Strategic Planning For A Communication Department: Process And Promise, Catherine Konsky Jan 1999

Strategic Planning For A Communication Department: Process And Promise, Catherine Konsky

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of planning, most notably strategic planning, and describes a process for developing a department strategic plan by involving the entire faculty in its creation. Principles of business planning and small group communication are joined to address academic department planning needs. Moreover, planning needs to capitalize on the essential soft information lacking in separate groups of planners such as planning departments frequently used in business settings. Soft information refers to experiential knowledge that comes, in this case, from faculty, doing the job as opposed to relying on the numerical data that drive many business …

Theses

This applied learning project will deal with the implementation of empowerment in an organization and the importance of an implementation plan.

Research shows that resistance to change by management or front line employees can lead to the failure of the change. Resistance to change is a normal human reaction but can be minimized through effective change management.

Effective change management includes clear, understandable, complete communication at the appropriate time. The development of a change implementation plan can reduce the resistance to change by providing information that addresses employees concerns regarding the proposed change.

The purpose of this project is to …

Bulletproofing The Workplace: Symbol And Substance In Employment Discrimination Law Practice, Susan Bisom-Rapp Jan 1999

Bulletproofing The Workplace: Symbol And Substance In Employment Discrimination Law Practice, Susan Bisom-Rapp

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines how employment lawyers representing management play a role in creating data and affect the perception of employment disputes. More specifically, it explores how defense lawyers attempt to strategically position employers to safeguard these clients against discrimination and other employment-related litigation. A primary focus of their advice is on producing an evidentiary record that an employer can use defensively should the need ever arise. Defense attorneys, therefore, counsel employers to implement and carefully administer standardized employee evaluation systems and train supervisors how to write up and terminate employees without running afoul of the law.

It goes without saying …

Recent Dissertations On Service And Service-Learning Topics, Robert D. Shumer, Ann Treacy, Madeleine S. Hengel, Lily O'Donnell

Bibliographies

Rumor has it that there is very little research on service and service-leaming. A brief literature review of dissertations from 1990 onward revealed that over 110 studies have been completed on service and related topics. So much for the rumor!

Our intent in performing this literature review is to identify academic studies that have been completed in the past several years on issues related to service-learning. Covering a variety of interest areas and related topics, the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse is initially interested in identifying studies that add to the knowledge base on service-learning. The collection of titles, authors, and abstract …

Ambulatory Surgery Nurses' Perceptions Of Their Ability To Provide Individualized Patient Care, Rebecca L. Brown

This descriptive correlational study examined the extent to which nurses in an ambulatory surgery practice environment perceive their ability to individualize patient care. As patients shift to the outpatient setting, it is important to look at the effect this may have on individualizing patient care, a concept rooted in the foundation of the profession of nursing. Registered nurses from four ambulatory surgery sites within one large health care system in western Michigan were asked to rate the frequency which they performed select nursing care actions using the 45-item .Ambulatory Individualized Care Index (AICl). modified from van Servellen's (1988a) Individualized Care …

Will The Real Adam Smith Please Stand Up?: Teaching Social Economics In The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 1999

Will The Real Adam Smith Please Stand Up?: Teaching Social Economics In The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

Part of the difficulty of introducing social economics into the principles course is the perception that social economics is anathema to mainstream economics. As noted by Warren Samuels, however, "neoclassical economics is already a form of social economics" despite its "pretensions of methodological individualism and value-neutrality". Heilbroner also makes the case that the " ... the preponderance of great economists were aware of economics as explanation systems of particular socio-economic formations." Like it or not, economists err in omitting from their models what McCloskey calls "S" variables--variables representing the "social embeddedness" of values which direct human choices.

The Professional Beliefs And The Conditions That Support Integrated Curriculum In A New England Middle School, Cheryl Lynn Davis Jan 1999

The Professional Beliefs And The Conditions That Support Integrated Curriculum In A New England Middle School, Cheryl Lynn Davis

Educational Studies Dissertations

Research on the best practices at the middle school level suggests that early adolescent students need an educational environment that is unlike elementary or high school. Young people between the ages of 10 and 14 are experiencing rapid changes in their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. In order to meet these needs, middle school curriculum must provide opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge base, explore areas of interest, and acquire a sense of self as they seek to understand their place within the larger society. An effective way to reach such goals, at the middle level, is through …
