Nitrogen Utilization In Creeping Bentgrass, Y. Kuo, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner Jan 1999

Nitrogen Utilization In Creeping Bentgrass, Y. Kuo, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

N utilization, including plant dry weight (DW) production, total N and nitrate N (NO3-N) content accumulation, N utilization efficiency (NUE), root absorption efficiency (RAE), reduced N accumulation, and nitrate assimilation capacity (NAC) were determined for creeping bentgrass cultivars grown in hydroponic culture. Possible mechanisms affecting N utilization including nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and root morphology were also examined. Four cultivars, selected from an initial screening of creeping bentgrasses were grown under both low and high levels of N in a flowing solution culture system. The relationship between NUE and plant growth for two different creeping bentgrass cultivars was …

Tryptophan Catabolism By Lactobacillus Casei Andlactobacillus Helveticus Cheese Flavor Adjuncts, S. Gummalla, Jeff Broadbent Jan 1999

Tryptophan Catabolism By Lactobacillus Casei Andlactobacillus Helveticus Cheese Flavor Adjuncts, S. Gummalla, Jeff Broadbent

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Microbial degradation of Trp is thought to promote the formation of aromatic compounds that impart putrid, fecal, or unclean flavors in cheese, but pathways for their production have not been established. This study investigated Trp catabolism by Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus helveticus cheese flavor adjuncts under carbohydrate starvation (pH 6.5, 30 or 37°C, no sugar) and near cheese-ripening (pH 5.2, 4% NaCl, 15°C, no sugar) conditions. Enzyme assays of cell-free extracts indicated that both species of Lactobacillus catabolized Trp to indole-3-lactic acid, and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography of culture supernatants showed this reaction occurred via successive transamination and dehydrogenation reactions. …

Effects Of Altering Freshwater Chemistry On Physiological Responses Of Rainbow Trout To Silver Exposure, Nicolas R. Bury, James C. Mcgeer, Chris M. Wood Jan 1999

Effects Of Altering Freshwater Chemistry On Physiological Responses Of Rainbow Trout To Silver Exposure, Nicolas R. Bury, James C. Mcgeer, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

The influence of different water Cl- (50–600 μM), Ca2+ (50–1,500 μM), Na+ (50–1,500 μM), or dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 0.31–5 mg/L) levels on silver-induced physiological and biochemical perturbations of rainbow trout were investigated. Fish were acclimated to soft water (50 μM; Cl-, Ca2+, and Na+), then exposed to 3.7 μg/L Ag (as AgNO3) for 6 h, which resulted in a reduction in Na+ influx from the water, an inhibition of gill sodium- and potassium-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+-ATPase) activity, and an accumulation of silver on …

Image Analysis And The Effect Of Molecular Orientation On Degrading Lactide Polymer Films, K. J. L. Burg, M. Laberge, D. L. Powers, S. W. Shalaby Jan 1999

Image Analysis And The Effect Of Molecular Orientation On Degrading Lactide Polymer Films, K. J. L. Burg, M. Laberge, D. L. Powers, S. W. Shalaby

Cells and Materials

Absorbable polylactide films were studied in order to observe the effect of orientation on the resulting hydrolytic degradation pattern. Two types of polylactide films with two levels of molecular orientation were studied, during a nine month exposure to a phosphate buffered solution at 37°C. The films were sectioned and quantified as to void area, birefringence area, and intensity of birefringence using a microscope and an image analysis software package. The results, obtained using an analysis of variance, showed that the orientation played a significant role in the degradation pattern of the polylactide films, either decreasing or causing no change in …

Biomimetic Habitats For Cells: Ordered Matrix Deposition And Differentiation In Gingival Fibroblasts Cultured On Hydroxyapatite Coated With A Collagen Analogue, Rajendra S. Bhatnagar, Jing Jing Qian, Anna Wedrychowska, Eric Dixon, Nancy Smith Jan 1999

Biomimetic Habitats For Cells: Ordered Matrix Deposition And Differentiation In Gingival Fibroblasts Cultured On Hydroxyapatite Coated With A Collagen Analogue, Rajendra S. Bhatnagar, Jing Jing Qian, Anna Wedrychowska, Eric Dixon, Nancy Smith

Cells and Materials

In tissues, cells attach and migrate on collagen. Interaction with collagen modulates cell proliferation and differentiation. We propose that similar environments may be constructed by immobilizing collagen-derived cell-binding peptides in a three-dimensional (3-D) template. We identified a cell binding domain of type I collagen and showed that a 15-residue synthetic analogue (P-15) binds cells with high affinity. In the present study, we compared the behavior of human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) in culture on hydroxyapatite (HA) and on HA-P-15. HGF cultured on HA formed sparse monolayers with little order and deposited a scant matrix. HGF on HA-P-15 formed highly oriented 3-D …

The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo Jan 1999

The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo

Graduate Research Papers

Art is being used more and more by counselors working with children, particularly within the school setting because it allows for children to communicate nonverbally in a timely manner. "Art therapy in a school setting can offer children the opportunity to work through obstacles that are impeding their educational progress. It can facilitate appropriate social behaviors and promote healthy affective development" (Bush, 1997, p. 16).

The purpose of this paper is to explore how art is used in counseling children and examine specific techniques. Also, the author will focus on the stages of artistic development of children, the use of …

Effect Of Atmospheric Co2 Enrichment On Root Growth And Carbohydrate Allocation Of Phaseolus Spp., Katrina J. Salsman, Dean N. Jordan, S. D. Smith, D. S. Neuman

Life Sciences Faculty Research

A glasshouse experiment was conducted with plants of Phaseolus grown in liquid culture. Root growth parameters (biomass, diameter, length, growth rate, zone of cell division), root rheological components (wall extensibility, water potential yield threshold, water potential), shoot growth, carbon allocation, and abscisic acid (ABA) concentration were measured in Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray at ambient (550 μmol mol−1) and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations. For contrast, measurements of above‐ and belowground growth were conducted on Phaseolus vulgaris L. in the same treatments. Under nonlimiting conditions of water and nutrients, elevated CO2 increased root and shoot growth of P. acutifolius …

Contracting Mediation: The Impact Of Different Statutory Regimes, Ellen J. Dannin Jan 1999

Contracting Mediation: The Impact Of Different Statutory Regimes, Ellen J. Dannin

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

The United States is commited to increasing institutionalized use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), most often based on the claim that it is superior to and different from traditional litigation. Mediation in particular is supposed in the popular view to be user-friendly, nonadversarial, and conducive to optimal, wholistic resolutions. Litigation, in contrast, is supposed to be slow, costly to all, impersonal, formal, legalistic, and incapable of giving complete or satisfactory resolutions. This implicitly assumes that ADR and litigation are discrete processes, each with uniform and intrinsic natures. This, in turn suggests an assumption that they retain these qualities under all …

Dissociative Identity Disorder : Features, Etiology, And Treatment, Gretchen Elizabeth Honsell Jan 1999

Dissociative Identity Disorder : Features, Etiology, And Treatment, Gretchen Elizabeth Honsell

Graduate Research Papers

Dissociative Identity Disorder appears to be diagnosed more frequently in the current clinical arena. This may be connected to increased awareness of how people respond and cope with traumatic events, both singular and prolonged or serial. This increase in diagnoses may also correspond with new associations between childhood abuse and trauma, as well as research into how trauma is coded in memory.

Dissociation can be viewed as a natural phenomena that, when overly utilized as a defense against trauma and its impact, may develop in some persons into DID. Treatment of DID tends to progress through four phases: initial, middle, …
