How The Public Views The State Courts A 1999 National Survey, Frank A. Bennack Jr. Jan 1999

How The Public Views The State Courts A 1999 National Survey, Frank A. Bennack Jr.

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The survey covered four broad areas: access to the courts, timeliness of court decisions, fairness of judicial decision-making, independence and responsiveness of the courts to the public and to changing conditions in society.

The questions came at the issues from many angles, but when all the figures were totaled and all the comments considered, the courts came out just okay on average.

This conclusion is a mix of high, medium and low marks across different categories. Sometimes there was broad consensus and other times views differed widely by race, ethnic group, income and other factors.

Will Coaching Improve One's Math Score On The Scholastic Aptitude Test?, Judith B. Moore Jan 1999

Will Coaching Improve One's Math Score On The Scholastic Aptitude Test?, Judith B. Moore

The Corinthian

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) has long been a determining factor for admission into most of the nation's colleges and universities. Numerous studies have been conducted to question the reliability and predictive validity of SAT scores, yet they are still widely used. The widespread use of these scores in determining college admission is an indication that the SAT will be around for quite some time. For this reason and for personal reasons, I posed the following research question: "Will coaching improve one's math score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test?"

Sexual Misconduct Of Educators: A Comparison Of Decisions Of Courts And Tribunals In British Columbia, Nova Scotia And Ontario, Barbara J. Murray Jan 1999

Sexual Misconduct Of Educators: A Comparison Of Decisions Of Courts And Tribunals In British Columbia, Nova Scotia And Ontario, Barbara J. Murray

LLM Theses

This thesis examines the genesis of society's awareness of the problem of child sexual abuse as well as changes in the legal system to the prosecution of child sexual offence cases and then situates the problem within the educational system in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Ontario. Thereafter, there is an examination of the panoply of remedies that the legal system provides to victims of sexual misconduct by educators. Conversely, it also analyses whether it is fair that educators who engage in such conduct should be faced with a multiplicity of proceedings before many different institutions. Further, the efficacy of …

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden Jan 1999

Some Keys To The Nba Lockout, Grant M. Hayden

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

The 1998-99 NBA lockout, like the 1994 Major League Baseball strike, may have serious consequences for the future of the game. Already, the abbreviated training camps and compressed schedules have produced a spate of injuries and scores of ugly, low-scoring games. And the effects of the dispute on the game over the long run may be more difficult, if not impossible, to predict. But those questions are best left to those who track television ratings and ticket office receipts. The more immediate question-the one put to me by the editors of this journal-is what the lockout contributed to labor law …

Grand County Target Industry Study Final Report, Eric L. Christensen, Deevon Bailey, Marion T. Bailey, Marion T. Bentley, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

A target industry study was completed for Grand County, Utah (Moab). The results of this study are based on business and consumer surveys in the Grand County area. An input/output model estimated economic multipliers for different industries in Grand County. The principal findings of the study suggest that a majority of businesses in the area are planning to expand in the next five years but that finding skilled labor is a significant bottleneck to development. Both businessowners and residents of Grand County are concerned about maintaining the scenic beauty of the area. Suggestions for improving Grand County's competitive position with …
