Cultivating Hallowed Ground: The Use Of Garden Imagery As A Contemporary Symbol Of The Sacred., Claudia Teresa Giannini
Cultivating Hallowed Ground: The Use Of Garden Imagery As A Contemporary Symbol Of The Sacred., Claudia Teresa Giannini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By engaging in the artistic processes of printmaking and photography, I am attempting to formulate visual images that evoke a sense of connection between human beings and the natural world. This thesis explores the way that I have incorporated ideas from the Deep Ecology movement in literature to create works of art that present a paradigm based on the interconnectedness of all life as opposed to the domination of nature by man. The focus of this examination was my own garden. The use of formal elements such as geometric forms, scale and repetition to convey the sacred aspects of this …

Improvement Of Instruction In Special Education: An Ethnographic Look., Wanda Lee Letendre
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to understand how a special education supervisor, four beginning special education teachers and their building principal experienced improvement of instruction. The study was conducted in four special education classrooms in a county with a school-aged population of approximately 14,000 students. The county was located in a rural, upper Southern state. Data were collected primarily from January through June of 1997. Using qualitative methodology, data were collected by use of participant observation, interviews, and analysis of documents pertinent to improvement of instruction. Field notes, transcripts, and pertinent information from documents were entered into Ethnograph software …

Potential Impacts Of A Major Sport/Tourism Event: The America's Cup 2000, Auckland, New Zealand, Mark B. Orams, Anouska Brons
Potential Impacts Of A Major Sport/Tourism Event: The America's Cup 2000, Auckland, New Zealand, Mark B. Orams, Anouska Brons
Visions in Leisure and Business
The America's Cup is reputed to be the oldest international sporting competition. It has been contested between yachts representing yacht clubs of foreign nations since 1851. Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, successfully challenged for the Cup of San Diego in 1995. In the austral summer of 1999/2000, for only the second time in history, the America's Cup will be hosted by a country other than the United States of America. The hosting of this event presents an enormous challenge for a small isolated nation like New Zealand. A record 18 syndicates have lodged entries for …
Lessons Learned, Lessons Learning: Insights From The Calgary And Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, J. R. Brent Ritchie
Lessons Learned, Lessons Learning: Insights From The Calgary And Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, J. R. Brent Ritchie
Visions in Leisure and Business
The intense competition among destinations to host the Olympic Games (both winter and summer), demonstrates the value that is attached to this type of mega-event. Despite this apparent importance, there is surprisingly little comprehensive research that rigorously assesses the value of the Olympics-particularly in terms of their contribution to long term community and tourism development. In addition, as researchers, we have failed to document the lessons learned from one Olympics Games to the next. The result is that many of the same errors are regularly repeated. This paper seeks to identify the lessons learned as a result of hosting the …
Collision Course: Public Inquiries And Criminal Prosecutions, David T.S. Fraser
Collision Course: Public Inquiries And Criminal Prosecutions, David T.S. Fraser
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Public inquiries have become entrenched as an important part of the Canadian administrative state. Public inquiries are given numerous powers to execute their fact-finding missions-powers that sometimes collide with the rights of individuals. In ordinary criminal investigations, those suspected of having committed offences have the right to remain silent and to refuse to participate in their own conviction. Recent inquiries, most notably the Westray Inquiry, have been charged with investigating tragedies where criminal charges may be appropriate. This has raised important questions regarding the power of inquiries to compel all relevant testimony and "name names" where this may collide with …

Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder
Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
Critics have long argued that alienation is the essence of modern culture. Having long served as a theme in literature that profoundly reflects the changes and challenges of modernity, alienation has, after a hiatus of a few decades, undergone a conceptual resurgence during the 1990’s as recent research in the West indicates a correlation with the phenomenon of postmodernity. With the breakdown of communism in vast parts of the world and the development toward pluralistic societies, the field of human possibilities has expanded considerably and the response thereof demands, therefore, a new definition of alienation. If previously alienation signified the …
Eileen Chang And Cinema, Ou Fan, Leo Lee
Eileen Chang And Cinema, Ou Fan, Leo Lee
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
The death of Eileen Chang on September 8, 1995 in Los Angeles made headlines in all the Chinese newspapers. In the Chinese-speaking areas of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, a veritable cult of mystique has been built around her by both public media and the large number of her fans (who called themselves Chang-mi or "Chang-fans”). However, in the last twenty-three years of her life Chang lived quietly and incognito in Los Angeles, shunning all social contact and escaping publicity by constantly changing her residences in numerous hotels, motels, and small apartment houses until her death in an obscure …

Cross-Border Shopping: Tourism In The Canada-United States Borderlands, Dallen J. Timothy
Cross-Border Shopping: Tourism In The Canada-United States Borderlands, Dallen J. Timothy
Visions in Leisure and Business
This research note examines the phenomenon of cross-border shopping between the United States and Canada as a form of borderlands tourism. This activity has always existed in the region and has traditionally been characterized by high but consistent numbers of Canada-to-US flows and lower but consistent numbers of US-to-Canada flows. However, in 1997, owing to an increase in value of the Canadian dollar and other economic variables, the number of Canadian shopping trips to the United States increased dramatically until 1992, when the value of the Canadian dollar began to fall. This in tum has led to the rapid increase …
Variability Of Tourist Attraction On An International Boundary: Sonora, Mexico Border Towns, Daniel D. Arreola, Kenneth Madsen
Variability Of Tourist Attraction On An International Boundary: Sonora, Mexico Border Towns, Daniel D. Arreola, Kenneth Madsen
Visions in Leisure and Business
This paper explores how and why tourism and tourist districts in border towns vary along a single international boundary. A perception about Mexican border tourism holds that the boundary itself is the primary stimulus to development. While almost every Mexican border town has some tourist function, the nature and extent of that activity will vary with a host of exogenous factors. We argue that Mexican border city tourism is largely a function of these diverse external factors more than simply a presence on the international boundary. Successful tourism in the Mexican border cities is linked to historic advantage and age …
Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo
Cross-Border Trips By Canadians And Americans And The Differential Impact Of The Border, Livio Di Matteo
Visions in Leisure and Business
Same day automobile trips have been used as a barometer of cross-border shopping between Canada and the United States. The determinants of same day automobile crossborder trips by Canadians and Americans are examined using regression analysis and the results find that key determinants are lagged trips, per capita income, the real exchange rate and seasonal factors. The coefficient on lagged trips is larger for Canada than for the United States suggesting that, over time, Canadians adjust more rapidly to the desired number of trips than Americans. More intriguing is the fact that while income is positive for Canadian same day …

Host Residents' Support Of The Summer 1996 Olympic Games, Joel L. Frater, Brian Mihalik
Host Residents' Support Of The Summer 1996 Olympic Games, Joel L. Frater, Brian Mihalik
Visions in Leisure and Business
Hallmark or mega-events have been widely hailed as opportunities to enhance the awareness and appeal of tourist destinations. Because hallmark or mega events such as the Olympic games hold the market potential for national and international tourism development, studies of host residents' support of the Olympic games hold special significance. The purpose of this study was to examine Atlanta, residents on their perceptions of the State of Georgia hosting the 1996 Olympic games. Pre and post Olympic comparisons of residents showed strong support for Georgia hosting the Olympic games, limited change is willingness to attend Olympic events, and statistically significant …
Using Multi-Method Assessment To Evaluate A Media Enhanced Classroom, Daniel D. Mclean, Deborah Smith, Julie S. Knapp
Using Multi-Method Assessment To Evaluate A Media Enhanced Classroom, Daniel D. Mclean, Deborah Smith, Julie S. Knapp
Visions in Leisure and Business
This paper looks at the process of assessment of a media-enhanced classroom experience. It utilizes an assessment model based on Rathbun and Goodrum (8) that suggests multi-methods of data collection. The use of triangulation (3) to answer a research question fits into the proposed multi-method design. The Living Textbook was developed to support a senior level management class in a Recreation and Park Administration program. The instructor identified four instructional goals of the multi-media program: Triangulation techniques included group observations, individual student observations, data based and open ended surveys, and debriefing of instructors. The results suggested that usability/accessibility were essential …

31P NMR experiments were performed on Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis at various temperatures under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The total soluble intracellular phosphate concentration was estimated to be 2 x 10^-17 mole/cell, while intracellular orthophosphate concentration was around 1 x 10^-17 mole/cell. Addition of glucose resulted in a general decrease in intracellular pH and was accompanied by the formation of sugar monophosphates. The concentrations of soluble intracellular phosphates, both inorganic and organic phosphates, were estimated by integration versus methylene diphosphonic acid (MDPA) standard. Although intracellular and extracellular orthophosphate could be observed, these appear to exchange rapidly on the NMR …
