Comprehensive, 3-Year Native American Report On Progress, Hank R. Lehrer, Brent D. Bowen

National Aeronautics and Space Administratin (NASA) and Space Grant (SG)

The NE NASA Native American Program should continue its outreach with reservation schools and tribal colleges. There has been considerable growth in this program and maturation is fast approaching. There has been involvement with teachers and children in those schools this past year and that growth should continue.

Specific thrust of the next year’s program will be to encourage more multi-school district educational programs in science and mathematics. The team sent to NASA Ames can form a cadre for next year’s workshop which would include other teachers from the same schools. Although field trips have been a part of past …

The Use And Understanding Of Indiana Statewide Testing Foreducational Progress Data By Indiana Teachers And Principals, David Kim Sever

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was threefold. First, it investigated how teachers and principals across the state of Indiana use standardized achievement test data. That is, how the use of test data influences decisions about instructional methods and curriculum within their schools. Secondly, the study investigated whether or not there is greater use of test data by educators at the elementary level (K–6) in comparison to their use at the secondary level (7–12) ofEducation. A third aspect of the study was to explore the teachers' and administrators' knowledge of standardized test terminology and basic concepts. Teachers and principals of grades …

Bounds On A Bug, Arthur T. Benjamin, Matthew T. Fluet '99 Jan 1999

Bounds On A Bug, Arthur T. Benjamin, Matthew T. Fluet '99

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In the game of Cootie, players race to construct a "cootie bug" by rolling a die to collect component parts. Each cootie bug is composed of a body, a head, two eyes, one nose, two antennae, and six legs. Players must first acquire the body of the bug by rolling a 1. Next, they must roll a 2 to add the head to the body. Once the body and head are both in place, the remaining body parts can be obtained in any order by rolling two 3s for the eyes, one 4 for the nose, two 5s for the …

The Bordalo Order On A Commutative Ring, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith Jan 1999

The Bordalo Order On A Commutative Ring, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

If R is a commutative ring with identity and ≤ is defined by letting a ≤ b mean ab = a or a = b, then (R,≤) is a partially ordered ring. Necessary and sufficient conditions on R are given for (R,≤) to be a lattice, and conditions are given for it to be modular or distributive. The results are applied to the rings Zn of integers mod n for n ≥ 2. In particular, if R is reduced, then (R,≤) is a lattice iff R is a weak Baer ring, and (R,≤) is a distributive lattice iff R …

Model Updating By Adding Known Masses And Stiffnesses, Philip D. Cha, Lisette G. De Pillis Jan 1999

Model Updating By Adding Known Masses And Stiffnesses, Philip D. Cha, Lisette G. De Pillis

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

New approaches are developed to update the analytical mass and stiffness matrices of a system. By adding known masses to the structure of interest, measuring the modes of vibration of this mass-modified system, and finally using this set of new data in conjunction with the initial modal survey, the mass matrix of the structure can be corrected. A similar approach can also be used to update the stiffness matrix of the system by attaching known stiffnesses. Manipulating the mass and stiffness correction matrices into vector forms, the connectivity information can be enforced, thereby preserving the physical configuration of the system, …

Black Holes And The Sym Phase Diagram, Miao Li, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian Jan 1999

Black Holes And The Sym Phase Diagram, Miao Li, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Making combined use of the matrix and Maldacena conjectures, the relation between various thermodynamic transitions in super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and supergravity is clarified. The thermodynamic phase diagram of an object in DLCQ M theory in four and five non-compact space dimensions is constructed; matrix strings, matrix black holes, and black p-branes are among the various phases. Critical manifolds are characterized by the principles of correspondence and longitudinal localization, and a triple point is identified. The microscopic dynamics of the matrix string near two of the transitions is studied; we identify a signature of black hole formation from SYM physics.

Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Of Layering Transitions Of Multilayer Nitrogen Physisorbed On Graphite, T. E. Burns, John R. Dennison, S. N. Ehrlich

All Physics Faculty Publications

We use synchrotron x-ray diffraction for structural analysis of the behavior of multilayer nitrogen films physisorbed on graphite foam. We provide structural information and concentrations of 2D and 3D solid phases at a coverage of Θ = 8 ML (Θ / 1 ML for a %3 x %3 structure) for temperatures from below the bulk α-ß transition temperature [Tα-ß = 34 " 0.5 K] to above the bulk triple point [Ttp = 63 K]. Our data indicate layering begins near Tα-ß, with subsequent layering occurring as the temperature is raised; all bulk nitrogen forms disordered film …

Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward Adams, Daniel Farber Jan 1999

Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward Adams, Daniel Farber

Articles

Formalists and antiformalists continue to debate the utility of using legislative history and current social values to interpret statutes. Lost in the debate, however, is a clear model of how judges actually make decisions. Rather than focusing on complex problems presented by actual judicial decisions, formalists and antiformalists concentrate on stylized examples of simple statutes. In this Article, Professors Adams and Farber construct a more functional model of judicial decisionmaking by focusing on complex problems. They use cognitive psychological research on expert reasoning and techniques from an emerging area in the field of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, to construct their model. …

Prospectus For Information Ecology, John R. Stepp Jan 1999

Prospectus For Information Ecology, John R. Stepp

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Information Ecology (hereafter IE) is a field of inquiry being developed, in part, by members of the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia (Appendix A). The following prospectus represents a work in progress and is the latest incarnation in a series of revisions since the first IE prospectus was developed in 1990 (Appendix B). The purpose of the prospectus is not to bound what is, admittedly, an eclectic mode of investigation, but rather to outline a field of inquiry that is inherently multidisciplinary and seeks theoretical complementarity both among disparate fields and levels of analysis. The goals are as follows: …

Time-Distance Diagrams: A Powerful Tool For Service Planning And Control, Eric C. Bruun, Vukan R. Vuchic, Yong-Eun Shin Jan 1999

Time-Distance Diagrams: A Powerful Tool For Service Planning And Control, Eric C. Bruun, Vukan R. Vuchic, Yong-Eun Shin

Journal of Public Transportation

Graphical scheduling is an old technique that has been neglected, or never acquired, in many North American transit agencies. It retains its advantages in basic schedule design and analysis as it eases the solution to problems that are difficult to solve analytically. Even information about simple routes is enhanced by the detailed operating characteristics inherent in detailed vehicle trajectories and by the relative ease with which accelerated service and service recovery strategies can be investigated. It also can be used to confirm and refine solutions that are generated by analytic methods. The methodology is reviewed in the context of such …

Africa: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Grades 2-4, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver

Ricks Curriculum Units Series

An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

Design Considerations And Thermodynamic Feasibility Study Of A Meso-Scale Refrigerator, Nabil Shovon Ashraf Jan 1999

Design Considerations And Thermodynamic Feasibility Study Of A Meso-Scale Refrigerator, Nabil Shovon Ashraf

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in micro-fabrication technology have ushered a new era in miniaturization of chemical, environmental and energy systems. This foreseeable trend towards miniaturization in chemical, environmental and mechanical systems is expected to revolutionize the ways the human life is being perceived today. The high volume and mass reproducibility is seen as the striking aspect of micro-fabrication based miniature systems, offering economies far exceeding than the economies of scale obtained in large plants. The focus of this thesis work is directed at the thermodynamic feasibility and preliminary prototype design for a meso-scale refrigerator. Miniaturization to sub-centimeter domain will enable configuring these …

The Effect Of Loss Functions On Empirical Bayes Reliability Analysis, Vincent A. R. Camara, Chris P. Tsokos Jan 1999

The Effect Of Loss Functions On Empirical Bayes Reliability Analysis, Vincent A. R. Camara, Chris P. Tsokos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The aim of the present study is to investigate the sensitivity of empirical Bayes estimates of the reliability function with respect to changing of the loss function. In addition to applying some of the basic analytical results on empirical Bayes reliability obtained with the use of the “popular” squared error loss function, we shall derive some expressions corresponding to empirical Bayes reliability estimates obtained with the Higgins–Tsokos, the Harris and our proposed logarithmic loss functions. The concept of efficiency, along with the notion of integrated mean square error, will be used as a criterion to numerically compare our results. It is …
