An Analysis Of Opportunities For Middle And High School Principals To Develop Public Speaking Skills For Effective Educational Leadership, Doris Stahl Agnon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Recognized leadership skills generally include communication skills and public speaking ability. Some children develop leadership and public speaking skills early in life. Some high schools and colleges emphasize public speaking. Adults frequently enroll in seminars such as Dale Carnegie programs or join organizations such as Toastmasters International. The researcher's own years of teaching and speaking experience have led her to believe in the potential value of public speaking for children, adults, and leaders in education organizations. Principals must speak competently and professionally. The purpose of this study was to determine how and when secondary school principals learned public speaking skills. …

Application Of Canal Locations Within Grid Cells To The Study Of Surface Water-Groundwater Interaction, Robert Joseph Sosnowski Jan 1999

Application Of Canal Locations Within Grid Cells To The Study Of Surface Water-Groundwater Interaction, Robert Joseph Sosnowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Within St. Lucie County, Florida, a network of canals has been cut to provide flood protection, drainage, and irrigation. Many of these canals maintain a permanent to semi-permanent hydraulic connection with the surficial aquifer. MODFLOW code was used to simulate St. Lucie County groundwater levels. One of stresses that contributed to the solution of the groundwater levels, was the volume of water that flowed into or out of the aquifer through the canal system. In MODFLOW, the flow calculation between a canal and the aquifer is independent of the canal's location within the grid cell. The flow calculation was modified …

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang Jan 1999

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Communication is a key element of all business activities during any crisis situation. A company without a crisis management plan can suffer serious difficulties during and after a crisis. A good crisis communication plan cannot solve a crisis, but it can reduce the damage including helping to maintain a positive corporate identity and keeping the normal operation of a company. Four themes (caring, responsibility, honesty, and quick response) relative to crisis communication were examined in the 1987 and 1982 coverage of the Honda Water-Logged Car Crisis and the Tylenol Capsule Poisonings respectively. An investigation of these themes suggests how the …

Data Protection And Management Solutions To Desktop Clients: Integration With Enterprise Tools, Venkatachalam S. Jayavarapu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Today's Personal Computers (PC) do more work and hence hold more important and meaningful data than before. This demands the necessity of better PC data protection services. In this concern we surveyed three major PC data protection tools, namely, Seagate Corporation's Client-Exec, Computer Associates Cheyenne Backup, Xpoint Technologies Uptime and analyzed them in terms of Restore Time and Total Cost of Ownership. Though these standalone tools are good in terms of PC data protection, IT managers still prefer Enterprise tools because they offer better services in terms of usability, manageability and platform independency. Combining the two tools will benefit each …

Cytokinetic Effects Of Platinum (Ii) Polyamines On Three Different Cell Lines Using Flow Cytometry, Claire E. Fitch Jan 1999

Cytokinetic Effects Of Platinum (Ii) Polyamines On Three Different Cell Lines Using Flow Cytometry, Claire E. Fitch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The association between cytotoxicity and cell cycle perturbation caused by cisplatin and two platinum (II) polyamines, containing a methotrexate or a 2-chloro-p-phenylenediamine component, was investigated in human ovarian carcinoma cells (CAOV3), murine Balb 3T3 fibroblasts and Chinese ovarian hamster cells by flow cytometric DNA/protein, DNA/RNA and DNA degradation assays. Continuous in vitro drug exposure caused a time- and dose-dependent suppression of growth. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a multiplicity of cytokinetic perturbations, the most important of which was Go/G1 depletion and S phase arrest. The latter correlated with inhibition of DNA synthesis and subsequent inhibition of RNA and protein synthesis. Prolonged …

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska Jan 1999

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Research and a review of the related literature indicate that the United States defense industry has had a long history of unethical and illegal business practices. Recent polls find that most Americans believe that their nation's weapon acquisition system is one of the worst managed activities in the public or private sectors. The perception of our government as well as the general public is that the defense industry is neither efficient nor honestly managed. Although the defense acquisition process has been the subject of many reform efforts, it is reasonable to ask whether these reform efforts have had any success. …

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examined the relationship between ethnicity and parents' compliance with immunizations of their children. Recent studies have shown that compliance rates for immunizations of children who were two years of age were below the standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics due to both health system barriers and family/child barriers. A survey of pediatric patients was conducted utilizing a convenience sample of 66 parents of children between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight months. The subjects were interviewed to determine factors affecting immunization compliance, including cultural factors consistent with the theoretical framework of Madeline Leininger. The statistical analysis …

In Memoriam: Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr.—A Tribute, Kenneth F. Ripple Jan 1999

In Memoriam: Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr.—A Tribute, Kenneth F. Ripple

Journal Articles

In remembering Justice Powell, my memory invariably recalls three distinct images from the years I spent at the Supreme Court. Two of these memories are from my own work with him. The other is from my observation of him on the bench. In the days since his death this past autumn, all three have sparked a great deal of reflection about his enduring contribution to our jurisprudence and to our profession.

"Private" Environmental Regulation, Human Rights, And Community, Errol E. Meidinger Jan 1999

"Private" Environmental Regulation, Human Rights, And Community, Errol E. Meidinger

Journal Articles

Private organizations have recently established numerous programs aimed at improving the environmental performance of industry. Many of the new programs seek to define and enforce standards for environmental management, and to make it difficult for producers not to participate in them. They claim, explicitly and implicitly, to promote the public interest. They take on functions generally performed by government regulatory programs, and may change or even displace government programs. Private programs thus have the potential to significantly reshape domestic and international policy institutions.

This paper describes three major private environmental regulatory programs applicable to forestry and discusses their implications for …

Arbitration And Beyond: Avoiding Pitfalls In Drafting Dispute Resolution Clauses In Employment Contracts, Nancy A. Welsh

Faculty Scholarship

Article Extract:

You've just helped a mid-sized company, Allwell Corp., to reach a settlement in an action brought by a disgruntled former employee. The CEO turns to you and says, "Even though I still believe that we didn't do anything wrong, I'm glad this lawsuit is over. I can't believe how much money and time we've wasted in defending ourselves. Now, how can we keep this from happening in the future? I've been reading about companies putting arbitration clauses in all kinds of contracts. I want to know whether we can require our employees to arbitrate and maybe even require …

Physical And Technical Bases Of Using Ferromagnetic Resonance In Hexagonal Ferrites For Electromagnetic Compatibility Problems, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency-selective measurement of microwave signal parameters based on application of gyromagnetic converters has proven advantageous for the research of microwave radiation over a wide spectrum (several octaves) in multisignal regime in microwave path and for the solution of a number of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. The measurement frequency band can be enlarged to millimeter-waves with application of monocrystal hexagonal ferrite resonators (HFR) having high internal magnetic fields. Millimeter-wave field interactions with the HFR having alternating resonance frequency are analyzed. This is useful for millimeter-wave signal modulation and demodulation. The analysis is based on the solution of magnetization vector motion equation …

Guarding The Gate To The Courthouse: How Trial Judges Are Using Their Evidentiary Screening Role To Remake Tort Causation Rules, Lucinda M. Finley

Journal Articles

The article looks at what trial judges are actually doing in toxic tort cases in the post-Daubert world; it reviews and critiques cases in which judges have in effect adopted a new rule of causation law that requires plaintiffs to rely on epidemiology, and in particular epidemiology that demonostrates an increase in relative risk of 2.0 or greater; the article considers the substantive as well as the normative implications of this legal treatment of epidemiology.

Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley Jan 1999

Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley

Journal Articles

Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling" is best remembered for its moral, "To be born in a duck's nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan's egg." Having read and thought about this story many times, we should like to suggest another, less heart-warming, interpretation. The story of the Ugly Duckling, that most resilient of cygnets, masks the tragedy of children who suffer abuse. Its message, that personal spirit will triumph when a child grows up, misrepresents the experience of many victimized children. If we wait for the child to …
