Bands Of Localized Electromagnetic Waves In Random Collections Of Dielectric Particles, Marian Rusek, Arkadiusz Orlowski Jan 1999

Bands Of Localized Electromagnetic Waves In Random Collections Of Dielectric Particles, Marian Rusek, Arkadiusz Orlowski

Turkish Journal of Physics

Anderson localization of electromagnetic waves in random arrays of dielectric cylinders is studied. An effective theoretical approach based on the finite size scaling analysis of transmission is developed. The disordered dielectric medium is modeled by a system of randomly distributed 2D electric dipoles. The appearance of the band of localized waves emerging in the limit of an infinite medium is discovered. It suggests deeper insight into existing experimental and theoretical results.

Confined Bipolarons In The Strong Coupling Limit, R. Tuğrul Senger, Ati̇lla Erçelebi̇ Jan 1999

Confined Bipolarons In The Strong Coupling Limit, R. Tuğrul Senger, Ati̇lla Erçelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Physics

Within the framework of the strong-coupling polaron theory and the bulk phonon approximation we report the possibility and criteria in achieving stable bipolaron states in confined media. We use a simple model of two electrons constrained within an anisotropic three dimensional parabolic potential box of tunable barrier slopes. Conforming the confining potential from one geometry to the other, we obtain an explicit tracking of the stability criteria as a function of the degree of confinement uncovering all low dimensional major geometric configurations of common interest.

A Cohort Study To Determine The Epidemiology Of Estuary-Associated Syndrome, Elizabeth Turf, Lily Ingsrisawang, Megan Turf, J.D. Ball, Michael Stutts, John Taylor, Suzanne Jenkins

Virginia Journal of Science

From the Introduction:

Estuary-Associated Syndrome (EAS) is the name given to a potential illness characterized primarily by changes in an individual's cognitive abilities, including acute onset of memory loss or the sudden inability to solve simple problems. Other possible signs of illness include respiratory symptoms, skin rash, or gastrointestinal distress. This illness appears to arise following exposure to toxin produced by Pfiesteria piscicida, or other toxic dinoflagellates, that resides in estuary waters.

….

In order to learn more about this possible syndrome and to determine if a causal relationship exists between association to waters containing Pfiesteria or other toxic …

Elder Abuse: A Need For Awareness, Jill M. Hannagan Jan 1999

Elder Abuse: A Need For Awareness, Jill M. Hannagan

Theses

Abuse of the elderly continues to be amplified as the older population of the United States has increased . Lack of professional awareness within healthcare institutions has put seniors at risk for violence . One problem associated with the identification of elderly abuse has been assaults going unreported or unnoticed for lack of poor assessment and observation skills. Therefore it is incumbent for healthcare institutions to take all steps necessary to better define and identify this serious and growing problem.

Identification Of The Unknown Soldier And The Fight For The Right To Anonymity: The Human Genome Project And Implications Of A National Dna Database, Kelly S. Erbes Jan 1999

Identification Of The Unknown Soldier And The Fight For The Right To Anonymity: The Human Genome Project And Implications Of A National Dna Database, Kelly S. Erbes

Cleveland State Law Review

The focus of this writing is the use of DNA for identification purposes and the issues that arise when genetic traits and/or predisposition to physical or mental conditions are linked to the individual specifically, along with the implications of a national DNA database as a system of identification. It has become the general rule that it is not an unreasonable invasion of privacy to take DNA for the purpose of identifying criminal offenders through a DNA database. This writing will examine the potential for nonconsensual inclusion of nearly everyone into such a system, as well as the ramifications in the …

The Fundamentalist Face Of Secularism And Its Impact On Women's Rights In India, Joseph C. Hostetler-Baker & Hostetler Lecture, Ratna Kapur

Cleveland State Law Review

I am going to talk about three things today: The first is to give you a very brief account of the competing understandings of secularism that have emerged in India. I look at the model of secularism that is being promoted by the Hindu Right and the validation this has received from the electorate, but more importantly, the Supreme Court. Secondly, I will address why the wall of separation does not provide a way out of the crisis of secularism in India and how it has not solved the problem of majoritarianism even in the American context. And finally, how …

Discerning The Invisible In A Group Portrait Of Stability: An Ethnography Of The Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood, Lisa Marie Wheeler

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The purpose of this ethnographic study has been to learn about the sub-culture of the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood: who the people are who live in its geographic boundaries (according to each other) and how they experience and construct their community. Although residents recognize to some degree that their neighborhood is fragmented into smaller areas, most emphasize a sense of belonging to the neighborhood as a geographic whole, taking pride in its reputation for stability, diversity and integration. The "strong sense of community'" and stability that residents often say they enjoy relies on common interests and a shared goal among active residents …

Resolving Conflicting International Data Privacy Rules In Cyberspace, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 1999

Resolving Conflicting International Data Privacy Rules In Cyberspace, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

While core principles for the fair treatment of personal information are common to democracies, privacy rights vary considerably across national borders. This article explores the divergences in approach and substance of data privacy between Europe and the United States. It argues that the specific privacy rules adopted in a country have a governance function. The article shows that national differences support two distinct political choices for the roles in democratic society assigned to the state, the market and the individual: either liberal, market-based governance or socially-protective, rights-based governance. These structural divergences make international cooperation imperative for effective data protection in …

Studies On Mushroom Production In Aquaculture With Tuff And Perlite, Şeref Aksu, Ati̇la Günay

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study perlite, volcanic tuff and peat moss media were investigated for their possible use in mushroom production in aquaculture between 1994-1995. In mushroom feeding studies, 2% sucrose medium was found to be the most suitable solution for mushroom mycelium growth. Among the 6 different media each containing 2% sucrose, the effect of different rates of micro and macro elements were studied and mycelium growth was investigated. The best liquid medium in relation to the highest dry weight of mycelium was the medium labelled No. 1 which consisted of 10^-3 mol/l of macro and 10^-6 mol/l of micro nutrient …

‘‘Going Where The Questions Are’’: Using Media To Maintain Personalized Contact In Reference Service In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Sarah Brick Archer, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Different approaches to reference service have been added over the years, but the basic premise of the service has not changed–the desire to assist and educate users in locating information. As new technologies are added, such as desktop conferencing and web access, it is important that the personalized contact which is the heart of reference service be preserved. The human touch in the reference process is very important to the success of the reference transaction. Media can be useful in assisting reference librarians in ‘‘Going Where the Questions Are’’ while still maintaining the personal element in creating real-time reference transactions …
