Deposit Rate Premiums And The Demand For Funds By Thrifts, David M. Aadland, Drew Dahl, Alan Stephens Jan 1999

Deposit Rate Premiums And The Demand For Funds By Thrifts, David M. Aadland, Drew Dahl, Alan Stephens

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We empirically examine interest rates established on the national market for insured thrift deposits during a period spanning passage of the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enhancement Act of 1989. Our analysis indicates that changes in the demand for funds by thrifts in periods of financial stress exerted a pronounced influence on the deposit rate premiums paid by thrifts over comparable Treasuries. This contrasts with the conventional wisdom that default risk is the primary systematic determinant of rate premiums.

New Evidence On Household Valuation Of Curbside Recycling, David M. Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper looks at the willingness to pay for and participate in a curbside recycling program based on a survey of 401 residents in Ogden, Utah. Modifying the Cameron and James ("Efficient Estimation Methods for 'Close-Ended' Contingent Valuation Surveys," The Review a/Economics and Statistics 69(1987):269-76) econometric model to fit ordered-interval data, we estimate that the mean willingness to pay for curbside recycling is $2.05 per month, and that 72% of the residents would willingly participate in such a program. Furthermore, females, young people, college-educated, those currently recycling without monetary reward, those regarding recycling as beneficial to the community and nation, …

The Nature Of Expertise: Implication For Teachers And Teaching, Ronald A. Smith, Richard G. Tiberius

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

How do teachers become experts at teaching-at helping their students become experts? In a culture dependent on high performance, teachers need to understand the nature of the expertise that their students want to acquire as well as the nature of their own expertise. How we view expertise determines the goals we set for our students, as well as the standards we use to inform and measure our own development as experts in teaching.

The Uses Of Uncertainty In The College Classroom, Virginia S. Lee Jan 1999

The Uses Of Uncertainty In The College Classroom, Virginia S. Lee

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Psychological research has corroborated the importance of uncertainty to learning at the psychophysiological level. Recent studies in brain dynamics have demonstrated that the brain manifests an inherent variability that increases with the presentation of new stimuli. This psychophysiological uncertainty plays a significant catalytic role in learning, It opens up the organism to experience, causing it to investigate the environment with enhanced receptivity, preparing it for different behavioral actions, and facilitating the central processing and encoding of information received from such renewed exploration. Searching, exploring, and trial-and-error behaviors indicate psychophysiological uncertainty and accompany the appearance of reorganization, stability, and progressive development …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Robert S. Weaton Jan 1999

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Robert S. Weaton

Graduate Research Papers

Beginning the process of transformation from classroom teacher, to that of administrator, educational leaders are drawn to the reality that schools have undergone tremendous change, and with it a new set of challenges in an effort to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. The key to effective schooling does not solely rely on whether or not a school changes, but rather on how that change takes place, and to what extent students, staff, and community develop ownership of the process. As a beginning practitioner pursuing the goal of becoming an administrator in the secondary school, the focus …

Models Of Mental Illness, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Although the concept of mental illness is central to the field of mental health and the practice of counseling, there is continuing disagreement about its definition. Several views are widely held. Each has important implications for understanding mental illness, determining which conditions are disorders and who has them, and choosing appropriate approaches to treatment. This controversy involves several important issues."

Counterconditioning, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "In counterconditioning a maladaptive response is eliminated by establishing a new response in the presence of the stimulus that initially controlled occurrence of the maladaptive response. In a classical study crying in the presence of a rabbit was eliminated by feeding the fearful child and gradually bringing the rabbit into the child's proximity while he ate."

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Winston Seegobin

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder precipitated by exposure to a traumatic event or a series of events. This event is usually experienced by an individual. However, PTSD can also develop as a result of observing or hearing of a traumatic event occurring in someone else's life (such as a relative or a close friend). PTSD was introduced as a disorder in 1980 in the DSM-III. The DSM-Ill-R's condition for diagnosis was the experiencing of a traumatic event that was "outside the range of usual human experience." However, in DSM-IV, the focus is not so much on …

Physiological Responses To Music: The Possible Link Between Volume And Hand Grip Strength, Holly Harrom

Capstone Research Projects

Both stimulating and relaxing music have been shown to affect human physiology. The affect of music volume on band grip strength is reported in this study. Eighteen subjects listened to four diverse music types at four different decibel levels, with strength being measured after each combination of style and volume. The data of individual subjects showed no correlation between volume and hand grip strength, however, the collective values of all subjects indicate that a direct relationship may exist.
