Cultural Sensitivity Of Novice And Experienced Teachers Of English To Speakers Of Other Languages, Gregory Charles Belli Jan 1999

Cultural Sensitivity Of Novice And Experienced Teachers Of English To Speakers Of Other Languages, Gregory Charles Belli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this survey study was to measure and compare the levels of cultural sensitivity of novice and experienced teachers of ESOL in the public schools of Palm Beach County, Florida, as measured by Margaret L. Ford's Teacher-Student Interaction Instrument (TSI). Correlational statistics (t-tests, ANOVA's, crosstabulations, c2 significance tests, and multiple regression analysis) were used to determine: (1) if novice and experienced ESOL teachers were distributed differently along Banks' levels of ethnicity, as measured by the TSI, (2) whether four demographic variables (age, gender, regional tenure, and ethnic group identification) were significantly correlated to TSI scores, and (3) if …

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska Jan 1999

Defense Acquisition And Self-Governed Compliance Programs: An Evaluation Of The Defense Industry Initiative On Business Ethics And Conduct, Kenneth Kern Penska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Research and a review of the related literature indicate that the United States defense industry has had a long history of unethical and illegal business practices. Recent polls find that most Americans believe that their nation's weapon acquisition system is one of the worst managed activities in the public or private sectors. The perception of our government as well as the general public is that the defense industry is neither efficient nor honestly managed. Although the defense acquisition process has been the subject of many reform efforts, it is reasonable to ask whether these reform efforts have had any success. …

Evaluation Of Usage Scenarios In Mobile People Architecture, Hongtao. Shang Jan 1999

Evaluation Of Usage Scenarios In Mobile People Architecture, Hongtao. Shang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

With the explosive growth of the Internet and other types of networks, such as cell phones and pager networks, more and more people expect to communicate with each other personally anywhere and at anytime. This thesis studies a new architecture Mobile People Architecture (MPA) proposed by MosquitoNet research group at Stanford University, which is designed to put people, rather than the devices that people use, at the endpoints of communication session. Three usage scenarios in MPA are simulated using SES/Workbench. The Response Time and the Update Cost are used to evaluate the performance of above scenarios. The advantages and disadvantages …

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle Jan 1999

Ethnicity And Immunization Compliance, Carol Lee Spitznagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study examined the relationship between ethnicity and parents' compliance with immunizations of their children. Recent studies have shown that compliance rates for immunizations of children who were two years of age were below the standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics due to both health system barriers and family/child barriers. A survey of pediatric patients was conducted utilizing a convenience sample of 66 parents of children between the ages of twenty and twenty-eight months. The subjects were interviewed to determine factors affecting immunization compliance, including cultural factors consistent with the theoretical framework of Madeline Leininger. The statistical analysis …

A Study Of The Motives, Barriers, And Enablers Affecting Participation In Adult Distance Education Classes In An Iowa Community College, Roger Joseph Rezabek Jan 1999

A Study Of The Motives, Barriers, And Enablers Affecting Participation In Adult Distance Education Classes In An Iowa Community College, Roger Joseph Rezabek

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to explore the motives, barriers, and enablers that affect adult students in their decision to enroll in community college distance learning credit classes.

Three methodologies were used in the study: an online focus group of distance learning and adult education experts, enlisted to identify the main issues and questions that would be used in interviews with distance students; a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 210 distance students to determine motives, demographic information, and to act as a screening device for the interviews; in-depth interviews with 23 community college distance learners in northeast Iowa, …

Dimensions Of Roles, Responsibilities, Training Background And Needs, Policies, And Procedures For Paraeducators Dealing With Students With Special Needs, Beverly Anne Plagge Jan 1999

Dimensions Of Roles, Responsibilities, Training Background And Needs, Policies, And Procedures For Paraeducators Dealing With Students With Special Needs, Beverly Anne Plagge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this research study was to delineate and synthesize the roles, responsibilities, skill level, and training background and needs of paraeducators working with students with special needs from a state that requires paraeducator certification and a state that does not require paraeducator certification. The five core areas of roles and responsibilities were: (a) instructional support, (b) behavior management, (c) diagnostic support, (d) classroom organization, and (e) personal care assistance from the special education paraeducator and the special education teacher who teams with the paraeducator. Very few differences existed between what paraeducators and their teachers felt were appropriate and …

Juergen Habermas And Marx: Critique Of An Incipient Public Sphere, Russell Lee Rockwell Jan 1999

Juergen Habermas And Marx: Critique Of An Incipient Public Sphere, Russell Lee Rockwell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the relationship of Jurgen Habermas's ideas to those of Marx. A close reading of Habermas's major works, in conjunction with a close reading as well of the Marx texts he analyzes, comprises the thematically first part. The Habermas texts include the following, with original German publication dates: "Between Philosophy and Science: Marxism as Critique" (1960); Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere (1962); Knowledge and Human Interests (1968); Legitimation Crisis (1973); "Reconstruction of Historical Materialism" (1975); and, The Theory of Communicative Action (1981). These texts are shown to contain a two decade-long argument that, (a) the relevance of …

Investigation Of The Glucose-Induced Inactivation Of Maltose Permease In Saccharomyces, Igor L. Medintz Jan 1999

Investigation Of The Glucose-Induced Inactivation Of Maltose Permease In Saccharomyces, Igor L. Medintz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The addition of glucose to maltose fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells results in the rapid loss of maltose transport activity. This results both from the repression of the maltose permease gene transcription and from the post-translational inactivation of maltose permease through a process termed glucose-induced inactivation of maltose permease. The inactivation consists of two separable processes, a rapid inhibition of maltose transport activity and by a slower degradation of maltose permease protein. Degradation is dependent on endocytosis, vesicular sorting and vacuolar proteolysis, and is independent of the proteasome. Furthermore, maltose permease exists in differentially phosphorylated forms.

Ubiquitin and the ubiquitin-conjugating system …

Degradation Of Explosives In Solution Using Bacteria, A Fungus (Phanerochaete Chrysosporium), Titanium Dioxide, Ozone, And Electrochemical Peroxidation, Stéphane Debost Jan 1999

Degradation Of Explosives In Solution Using Bacteria, A Fungus (Phanerochaete Chrysosporium), Titanium Dioxide, Ozone, And Electrochemical Peroxidation, Stéphane Debost

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As a result of munitions manufacturing and decommissioning, explosive compounds have contaminated groundwater and soils at many sites throughout the U.S. and worldwide. Three of the most commonly occurring explosive contaminants are TNT, ROX, and HMX. Many processes, biological as well as physical, have been developed to remediate the contaminated material. But feasibility studies rarely take into account the three contaminants at once. We chose four of the technologies used to remediate explosives-contaminated water and studied comparatively their effectiveness and efficiency in degrading TNT, ROX, and HMX in solution at their maximal solubilities. The chosen technologies were bacterial and fungal …
