Minority Housing Conditions In Urban Settings: Proposals For The Improvement Of Las Vegas' Amerindian Homes, Patricia Epee Stissi
Minority Housing Conditions In Urban Settings: Proposals For The Improvement Of Las Vegas' Amerindian Homes, Patricia Epee Stissi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Native Americans living on reservations occupy some of the worst housing in the United States. But, nowadays, both on reservations and in urban settings, a small majority (about 56%) of them use the same types of architectural space as any other Americans. For example, HUD homes on the reservations, apartment complexes and small houses in cities, sometimes Public Housing. This research will explore a way to improve American Indians housing conditions while accentuating the need for sustainable and affordable housing in harmony with the tribal environment, because they bring a unique cultural heritage to urban society; For the purpose of …
Handling Police Misconduct In An Ethical Way, Daniel Patrick Barry
Handling Police Misconduct In An Ethical Way, Daniel Patrick Barry
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Police misconduct has always been a serious problem in America. Historically, reform efforts have failed due to an organizational culture that is resistant to change. Past reforms have been aimed at individual incidents, disregarding underlying organizational problems. Improving public perception has been the goal of past reforms, as opposed to improving organizational soundness; Reform efforts need to be directed at enhancing police organizational culture. These changes will improve workplace ethos, allowing virtuous conduct to flourish. Advancing this organizational culture will encourage police officers to act in a manner consistent with the high trust we vest in this vocation; Justice, Truthfulness …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Hidden Epidemic And Its Effect On Society, Donald Phelan Stewart
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a debilitating and sometimes disabling mental disorder, is emerging as one that is costly to society from many perspectives. PTSD sufferers commonly experience an inability to function normally within the workplace or within their social and family relationships. The disorder triggers strong emotional responses, changes social interaction and precipitates primary and secondary deviant behavior. This work focuses on non war related civilian incidence of the disorder. It examines the causes, circumstances and processes leading to the onset of the disorder and explores societal reaction to PTSD sufferers. Central to the work are the individual case studies …
Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks
Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Recent literature on quality of life indicators and sustainability has focused on quantifiable measurements, not qualitative. In actuality, the whole concept of quality of life is a subjective valuation of a myriad of issues by individuals. The purpose of this thesis, based on the testing of a model, is to identify these subjective quality of life variables and determine which variables are currently significant to residents in Southern Nevada. This thesis determines if quality of life, measured by individual respondents overall satisfaction with living in Southern Nevada, is a function of different social characteristics by looking at the following community …

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich
The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich
Center for Policy Research
This paper summarizes the results of other analyses by the author with regard to the importance of relative cohort size (RCS) in determining male relative income (the income of young adults relative to prime-age workers) and general patterns of economic growth, and in turn influencing fertility in the currently more-developed nations. It then goes on to demonstrate that these same effects appear to have been operating in all of the 100-odd nations which have experienced the fertility transition since 1950. Parameter estimates based on the experience of all 189 countries identified by the United Nations between 1950 and 1995 are …
Testing The Stability Of A Production Function With Urbanization As A Shift Factor: An Application Of Non-Stationary Panel Data Techniques, Suzanne Mccoskey, Chihwa Kao
Testing The Stability Of A Production Function With Urbanization As A Shift Factor: An Application Of Non-Stationary Panel Data Techniques, Suzanne Mccoskey, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
Urban economists have long sought to explain the relationship between urbanization levels and output. In this paper we revisit this question and test the long-run stability of a production function with urbanization using non-stationary panel data techniques. Our results show that a long-run relationship between urbanization output per worker and capital per worker cannot be rejected for either our sample of 30 developing countries or our sample of 22 developed countries. In addition, we estimate the long-run average effects on GDPW of urbanization and capital. These results offer newer insights and potential for dynamic urban models than the simple cross-section …
A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Tests For Cointegration In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao
A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Tests For Cointegration In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
This paper surveys recent developments and provides Monte Carlo comparison on various tests proposed for cointegration in panel data. In particular, tests for two panel models, varying intercepts and varying slopes, and varying intercepts and common slopes are presented from the literature with a total of seven tests being simulated. In all cases, results on empirical size and size-adjusted power are given.
On The Estimation And Inference Of A Cointegrated Regression In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao
On The Estimation And Inference Of A Cointegrated Regression In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
The main contribution of this paper is to add to the literature by suggesting a dynamic OLS (DOLS) estimator and providing a serious comparison of the finite sample properties of the OLS, fully modified OLS (FMOLS), and DOLS estimators in panel cointegrated regression models. Monte Carlo results illustrate the sampling behavior of the proposed estimators and show that (1) the OLS estimator has a non-negligible bias in finite samples, (2) the FMOLS estimator does not improve over the OLS estimator in general, and (3) the DOLS outperforms both the OLS and FMOLS estimators.
Educational And Occupational Aspirations Of Rural High School Seniors In The Private And Public Schools In Northwest Iowa, Duane Bajema
Educational And Occupational Aspirations Of Rural High School Seniors In The Private And Public Schools In Northwest Iowa, Duane Bajema
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Research has suggested that rural youth have lower educational and occupational aspirations than their nonrural counterparts, and they may experience barriers to educational and occupational attainment. Discrepancies and barriers that may exist have implications for educational policy and educational planning.
Seventeen rural high schools in northwest Iowa were examined; thirteen public and four private schools. Rural high school students were studied to examine their perceptions concerning potential educational and occupational barriers. Student characteristics and qualities were examined based on where the student lived and the type of school they attended. Students who had been involved in the agricultural curricula in …
The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge
The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research addressed the question of the importance of the service encounter (both functional and social support components) and the importance of the technical component in consumers' judgements of service quality. To date in the literature no one has attempted to measure in a field setting, the relative contribution to the judgement of service quality of each of these components. This research switched the focus of the service quality's definition from the provider's point of view to the consumer. By measuring the three service components' importance, the researcher hoped to obtain a clearer understanding of the consumer's determination as to …

Women's Voices In Education: Two Jamaican Life Histories., Ethel L. King-Mckenzie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The main purpose of this study is to recover the marginalized voices of women educators in Jamaica by turning their oral life histories into text. It was not possible to interview all women educators in Jamaica so I have used the life histories of two women who were the 'first' women to take positions in educational leadership in two spheres that were once male dominated. Both women have made it to the zenith of the education profession. These women relate their life experiences and the meanings they give to their work as educators. Women have always played important roles in …
Spatial Modeling Of Coastal Landscapes: Methodological And Scientific Applications., Mary Louise White
Spatial Modeling Of Coastal Landscapes: Methodological And Scientific Applications., Mary Louise White
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A number of issues related to landscape scale ecological modeling of the wetlands of southern Louisiana are examined in this study. First, using geostatistical methods, a new contour map of the wetland habitats in the Terrebonne basin of southern Louisiana is constructed from data collected in 1994. This map is proposed as the best field verified habitat map of the Terrebonne basin and contains statistical confidence intervals associated with the habitat contours. Second, the problem of how to evaluate the success of a landscape model prediction is investigated. The multiple resolution goodness of fit parameter Ft(k) is evaluated in detail …
Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher
Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation, I examine aspects of Japan's rural and agricultural restructuring using Aomori Prefecture's apple industry as a focal point. Though using multiple spatial scales, I concentrate most on changes in agriculture and economy in the Tsugaru region, Aomori's main apple-growing region. A historical overview of Tsugaru and its apple industry provides the background necessary for understanding today's circumstances. Archival and ethnographic methods examine modern-day changes and document the views of individual farmers and their families. Located at the northwestern-most tip of Japan's main island, the Tsugaru region was historically one of Japan's most remote and impoverished regions. The …

Magnetism Of Magnets: The Impact Of High School Magnet Programs On Desegregation And School Improvement In East Baton Rouge Parish., Alonzo Ray Luce
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The movement of school desegregation plans from mandatory means to voluntary means has led to a fierce debate. The school desegregation problem is encapsulated by two competing strategies: making a plan that enforces racial balance, and making a plan that stops white flight. The purpose of this study was to describe how high schools in East Baton Rouge Parish implemented court approved magnet programs, and to examine the results brought about at each of the high schools in terms of desegregation and school improvement. The study was designed to answer the following research questions: (1) How have high schools in …
"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin
"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The problem addressed by this study was twofold: what rhetorical strategies does a pornographic text actually employ? and what impact does that message have on its mate readers' sexual ideology? The first year's issues of Playboy comprise the specific text to be analyzed because Playboy is still the most popular men's magazine in the world and because various critics indicated that it was the prototype for current pornographic texts. Furthermore, this pornographic text has always been a public artifact as opposed to the surreptitious or illegal forms of pornography, which made it an apt choice for a rhetorical study. Three …
Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine
Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation seeks to discover and analyze the divergent ways that higher education has been legitimated by American discourse in the twentieth century. Institutions of higher learning have been able to survive and flourish because they have been seen as essential to the health of a democracy, of a free-market economy, and of religious institutions. However, the explanations for such legitimacy have been diverse and varied. Bormann's fantasy theme analysis can account for the values and beliefs that form the institutional environments shaping and legitimating organizations such as colleges and universities. Fantasy themes expressed in popular discourse are expressions of …
Beyond Black And White: The Civil Rights Movement In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1945--1972., Mary Jacqueline Hebert
Beyond Black And White: The Civil Rights Movement In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1945--1972., Mary Jacqueline Hebert
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The civil rights movement in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, went beyond a battle between blacks and whites over segregation. Within each racial group, factions developed along class, generational, and educational lines. Interactions among these groups shaped the nature and pace of change in the city. In 1945, black World War II veterans launched the movement. Committed to working within the legal system, they established voter registration schools, participated in the 1953 bus boycott, and sued to equalize teachers' salaries and to integrate public schools. In the 1960s, black college students rose to prominence in the movement and used direct action, including …
Family Portraits: Contemporary Women Novelists And The Nuclear Family., Tamra Lynn Horton
Family Portraits: Contemporary Women Novelists And The Nuclear Family., Tamra Lynn Horton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A society whose economy becomes increasingly dependent on commodity fetishism cultivates obsessive materialistic desire in its subjects. The demand for mass consumerism buoys reification, a mania wherein human beings are analogous to goods and vice versa. Successful reification depends upon hegemonic apparatuses: social, legal, and political agencies of dominant ideology. Reification is perhaps most fully realized in the form of fetishized human relationships. In the United States today, the most coercive and unassailable hegemonic apparatus is the institutionalized nuclear family, a social and legal affiliation between individuals so dogmatically fetishized as to have become compulsory. Contemporary American women writers are …
College Choice: Psychological Factors Influencing *Postsecondary Aspirations And Expectations Of Ninth-Grade Students., Stuart Earle Johnson
College Choice: Psychological Factors Influencing *Postsecondary Aspirations And Expectations Of Ninth-Grade Students., Stuart Earle Johnson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between several variables which help to explain the process by which adolescents decide to pursue a college education. Previous models were enhanced by including important theoretical constructs well documented in social cognitive and attributional theories as elements of human agency. The psychological constructs, self-efficacy and locus of control were the primary focus of attention as independent variables and for their significance as mediating variables affecting the relationship between previously identified factors attributed to students' postsecondary attendance decisions, and students' college aspirations and expectations. Particular attention was given to the college choice …
The Miskito Settlement Landscape Of Eastern Honduras, With Emphasis On The Moravian Contribution., Benjamin Farr Tillman
The Miskito Settlement Landscape Of Eastern Honduras, With Emphasis On The Moravian Contribution., Benjamin Farr Tillman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation documents the influence of Moravian missionary activities on the Miskito settlement landscape in eastern Honduras---particularly in the areas of settlement morphology, housing, agriculture, and cemeteries. Upon their arrival to the Mosquito Coast in 1849, the missionaries employed a three pronged approach consisting of proselyting, medical treatment, and education to convert the majority of the indigenous population. The missionaries' resulting influence was a significant component and major cultural force in the development of a distinctive Protestant region within Catholic Central America. Moravian contributions to the settlement landscape in sixty-four Miskito villages of eastern Honduras were documented through field observations …

One of the major fallacies of Western civilization, according to Alfred North Whitehead,' was the propensity of Western thinkers to assume that ideas generated within their intellectual landscape were indicative of reality itself. Although some phases of Western science, notably physics and philosophy, have transcended their parochial origins, aspects of the old medieval synthesis still remain in the Western worldview. The gradual fragmentation of the old categories of natural history and theology into the isolated sciences and disciplines of today has produced a myriad of separate bodies of knowledge complete with their professional priesthoods and has allowed considerable slippage in …
Treating Kids Right, Christopher Slobogin
Treating Kids Right, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The concept of amenability to treatment is, in theory, at the core of juvenile delinquency jurisprudence. From its inception as an entity separate from the adult criminal court, the juvenile court was meant to focus on the rehabilitative potential of children. On this premise, the central inquiry in a juvenile delinquency proceeding should be whether the child found delinquent is amenable to treatment. Disposition should depend upon the rehabilitative potential and needs of the juvenile, and only if no treatment is available in the juvenile system should transfer to adult court be considered. In practice, amenability to treatment may never …
