Design Considerations And Thermodynamic Feasibility Study Of A Meso-Scale Refrigerator, Nabil Shovon Ashraf Jan 1999

Design Considerations And Thermodynamic Feasibility Study Of A Meso-Scale Refrigerator, Nabil Shovon Ashraf

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in micro-fabrication technology have ushered a new era in miniaturization of chemical, environmental and energy systems. This foreseeable trend towards miniaturization in chemical, environmental and mechanical systems is expected to revolutionize the ways the human life is being perceived today. The high volume and mass reproducibility is seen as the striking aspect of micro-fabrication based miniature systems, offering economies far exceeding than the economies of scale obtained in large plants. The focus of this thesis work is directed at the thermodynamic feasibility and preliminary prototype design for a meso-scale refrigerator. Miniaturization to sub-centimeter domain will enable configuring these …

The Effect Of Loss Functions On Empirical Bayes Reliability Analysis, Vincent A. R. Camara, Chris P. Tsokos Jan 1999

The Effect Of Loss Functions On Empirical Bayes Reliability Analysis, Vincent A. R. Camara, Chris P. Tsokos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The aim of the present study is to investigate the sensitivity of empirical Bayes estimates of the reliability function with respect to changing of the loss function. In addition to applying some of the basic analytical results on empirical Bayes reliability obtained with the use of the “popular” squared error loss function, we shall derive some expressions corresponding to empirical Bayes reliability estimates obtained with the Higgins–Tsokos, the Harris and our proposed logarithmic loss functions. The concept of efficiency, along with the notion of integrated mean square error, will be used as a criterion to numerically compare our results. It is …

Comparison Of Scalable Key Distribution Schemes For Secure Group Communication, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok Samal Jan 1999

Comparison Of Scalable Key Distribution Schemes For Secure Group Communication, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Scalable secure key distribution is the most important feature of a scalable secure group communication protocol. Most of the existing scalable secure group communication protocols are based on a hierarchical key distribution tree. These schemes can be classified as hierarchical node based schemes and hierarchical key based schemes. In this paper; we compare recently proposed hierarchical key distribution schemes through simulation using real-life multicast group membership traces. Our simulations show that hierarchical node based approaches better distribute encryption cost among the entities of a multicast group. However hierarchical node based schemes “trust” internal nodes of a key distribution tree. We …

Transparent Vs. Opaque Vs. Translucent Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Helena Feng, Debasish Datta, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee Jan 1999

Transparent Vs. Opaque Vs. Translucent Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Helena Feng, Debasish Datta, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

A wavelength-routed optical network consists of multi-wavelength crossconnect switches (XCSs) which are interconnected by optical fibers. Some (or all) crossconnects, referred to as nodes in this paper, are also attached to access stations where data from several end-users could be multiplexed onto a single wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channel. An access station provides optical-to-electronic (O/E) conversion and wice wersa to interface the optical network with conventional electronic equipment. The access station, at an intermediate node, may also be used (as in this study) for signal regenerution on a lightpath. A new call is admitted into the network if a lightpath …

Chasing The Future: Has The Digital Performance In Sound Recordings Act Of 1995 Kept Pace With Technological Advances In Musical Performance, Or Is Copyright Law Lagging Behind, Steven V. Podolsky Jan 1999

Chasing The Future: Has The Digital Performance In Sound Recordings Act Of 1995 Kept Pace With Technological Advances In Musical Performance, Or Is Copyright Law Lagging Behind, Steven V. Podolsky

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Ever since jukeboxes and taped music began replacing bands in many restaurants and bars, performing musicians have been deprived of earnings and protection from unauthorized performance of their work. Digital technology exacerbated the problem by creating super quality sound that can be duplicated without a loss of quality. The Internet, which has become a medium for distributing prerecorded music, has the potential for doing damage to ownership interests throughout the entire recorded music industry. In just a few seconds, anyone with Internet access can retrieve, store, and listen to the performance without paying royalties to the performers. This article discusses …

Numerical Simulations Of Fe Ii Emission Spectra, E. M. Verner, D. A. Verner, K. T. Korista, Jason W. Ferguson, F. Hamann, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

This paper describes the techniques that we have used to incorporate a large-scale model of the Fe+ ion and resulting Fe IIemission into CLOUDY, a spectral synthesis code designed to simulate conditions within a plasma and model the resulting spectrum. We describe the numerical methods we use to determine the level populations, mutual line overlap fluorescence, collisional effects, and the heating-cooling effects of the atom on its environment. As currently implemented, the atom includes the lowest 371 levels (up to 11.6 eV) and predicts intensities of 68,635 lines. We describe our data sources, which include the most recent transition …

Integral Kernel Operators In The Cochran -Kuo -Sengupta Space., John Joseph Whitaker Jan 1999

Integral Kernel Operators In The Cochran -Kuo -Sengupta Space., John Joseph Whitaker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation contains several results about integral kernel operators in white noise analysis. The results found here apply to the space of test functions and generalized functions that were constructed in the paper of Cochran, Kuo, and Sengupta, based on a sequence of numbers &cubl0;an&cubr0; infinityn=0. . We shall prove results about existence, restrictions, and extensions of integral kernel operators based on the conditions on &cubl0;an&cubr0; infinityn=0. contained in the paper of Kubo, Kuo, and Sengupta. Also, we shall prove an analytic property and growth condition of the symbol of a continuous operator in CKS space. Our results are similar …

Estimating The Returns To Investment In Louisiana's Agricultural Research System., Yongli Zhu Jan 1999

Estimating The Returns To Investment In Louisiana's Agricultural Research System., Yongli Zhu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study demonstrates one way in which the combined nonparametric and parametric estimates of returns-to-research can be used to build a stronger argument for public investment in agricultural research. The data used in this study were constructed from time series information covering the period 1949--95. Tornqvist-Theil quantity indices were calculated to determine the implicit state price for each input category. The returns-to-research in Louisiana agriculture were estimated using both nonparametric and parametric estimators, with appropriate emphasis given to lag structures, data coherence, and functional forms. Model misspecification testing for the parametric model was examined. Internal rates of return were calculated …

Planting Method And Fertilization Timing Effects On Ridge-Till Corn, Keith A. Kohler, Mohammadreza Ghaffarzadeh, Richard M. Cruse Jan 1999

Planting Method And Fertilization Timing Effects On Ridge-Till Corn, Keith A. Kohler, Mohammadreza Ghaffarzadeh, Richard M. Cruse

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Fertilizer application technology has improved fertilizer use efficiency in ridge-till systems, but little work on planting methods and application timing within these systems has been done. A study was conducted to evaluate corn (Zea mays 1.) response to injected nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied to different planting methods at common application times. The performance of the late spring soil nitrate and the basal stalk nitrate tests was examined within these systems. A continuous corn and a corn-soybean [Glycine max (1) Merr.] rotation were used in 1989-1991 at two Iowa locations on Nicolett and Monona series soils, line-loamy, mixed, mesic Typic …

The Species Richness Of Birds Visiting A Yard Is Influenced By The Feeders/Seeds Present, David Joseph Horn Jan 1999

The Species Richness Of Birds Visiting A Yard Is Influenced By The Feeders/Seeds Present, David Joseph Horn

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Although seed preferences of species that visit bird feeders have been well documented, we know little about feeder/seed combinations most appropriate for attracting highest species richness or increasing abundance of individual species. I studied how the species composition of birds visiting a feeding station was influenced by addition of feeders filled with mixed seed, thistle, and suet in a yard that previously contained only a feeder with sunflower seeds. Addition of a seed mixture consisting of hulled sunflower, hulled peanuts, hulled millet, and hulled "tree" nuts in an elevated platform feeder increased species richness and total number of birds visiting …

The Vascular Flora Of Doolittle Prairie State Preserve - A Prairie Pothole Wetland Complex, Paul R. Wetzel, William R. Norris, Kevin M. Lyles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Doolittle Prairie State Preserve is a 10 ha prairie pothole wetland complex located in Story County, central Iowa. A vascular flora of Doolittle Prairie is compiled and the prominent vegetation communities and zones described based on field observations by the authors and several additional investigators from 1982 to 1997. The preserve contains 14 shallow wetlands comprised of low prairie, wet meadow, and shallow emergent plant communities, as well as a disturbed prairie community and fence rows. These communities support a diverse vascular flora of 223 native species, plus 42 non-natives, representing 59 families and 178 genera. The Asteraceae (40), Poaceae …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's Minerals: Their Occurrence, Origins, Industries, and Lore. Paul Garvin. 1998. University of Iowa Press, Iowa City IA. vii + 260 pages. ISBN 0-87745-626-7 hdbd., ISBN 0-87745-627-5 (pbk.).

A mineral is defined as a "naturally occurring, chemically homogeneous crystalline solid." Every mineral has a composition, structure, and characteristics that make it uniquely different from every other mineral. In his new book, Paul Garvin, Professor of Geology at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, presents a uniquely different discussion of Iowa's Minerals. While this book does contain the requisite discussions of mineral origins, chemistry, crystallography, and other descriptive information, Garvin enhances …

The Habitat And Distribution Of The Stinkpot, Sternotherus Odoratus, In Iowa, Kristi K. Sutton, James L. Christiansen Jan 1999

The Habitat And Distribution Of The Stinkpot, Sternotherus Odoratus, In Iowa, Kristi K. Sutton, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Twenty years of study have shown that the stinkpot, Sternotherus odoratus and the Illinois mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens spooneri) occur in Iowa primarily in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Even though the turtles are found within a kilometer of each other, they are never sympatric. Illinois mud turtles are most often associated with ephemeral ponds and soils of nearly pure sand (Sparta sand and Chelsea loamy fine sand), whereas stinkpots inhabit permanent water, often fed by cold springs, and are limited to sandy, loamy soils (Aquolls and Perks sandy loam). Even though several new localities have been discovered for stinkpots, population …
