Editorial: Mental Health Needs Assessments Performed By Four Urban American Indian Organizations, D.K. Novins Jan 1999

Editorial: Mental Health Needs Assessments Performed By Four Urban American Indian Organizations, D.K. Novins

Native Health Database Full Text

In 1991, the Indian Health Service funded a nationwide initiative with the goal of determining the need for culturally appropriate mental health services among American Indian people residing in urban areas. In the author's opinion, the assessment method used in this initiative is a valuable, fresh approach that is a significant change from flawed attempts to make these assessments in the past.

Time Spent On Higher-Order Tasks In Two Teacher-Apprentice Options, Elizabeth A. Wilkins-Canter, Audrey T. Edwards Jan 1999

Time Spent On Higher-Order Tasks In Two Teacher-Apprentice Options, Elizabeth A. Wilkins-Canter, Audrey T. Edwards

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study investigates the process of assisting a teacher prior to student teaching. Teacher candidates in two certification programs kept a log documenting the tasks they did during their on-site experiences and the time spent on eight types of tasks. A one-way analysis for repeated measures showed that, in both programs, candidates spent a majority of their time on clerical tasks, despite the value they saw in interpersonal contact. A t test for independent measures revealed no significant difference between constant and varied placements in time spent on teaching a whole class and on other highly valued tasks.

Education School Challenges: The Increasing Demands On K-8 Teachers, A. J. Benson Jan 1999

Education School Challenges: The Increasing Demands On K-8 Teachers, A. J. Benson

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The educational needs of future K-8 teachers in the areas of mathematics and science are greater as a result of the increased (and, I would add, appropriate) student expectations in the area of mathematics and science as enunciated in the SOL and the specific content areas as described in the new licensure requirements. The sophistication and understanding of science and mathematics that is needed at both the elementary school and middle school levels is indeed substantial. However, proficiency in science and mathematics is only one portion of the total needs of new teachers. How are we all, from the Colleges …

Bringing Dignity Back To Light: Publicity Rights And The Eclipse Of The Tort Of Appropriation Of Identity, Jonathan Kahn Jan 1999

Bringing Dignity Back To Light: Publicity Rights And The Eclipse Of The Tort Of Appropriation Of Identity, Jonathan Kahn

Faculty Scholarship

Over the years, the privacy-based tort of appropriation has become eclipsed by its flashier cousin, publicity. Such is perhaps to be expected in a world where seemingly everything has been turned into a saleable commodity. When celebrities are perpetually trading on their names and images in the open market, it may seem quaint, at best, to invoke a dignity as a basis for protecting personal identity. But this is exactly what happens. In case after case, even as they demand restitution for the converted monetary value of their names and images, celebrities also invoke dignitary concerns as a prime motivation …

Economics V. Equity: Do Market-Based Environmental Reforms Exacerbate Environmental Injustice?, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 1999

Economics V. Equity: Do Market-Based Environmental Reforms Exacerbate Environmental Injustice?, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

For almost three decades, the federal government and state governments have addressed environmental problems primarily through "command and control" regulation. Under this traditional approach, the federal government establishes uniform national pollution limits ("command") that the federal or state governments impose on individual polluters through a system of permits or other controls. However, as the command and control approach has eliminated many of the most prolific sources of pollution, the incremental cost of cleaning up the remaining pollution has risen dramatically, and command and control regulation has become politically less attractive. In addition, command and control regulation may be too rigid …

The Constitution As A Whole: A Partial Political Science Perspective, Mark A. Graber Jan 1999

The Constitution As A Whole: A Partial Political Science Perspective, Mark A. Graber

University of Richmond Law Review

The Bill of Rights: Creationand Reconstruction ("The Bill of Rights")' is a professionally rewarding and disturbing masterpiece. The work is professionally rewarding because Professor Akhil Amar develops a meticulously detailed, historically sophisticated, and largely persuasive account of how the liberties set out in the Bill of Rights were originally understood and the original relationship between the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment. This is state of the art legal scholarship that will no doubt influence the way the next generation of constitutional lawyers and historians study fundamental constitutional rights. Professor Amar's book is professionally disturbing in part because, having …

The Charleston Policy: Substance Or Abuse?, Kimani Paul-Emile Jan 1999

The Charleston Policy: Substance Or Abuse?, Kimani Paul-Emile

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

In 1989, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) adopted a policy that, according to subjective criteria, singled out for drug testing, certain women who sought prenatal care and childbirth services would be tested for prohibited substances. Women who tested positive were arrested, incarcerated and prosecuted for crimes ranging from misdemeanor substance possession to felony substance distribution to a minor. In this Article, the Author argues that by intentionally targeting indigent Black women for prosecution, the MUSC Policy continued the United States legacy of their systematic oppression and resulted in the criminalizing of Black Motherhood.

Turning The Tide In The Civil Rights Revolution: Elbert Tuttle And The Desegregation Of The University Of Georgia, Anne S. Emanuel Jan 1999

Turning The Tide In The Civil Rights Revolution: Elbert Tuttle And The Desegregation Of The University Of Georgia, Anne S. Emanuel

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. So it was in 1960 when Elbert Tuttle became the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the federal appellate court with jurisdiction over most of the Deep South. Part of the genius of the Republic lies in the carefully calibrated structure of the federal courts of appeal. One assumption underlying the structure is that judges from a particular state might bear an allegiance to the interests of that state, which would be reflected in their opinions. Forming panels of judges from each of several states is supposed …

Introduction: Critical Race Praxis And Legal Scholarship, Keith Aoki, Margaret Chon Jan 1999

Introduction: Critical Race Praxis And Legal Scholarship, Keith Aoki, Margaret Chon

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The publication of this symposium issue is an occasion for three distinct and yet related celebrations. First, we honor the Western Law Teachers of Color, whose sixth annual meeting on the sublime Oregon Coast in 1998 provided the occasion for organizing the papers published here. Dean Strickland's preface, as well as Professors Linda Greene's and Jim Jones's essays examine the historical significance of this occasion in greater detail. Second, we engage in a festschrift of a particular member of this group-Professor Eric K. Yamamoto -whose publication of a book this year is a significant capstone to fifteen years of scholarship …

Introduction, Michigan Journal Of Race & Law

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The last Supreme Court decision addressing the use of race in admissions to institutions of higher education, Bakke v. Regents of the University of California, affirmed that the role of diversity in colleges and universities is both essential and compelling. Since Bakke, opponents and proponents have wrestled with ideology and theory, but have never had the benefit of a comprehensive theoretical framework that has been tested by reliable empirical data. The University of Michigan has drawn on several of the nation's leading, and most respected, researchers and scholars, to develop such a framework and verify its legitimacy with …

Expert Report Of Patricia Gurin, Patricia Gurin Jan 1999

Expert Report Of Patricia Gurin, Patricia Gurin

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

A racially and ethnically diverse university student body has far-ranging and significant benefits for all students, non-minorities and minorities alike. Students learn better in a diverse educational environment, and they are better prepared to become active participants in our pluralistic, democratic society once they leave such a setting. In fact, patterns of racial segregation and separation historically rooted in our national life can be broken by diversity experiences in higher education. This Report describes the strong evidence supporting these conclusions derived from three parallel empirical analyses of university students, as well as from existing social science theory and research.

Shaping Realities: A Study Of The Connection Between White Hegemony In Popular Culture And The Deprecatory Self-Image Of African Americans, Rebecca Thornton Jan 1999

Shaping Realities: A Study Of The Connection Between White Hegemony In Popular Culture And The Deprecatory Self-Image Of African Americans, Rebecca Thornton

Honors Theses

The following paper will examine how the breakdown of politically motivated racism easily translated into popular culture. Defining African Americans only as stereotypes allowed for the hegemony that had kept African Americans inferior, to endure into a new era, one dominated almost wholly by popular culture. Divided into three chapters, this paper will systematically demonstrate how historically, politically, socially, and ideologically the African American race has been castigated and prostrated by those in power.
