Preserving The History Of Boston's Diversity, Nancy Richard, Joan D. Krizack Jan 1999

Preserving The History Of Boston's Diversity, Nancy Richard, Joan D. Krizack

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

These headlines appeared in Boston newspapers. The articles they introduce tell each story from the journalist's point of view. Mainstream institutions involved in the events-the courts, law enforcement, schools, and businesses--created records that provide additional information from a mainstream point of view. Often these sources are the only documentation preserved in archives and libraries that are available to researchers. Individuals from the communities involved generally pass on their perspectives on the events by word of mouth. Occasionally, members of the community or the individuals who were present create oral or written sources in which to preserve their story. Unless mainstream …

Behavior Of Melanoma Cells In Cell And Organ Cultures: Use Of Biomaterials To Activate Cells, J. L. Duval, N. Faucheux, R. Warocquier-Clérout, M. D. Nagel Jan 1999

Behavior Of Melanoma Cells In Cell And Organ Cultures: Use Of Biomaterials To Activate Cells, J. L. Duval, N. Faucheux, R. Warocquier-Clérout, M. D. Nagel

Cells and Materials

It is well known that cell behaviors such as adhesion, proliferation and various synthesis are initiated from transmembrane signals. This study uses biomaterials as primary messengers of the cell activation pathways, and we have analyzed the effects of two biomaterials on highly metastatic tumor cells. B16F10 melanoma cells formed heterogeneous populations whose size varied with cell differentiation. In long-term organ cultures grown comparatively on AN 69 and Cuprophan (a biomembrane known to activate cells), we found that Cuprophan increased both adhesion and proliferation of small melanin-rich cells which represented differentiated melanocyte&. In dissociated cell cultures, the rate of early cell …

In Vitro Comparative Biocompatibility Testing Of Carbofilm Coated And Uncoated Polyetherimide For Cardiovascular Application, M. Bosetti, S. Mazzarelli, L. Nicolais, L. Ambrosio, M. Cannas Jan 1999

In Vitro Comparative Biocompatibility Testing Of Carbofilm Coated And Uncoated Polyetherimide For Cardiovascular Application, M. Bosetti, S. Mazzarelli, L. Nicolais, L. Ambrosio, M. Cannas

Cells and Materials

When blood contacts the surface of a material, several processes take place including the activation of coagulation and immune systems. The aim of this work is to study in vitro the biological reactions seen from the point of view of hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of a new polymer suggested as an artificial surface for cardiovascular applications: Carbofilm® coated polyetherimide (C®PEI) in comparison to polyetherimide (PEI), the uncoated form. PEI and C®PEI showed no signs of acute cytotoxicity although following long term incubation with PEI cytotoxicity was somewhat increased; both materials supported good endothelial cell adhesion with a higher level of cell …

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson Jan 1999

The Design And Development Of A Model Program That Integrates Arts, Social Studies And The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements For The Seventh Grade Students And Manson Secondary School, Kenneth L. Nelson

All Graduate Projects

Relatively little research was encountered which attempted to measure the effectiveness of an integrated curriculum over a more traditional course of studies. The results that were articulated seemed to indicate that students in classrooms using an integrated curriculum approach did as well or better than students experiencing a more traditional approach. This was especially true in the area of conceptual understanding. The purpose of this project was to design and develop a model program that integrated Language Arts, Social Studies and the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements for the seventh grade students at Manson Secondary School.

Evaluation Of Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Peppers, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt Jan 1999

Evaluation Of Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Peppers, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This paper is a summary of two farms that utilized the California Energy Commission's low-interest loan program to facilitate their entry into drip irrigation. One farm is located near Oxnard, California, USA and the other is located near Gilroy, California, USA. Both of these growers farm about 162 hectares (400 acres) in their overall operations and used the loans to purchase subsurface drip irrigation systems for Peppers. Over $4 million in low-interest loans have been made available to California growers from the California Energy Commission (CEC) since 1986. The CEC initiated the loan program for growers to help implement energy …

Ethnoquest: An Interactive Multimedia Simulation For Cultural Anthropology Fieldwork, Carey Brunner Van Loon, Frances Berdan, Edward A. Stark

Theses Digitization Project

EthnoQuest, an interactive multimedia CD-ROM simulating a visit to a fictional village named Amopan, was conceived as an adjunct to college-level classroom instruction in introductory anthropology courses. Since these classes typically involve large numbers of students, the logistics on conducting actual fieldwork pose serious problems for instructors and students alike. The conception of an engaging, interactive, accessible learning tool that incorporates appropriate pedagogical principles has found its ultimate expression in EthnoQuest.

Review Of The 1998/1999 Wenatchee Masters With Certification Teacher Preparation Program, William Patrick Fillman, John Morton Tuttle

All Graduate Projects

The Wenatchee Master of Education Certification Teacher Preparation (WMECTPP) was an intensive year long field and performance-based program designed to enable its participants to become modem educators with mastery level competence. The purpose of this study was to document the efficacy from a participant/observer perspective, and to create a blueprint for others interested in a similar program. The ethnographic study of the 1998/99 WMECTPP was performed by two program participants. The authors analyzed and described the philosophical foundation, structure, candidate pool, and completion requirements of the WMECTPP. Authors concluded, based on an extensive review ofrelated literature, that the WMECTPP was …

Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency Of Creeping Bentgrass Genotypes, Y. Kuo, David J. Wehner, T. W. Fermanian, John M. Swiader Jan 1999

Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency Of Creeping Bentgrass Genotypes, Y. Kuo, David J. Wehner, T. W. Fermanian, John M. Swiader

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

A greenhouse study was conducted in a hydroponic system to determine the nitrogen (N) utilization efficiency (NUE) of 14 creeping bentgrass cultivars. There were significant differences among cultivars in plant tissue dry weight, tissue N content, root absorption efficiency (RAE), and NUE. Considering all plant tissue (whole plant), 'Penncross' accumulated the highest N accompanied with the highest whole plant dry weight (WPDW), while 'Allure' accumulated the lowest total Nand WPDW than all the other cultivars. The proportion of WPDW and total N partitioned to shoots was higher than partitioned to roots in each cultivar. On a whole plant basis, 'Regent' …
