From Novel To Film: The Remains Of The Day And The Art Of Adaptation, Shirley S. Richardson Jan 1999

From Novel To Film: The Remains Of The Day And The Art Of Adaptation, Shirley S. Richardson

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Both novelist and film-maker have stories to tell and both create a vision of their stories for their readers and viewers, one with words on a page, the other with pictures and spoken dialogue. A novel's descriptive passages may be very detailed or leave the reader with large visual gaps, whereas each frame of the film fills the viewer's vision with scrupulously attended images, from the props to the setting to the costumes to every gesture and expression of the actor. A novel allows the reader to pause, ponder, reread, and detect subtleties; a film takes the viewer by the …

Enhanced Dna Repair Of Serratia Marcescens, S. Typhimurium, And Saccharomyces Cerevisiae By Evening Primrose (Oenothera Spp.) Oil, Amanda Lynn Rahe Jan 1999

Enhanced Dna Repair Of Serratia Marcescens, S. Typhimurium, And Saccharomyces Cerevisiae By Evening Primrose (Oenothera Spp.) Oil, Amanda Lynn Rahe

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Evening Primrose oil (EPO) is a suspected anticarcinogen, however, little is known about its method of stopping and/or slowing tumor growth. The present research used S. marcescens, S. typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Staphlyococcus aureus, and S. cerevisiae as cellular models to investigate the antimutagenic properties of EPO. Ultraviolet radiation was used as a mutagen. Each organism was screened for mutations at various lengths of UV light exposure and plated on appropriate media. One period of UV exposure that represented 10% population kill was chosen for each organism, and the organism was once again exposed to UV light …

A Post-Hoc Analysis Of The Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal: Application Of Psychological Theories Of Attitude To Elucidate The Responses Of The Public, Media, And Political Parties, Sara Ann Rademacher Jan 1999

A Post-Hoc Analysis Of The Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal: Application Of Psychological Theories Of Attitude To Elucidate The Responses Of The Public, Media, And Political Parties, Sara Ann Rademacher

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Various social psychological theories of attitude, persuasion and cognition are applied to provide post hoc explanations of the attitudes held by various participants such as the media, the public, and both political parties towards Clinton's alleged inappropriate/ illegal actions with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Specifically, the opinions of each group are monitored and analyzed according to Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance, the Elaboration-Likelihood Model, William Perry's theory of cognitive development, Don Byrne's theory of attitude and attraction, and Irving Janis's theory of the effects of fear arousal on attitude change.

Storytelling: Artist's Books, Nancy Jo Ann Steele Jan 1999

Storytelling: Artist's Books, Nancy Jo Ann Steele

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My thesis exhibition presents mixed media artist's books inspired by autobiographical stOlies originating from my family. These stories relate to the lives of my family and the natural environment of my home in a small-town farming community with deep Appalachian roots. With a sense of humor and solemnity, I make artist's books about the events and stories related to our religion, work, animals, neighbors, land and superstitions .

I mournfully watch the slow disintegration of our way of life. Vital aspects of our lives, such as working on the farm as a family, speaking with an accent, and making much …

Negotiating New Asian American Masculinities: Attitudes And Gender Expectations, Peter Chua, Diane Fujino Jan 1999

Negotiating New Asian American Masculinities: Attitudes And Gender Expectations, Peter Chua, Diane Fujino

Faculty Publications, Sociology

The article examines how Asian-American men construct their own masculinities. Changes in Asian-American heterosexual masculinity are of great interest within the Asia-American communities and to the general public. Historically this racialized masculinity was both hypermasculanized and desexualized as a way to limit economic and racial opportunities in the U.S. While these dichotomous ideas about Asian-American masculinities are still pervasive new articulations of what it means to be male, straight, and Asian American are affecting different Asian-American communities and interpersonal relationships at home and in workplaces. Issues of Asian- American masculinities are brought up in relation to interracial dating and marriage, …

Yeast And Human Frataxin Are Processed To Mature Form In Two Sequential Steps By The Mitochondrial Processing Peptidase, Steven S. Branda, Patrizia Cavadini, Jiri Adamec, Frantisek Kalousek, Franco Taroni, Grazia Isaya Jan 1999

Yeast And Human Frataxin Are Processed To Mature Form In Two Sequential Steps By The Mitochondrial Processing Peptidase, Steven S. Branda, Patrizia Cavadini, Jiri Adamec, Frantisek Kalousek, Franco Taroni, Grazia Isaya

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Frataxin is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein which is deficient in Friedreich’s ataxia, a hereditary neurodegenerative disease. Yeast mutants lacking the yeast frataxin homologue (Yfh1p) show iron accumulation in mitochondria and increased sensitivity to oxidative stress, suggesting that frataxin plays a critical role in mitochondrial iron homeostasis and free radical toxicity. Both Yfh1p and frataxin are synthesized as larger precursor molecules that, upon import into mitochondria, are subject to two proteolytic cleavages, yielding an intermediate and a mature size form. A recent study found that recombinant rat mitochondrial processing peptidase (MPP) cleaves the mouse frataxin precursor to the intermediate but not …

Fabrication Of Protein Arrays Using Electron Beam Lithography, Duy-Bao Phan Dinh Jan 1999

Fabrication Of Protein Arrays Using Electron Beam Lithography, Duy-Bao Phan Dinh

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Very few electron beam based methods for producing high-resolution patterns of surface bound proteins on glass have been developed.

There are only two types of end groups at the surface of glass, they are silanol and siloxane groups. An estersil layer can be formed on the surface of glass by treatment with hot alcohol creating a hydrophobic layer. The reaction is depicted as follows.

-Si-OH + HOR -SiO-R +H2O R = alkyl chain

The proposal that protein arrays could be fabricated by patterned electron bombardment using estersils as a negative resist was tested in this research. The hydrophobic estersil layer …

The Role Of Community In Two Novels By Barbara Kingsolver, Rebecca K. Calwell Jan 1999

The Role Of Community In Two Novels By Barbara Kingsolver, Rebecca K. Calwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Throughout her career, contemporary writer Barbara Kingsolver has written novels that appeal to both readers and critics. Beginning with The Bean Trees in 1988, through Poisonwood Bible in 1998, Kingsolver established herself as a rising star among contemporary writers. In a review of one of the Kingsolver’s books, one critic said, “It seems there is nothing she can’t do” (Smith 3).

Kingsolver sets herself apart from many of her peers in both her style and her themes. Raised in Kentucky, but now living in Arizona, she has a gift for storytelling. Her dialogue is strong, especially in its ability to …
