hypothesized that these virus-host interactions occur in cattle. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed lymph nodes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) after calves were infected with BHV-1. In situ terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase- mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining of lymphoid tissues (pharyngeal tonsil, cervical, retropharyngeal, and inguinal) was used to detect apoptotic cells. Calves infected with BHV-1 for 7 days revealed increased apoptotic cells near the corticomedullary junction in lymphoid follicles and …
