A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality Type And Emotional Response To Athletic Injury, Jasmin C. R. Hutchinson Jan 1999

A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality Type And Emotional Response To Athletic Injury, Jasmin C. R. Hutchinson

Masters Theses

This investigation was designed to examine emotional response to athletic injury using personality constructs within reversal theory. Twenty-five (male = 19, female = 6) collegiate athletes, ranging in age from 18 to 22 years (mean = 19.95, SD = 1.11) who sustained a minimal criteria injury during a six-week data collection period participated in this study. Each athlete's total mood disturbance (TMD) was measured pre-injury and post-injury using the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Athlete's personality orientation was measured using the Paratelic Dominance Scale (PDS). A dependent t-test indicated a significant increase in TMD scores following injury (p < 0.05), thus indicating overall mood disturbance in injured athletes. An independent t-test comparing paratelic and telic dominant athletes on TMD difference scores revealed non-significant results (p = 0.40). Methodological and theoretical reasons for this are examined and implications for further study of reversal theory and athletic injury are discussed.

Obtaining And Sampling Of High Quality Energetic-Protein Mixtures (Pottages) Of Tuber-Cereal-Leguminous Bases In The Candelaria Area, Maria Lilian Maldonado Chavez Jan 1999

Obtaining And Sampling Of High Quality Energetic-Protein Mixtures (Pottages) Of Tuber-Cereal-Leguminous Bases In The Candelaria Area, Maria Lilian Maldonado Chavez

Theses and Dissertations

Specially designed foodstuffs destined for children of weaning age in the community of Candelaria were developed and evaluated biologically. These victuals had as bases combinations of tubers-cereals-legumes of high nutritional quality to be implemented in the home. Based on the availability of food and alimentary habits of the region, seven mixtures were formulated of triples and quadruples containing tubers (potato, oca, papaliza, and isano); cereals (rice, wheat, corn, and quinua); and legumes (tarwi, broad bean, and peanut). The cereal-leguminous proportion was maintained as one complement and the addition of the tubers. These mixes were subjected to biological tests, obtaining incremental …

Why Liberals Should Chuck The Exclusionary Rule, Christopher Slobogin Jan 1999

Why Liberals Should Chuck The Exclusionary Rule, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article makes the case against the exclusionary rule from a "liberal" perspective. Moving beyond the inconclusive empirical data on the efficacy of the rule, it uses behavioral and motivational theory to demonstrate why the rule is structurally unable to deter individual police officers from performing most unconstitutional searches and seizures. It also argues, contrary to liberal dogma, that the rule is poor at promoting Fourth Amendment values at the systemic, departmental level. Finally, the article contends that the rule stultifies liberal interpretation of the Fourth Amendment, in large part because of judicial heuristics that grow out of constant exposure …

Setting An Agenda For A Study Of Tax And Black Culture, Beverly I. Moran Jan 1999

Setting An Agenda For A Study Of Tax And Black Culture, Beverly I. Moran

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

At present the Internal Revenue Code unthinkingly reflects many aspects of white culture including historical opportunities that whites have received for wealth building and marriage. In order for the federal tax laws to tax fairly all cultures within the purview of taxation must also find their values reflected. The article sets out how the tax laws might begin to incorporate black culture.

Lord Denning And The Influence Of William Temple, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 1999

Lord Denning And The Influence Of William Temple, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Lord Denning is probably one of the most influential English judges in the twentieth century,' and is certainly its most colourful. He recently celebrated his one hundredth birthday,2 and a symposium to honour this occasion and celebrate the life of this remarkable man was held at Buckingham University.3 Lord Denning himself was too frail to attend this symposium, although a separate (and quieter) celebration was also held in his honour at his home at the Lawn in Whitchurch. I was deeply saddened to learn that Lord Denning passed away a few weeks after, on 5th March 1999.

Asking The Right Questions, David Luban Jan 1999

Asking The Right Questions, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

At this Symposium, we have heard about forms of law practice that raise large questions about the lawyer's role. My sole theme in the present essay is that we often ask the wrong large questions. Too often, the questions about multidisciplinary practice ("MDP"), mediation and arbitration, and in-house lawyering are whether they are good for lawyers and good for clients. These are questions, I will suggest, that the market itself will decide. The right question is not whether new roles with no rules are good for lawyers and clients, but rather whether they are good for the rest of us-"us" …

Experience As Text: The History Of Externship Pedagogy At The Washington College Of Law, American University, Peter Jaszi, Ann Shalleck, Marlana Valdez, Susan Carle

Clinical Law Review

In this article we analyze the historical development of a supervised externship program at American University, Washington College of Law ("WCL"). We trace the origins of our particular pedagogic goals and program design to the history and culture of our institution, in the hopes that this form of self-reflection will be useful to others making their own choices about these matters. Through this self-study we have realized that - contrary to the way clinical literature often conceives of program development - we did not start by articulating a complete set of goals, around which we then built a program. Instead, …

Narrative And Client-Centered Representation: What Is A True Believer To Do When His Two Favorite Theories Collide?, John B. Mitchell Jan 1999

Narrative And Client-Centered Representation: What Is A True Believer To Do When His Two Favorite Theories Collide?, John B. Mitchell

Clinical Law Review

By nature I am a somewhat skeptical person. I do not trust much of what is in the papers, except perhaps the box scores contained in the sports section. Nor am I tempted to send away $19.95 plus shipping and handling for some cream which, when rubbed over the surface of my faded and rust-pitted car, is promised to magically restore the paint to its original condition. Yet when it comes to theories of Narrative and Client-Centered Representation, I believe with all my heart and soul. In fact, it is probably fair to say that these theories provide the two …

Unwritten Laws And Customs, Local Legal Cultures, And Clinical Legal Education, Andrea M. Seielstad Jan 1999

Unwritten Laws And Customs, Local Legal Cultures, And Clinical Legal Education, Andrea M. Seielstad

Clinical Law Review

As a clinical teacher I have the opportunity each semester to witness third-year law students discover, in many cases for the first time in their lives, what it means to be a practitioner of law. Through representation of real clients, student interns have the opportunity to engage in a variety of typical lawyering activities, such as interviewing and counseling of clients and witnesses, case planning, preparation of written pleadings and other documents, negotiation, and trial advocacy. Informed by a law school education that emphasizes the litigation process and the study of the written law, including certain areas of substantive law …

Partnerships That Work: National Service And Business In Welfare To Work, Robert J. Keast Jan 1999

Partnerships That Work: National Service And Business In Welfare To Work, Robert J. Keast

Partnerships/Community

Welfare-to-work has come to the fore of the social policy debate in recent years. This especially has been the case since the enactment of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA). PRWORA significantly altered over 60 years of American welfare policy by creating a public assistance program with the aim of replacing public sector welfare checks with private sector paychecks. In order to reach this goal, time limits on receipt of assistance as well as stronger work requirements have become central in moving people from welfare and into work.

Opinion: The Public Intellectual, Service Learning, And Activist Research, Ellen Cushman Jan 1999

Opinion: The Public Intellectual, Service Learning, And Activist Research, Ellen Cushman

Service Learning, General

While I support the good intentions of those who have recently proposed definitions of the public intellectual, I find these definitions problematic in their narrow delineation of the word "public"- they focus on a "public" consisting of middle and upper class policy makers, administrators, and professionals, and, in doing so, omit an important site for uniting knowledge-making and political action: the local community.

Self-Assessment Rubric For The Institutionalization Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Andrew Furco Jan 1999

Self-Assessment Rubric For The Institutionalization Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Andrew Furco

Service Learning, General

The Self-Assessment Rubric for the Institutionalization of Service-Learning in Higher Education was designed to assist members of the higher education community in gauging the progress of their service-learning institutionalization efforts on their campus.

The rubric is structured by five dimensions that are considered by most service-learning experts to be key factors for higher education service-learning institutionalization. Each dimension is comprised of several components that characterize the dimension. For each component, a threestage continuum of development has been established. Progression from Stage One: Critical Mass Building to Stage Three: Sustained Institutionalization suggests that the institution is moving closer to fully institutionalizing …

Service-Learning For Preservice Teachers: Ethical Dilemmas For Practice, David M. Donahue Jan 1999

Service-Learning For Preservice Teachers: Ethical Dilemmas For Practice, David M. Donahue

Service Learning, General

Increasingly in the United States, service-learning is being used to educate preservice teachers. Service varies greatly in its ethical foundation, however, and service-learning presents new teachers with a variety of dilemmas revealing the moral and political nature of teaching and service. This article presents one case of four preservice teachers writing curriculum as a service to a community agency hoping to promote service geared toward social justice among high school students. The case highlights ethical dilemmas faced by teachers in the process and illustrates the potential of service-learning to educate teachers for the moral imperative of their profession.

Educational Excellence For All Children Act Of 1999, U.S. Department Of Education Jan 1999

Educational Excellence For All Children Act Of 1999, U.S. Department Of Education

Service Learning, General

The President announced that he would shortly send to the Congress the "Educational Excellence for All Children Act of 1999," his proposal to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA). This legislation reaffirms the critical role of the Federal Government in working with schools, school districts, and States to promote educational excellence for all children. Every child, parent, grandparent, and taxpayer deserves high quality public schools in their communities.

More specifically, the proposal would build on the 1994 ESEA reauthorization, which established the core principle that disadvantaged children should achieve to the same challenging academic standards as …
