Politicians And The Internet, Melody Kay Gwilliam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The topic for this thesis examines the utilization of senatorial websites by United States Senators as a new communication tool. Three different areas of content will be examined: informational content, interactive content and audio-visual content. Those three areas will be used to examine the differences between Senators in several different ways: gender and race, party affiliation, length of service in the senate, region of the country they represent, urban and rural states, and age of the Senators. The results showed 6 significant findings in the areas of content: Democrats had more informational content; Northern Senators had the best and Midwestern …

Contemporary Romanian Theatre: Artistry, Honesty, And Adaptation In The Plays Of Iosif Naghiu, Dumitru Radu Popescu And Marin Sorescu, Eric Pourchot Jan 1999

Contemporary Romanian Theatre: Artistry, Honesty, And Adaptation In The Plays Of Iosif Naghiu, Dumitru Radu Popescu And Marin Sorescu, Eric Pourchot

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the plays and productions of three contemporary Romanian playwrights—Iosif Naghiu, Dumitru Radu Popescu, and Marin Sorescu—as they reflect the changing cultural policies and climate of Romania from 1968 to 1998. The three case studies demonstrate that, faced with harsh political censorship during the Ceausescu years and economic difficulties since the overthrow of communism in 1989, contemporary Romanian drama and theatre has nevertheless maintained an artistic merit and integrity deserving of wider acknowledgment. Romanian directors are well-known internationally but, paradoxically, the drama of Romania, despite close linguistic connections to Western Europe, has received far less attention than has …

A Multi-Faceted Program To Recruit And Develop African Seventh-Day Adventist Writers, Enock Okari Omosa Jan 1999

A Multi-Faceted Program To Recruit And Develop African Seventh-Day Adventist Writers, Enock Okari Omosa

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Although the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in Kenya has about 500,000 believers, most of the literature read and used by its members was originally written by Christians from the West. This study identifies some of the problems caused by the lack of African Adventist writers producing acceptable African Adventist literature for Adventist members and other Africans in Kenya, and points the way toward positive measures to remedy the situation.

Method

In order to design an appropriate program to recruit and develop African Seventh-day Adventist writers in Kenya, an attempt is made to examine the kind of literature needed and …

A New Evangelistic Paradigm: Using Foundational Theology Issues As An Apologetic Instrument For Evangelism In A Secular World, David E. Thomas Jan 1999

A New Evangelistic Paradigm: Using Foundational Theology Issues As An Apologetic Instrument For Evangelism In A Secular World, David E. Thomas

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Topic. The topic of this project is evangelistic theory. Because of the large-scale secularization of Western society, the evangelistic method that has prevailed for decades is becoming less and less effective. Some adjustment to evangelistic process must be made if it is to remain effective in speaking to thinking, sophisticated modems.

The Purpose. This project was to experiment with evangelistic theory, proposing and testing a new paradigm for speaking to secular people that uses a philosophical strategy.

The Sources. The original source for this project was material presented in a doctoral class. It was augmented with pertinent literature from …

Juergen Habermas And Marx: Critique Of An Incipient Public Sphere, Russell Lee Rockwell Jan 1999

Juergen Habermas And Marx: Critique Of An Incipient Public Sphere, Russell Lee Rockwell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the relationship of Jurgen Habermas's ideas to those of Marx. A close reading of Habermas's major works, in conjunction with a close reading as well of the Marx texts he analyzes, comprises the thematically first part. The Habermas texts include the following, with original German publication dates: "Between Philosophy and Science: Marxism as Critique" (1960); Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere (1962); Knowledge and Human Interests (1968); Legitimation Crisis (1973); "Reconstruction of Historical Materialism" (1975); and, The Theory of Communicative Action (1981). These texts are shown to contain a two decade-long argument that, (a) the relevance of …

Development Of Murine Leukemia Virus-Based Vectors For More Effective Gene Therapy: Genetic Analysis Of Direct Repeat Deletions., Krista Anda Delviks Jan 1999

Development Of Murine Leukemia Virus-Based Vectors For More Effective Gene Therapy: Genetic Analysis Of Direct Repeat Deletions., Krista Anda Delviks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviral vectors containing direct repeats of homologous sequences constitute a powerful in vivo model system to analyze reverse transcriptase (RT) template-switching events. Directly repeated sequences in retroviral genomes are unstable and frequently deleted from the final integrated provirus due to RT's low template affinity and processivity. We developed murine leukemia virus (MLV)-based self-inactivating and self-activating vectors containing 701-bp direct repeats composed of segments of the herpes simplex virus-1 thymidine kinase gene (HTK). After one cycle of retroviral replication, we demonstrated functional reconstitution of the HTK suicide gene at a frequency of 57% when the direct repeats were adjacent to one …

A Christian Approach To Traditional Male Circumcision Customs In Malawi, Harry Godfrey Mtike Jan 1999

A Christian Approach To Traditional Male Circumcision Customs In Malawi, Harry Godfrey Mtike

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Lorn we and Yao tribes in Malawi practice traditional male circumcision rituals which are damaging the Malawian society. While these rituals have value and fill key functions in society, they are at the same time troublesome. The lack of proper medical equipment and training in performing actual circumcision, as well as accompanying teachings which encourage sexual promiscuity, makes these ceremonies physically, spiritually, and morally dangerous. The AIDS epidemic in Malawi can also be partly traced to these rituals. This study seeks to find a Christian answer which preserves the value of these practices while avoiding the problems connected …

Adventist Information Ministry: Historical-Missiological Foundations And An Evaluation Of The Chaplain's Role, Gregory A. Harper

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Purpose

The aim of this dissertation was to: (1) investigate and record historical and missiological foundations of Adventist Information Ministry; (2) survey, analyze, describe, and evaluate perceptions about the AIM chaplain's role and present resulting recommendations; and (3) provide summaries and conclusions for the major topics and methodology revealed in the main body of this report.

An Evangelistic Strategy For Reaching Baby Boomers In Rock Island County, Illinois, Clarence H. Small Jan 1999

An Evangelistic Strategy For Reaching Baby Boomers In Rock Island County, Illinois, Clarence H. Small

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Moline Seventh-day Adventist Church, with a regularly attending membership of approximately 65, has fifteen Baby Boomer members in a county of over 160,000, of whom at least 44,000 are Boomers, with over 30,000 of these being unchurched. This project sought to develop a strategy for attracting Baby Boomers to the Moline church.

Method

A strategy was developed and implemented to attract Baby Boomers to church based upon six valid and transferable principles drawn from existing literature and the successful programs of the Willow Creek and Saddleback churches-and the clearly established legitimacy of targeting specific groups for evangelism. This …

Creative Bible Teaching For Seventh-Day Adventist Youth Ages 13-18, Michael Kwaku Owusu Jan 1999

Creative Bible Teaching For Seventh-Day Adventist Youth Ages 13-18, Michael Kwaku Owusu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Studies regarding how adolescents learn have found that the traditional approach of teaching as information or knowledge to be passed on with an emphasis on the mastery of content is not very effective. In view of this, many Christian educators and youth ministry specialists recommend a shift from the traditional methods of teaching the Bible to creative ways of teaching with a focus on active student participation in the teaching-learning process, and on meaning of Bible truths.

Method

The method used to complete this project was a review of representative literature dealing with theories and concepts of teaching and …

Proyecto De Capacitación Laica Para La Iglesia Local, Hector Solera Jan 1999

Proyecto De Capacitación Laica Para La Iglesia Local, Hector Solera

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Christian Church has the duty of evangelizing all nations. This task requires that all church members participate actively in evangelism. However, not all church members get involved because they do not know how. This research initiated and evaluated a project to train the members of the Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the purpose of enabling them to evangelize the city.

The project was developed in five different seminars during five consecutive weekends. The topics covered were the following: the priesthood of all believers, how to present the gospel in a Christ-centered fashion, the art …

The Courage Of Our Convictions, Sherman J. Clark Jan 1999

The Courage Of Our Convictions, Sherman J. Clark

Michigan Law Review

This article argues that criminal trial juries perform an important but inadequately appreciated social function. I suggest that jury trials serve as a means through which we as a community take responsibility for - own up to - inherently problematic judgments regarding the blameworthiness or culpability of our fellow citizens. This is distinct from saying that jury trials are a method of making judgments about culpability. They are that; but they are also a means through which we confront our own agency in those judgments. The jury is an institution through which we as individuals take a turn acknowledging and …
