Community Composition Of Dry Prairie In Iowa And Southeast Nebraska, Thomas R. Rosburg Jan 1999

Community Composition Of Dry Prairie In Iowa And Southeast Nebraska, Thomas R. Rosburg

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Results from quantitative research on the community composition of dry prairies across Iowa were consolidated from three different studies completed since 1983. Information is provided on the distribution and abundance of 204 dry prairie species. The most abundant species included little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), side-oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torrey), prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis (Gray) Gray) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Multivariate analyses were completed using two independent measures of species abundance-relative cover and community constancy. When relative cover was used to determine community composition, the abundance of graminoids (tallgrasses vs. mid-grasses) …

Graduate Record 1999: Priceless, Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

The Mastercard "priceless" advertising campaign hits on a specific point — there are some items you can put a price on, and there are some you cannot. The point rings true at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. You can put a price on books, room and board, dinner, clothes. You can count the number of hours you spent studying, talking, partying, or sleeping. But if you combined all your time and money spent in Weatherford, Oklahoma, you could never put a price on it. Your four years in Southwestern are wrapped up in a combination of experiences, fun, sorrow, stress, happiness …

Review Of The Applications Of Neural Networks In Chemical Process Control—Simulation And Online Implementation, Mohamed Azlan Hussain

Pre-2000

As a result of good modeling capabilities, neural networks have been used extensively for a number of chemical engineering applications such as sensor data analysis, fault detection and nonlinear process identi®cation. However, only in recent years, with the upsurge in the research on nonlinear control, has its use in process control been widespread. This paper intend to provide an extensive review of the various applications utilizing neural networks for chemical process control, both in simulation and online implementation. We have categorized the review under three major control schemes; predictive control, inverse-model-based control, and adaptive control methods, respectively. In each of …

Geophysical Surveys Across The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site To Determine Geophysical Parameters Of A Shallow, Alluvial Aquifer, William P. Clement, Michael D. Knoll, Lee M. Liberty, Paul R. Donaldson, Paul Michaels, Warren Barrash, John R. Pelton Jan 1999

Geophysical Surveys Across The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site To Determine Geophysical Parameters Of A Shallow, Alluvial Aquifer, William P. Clement, Michael D. Knoll, Lee M. Liberty, Paul R. Donaldson, Paul Michaels, Warren Barrash, John R. Pelton

CGISS Publications and Presentations

At the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site (BHRS), we are characterizing the hydrogeophysical parameters of a cobble-and-sand, unconfined aquifer using a wide variety of geophysical methods. Our goal is to develop methods for mapping variations in permeability by combining non-invasive geophysical data with hydrologic measurements. We are using seismic, ground penetrating radar, and electrical methods in a variety of configurations to provide images of and parameter distributions at the BHRS. Issues such as resolution, depth of penetration, and the ability to image the desired parameters will help determine the most effective methods. Supporting data sets from the BHRS include core analyses …

3‐D Gpr Imaging Of Complex Fluvial Stratigraphy At The Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, William R. Peretti, Michael D. Knoll, William P. Clement, Warren Barrash

CGISS Publications and Presentations

A series of three-dimensional (3-D) ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data sets were acquired over the central wellfield area at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site (BHRS). The survey region is 30 m x 18 m and encompasses 13 wells. The goal of the surveys is to image the complex fluvial (cobble-and-sand) stratigraphy around the wellfield. These images will be used to construct 3-D models of the sedimentary architecture and to help constrain fine-scale models of hydrologic and geophysical parameters at the site. The data sets were acquired using 25 MHz, 50 MHz, 100 MHz and 200 MHz antennas. Depth of penetration ranges …

Transition Criteria - From A Pit To A Crack, Tarun Goswami, David W. Hoeppner Jan 1999

Transition Criteria - From A Pit To A Crack, Tarun Goswami, David W. Hoeppner

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

A brief review of pitting, which is a localized corrosion process resulting from pitting and fatigue interaction has been conducted in this paper. The transition of a pit to a crack is a very important phenomenon occurring under PCF conditions. Various theories for transition of a pit to a crack were examined within the limits of present understanding and limitations of the models. The transition of a pit to a crack was also discussed for a variety of pit shapes utilizing the pit aspect ratios, defect size and linear elastic fracture mechanics, crack tip characterizing parameters such as Mode I …

Maintaining Transitive Closure Of Graphs In Sql, Guozhu Dong, Leonid Libkin, Jianwen Su, Limsoon Wong Jan 1999

Maintaining Transitive Closure Of Graphs In Sql, Guozhu Dong, Leonid Libkin, Jianwen Su, Limsoon Wong

Kno.e.sis Publications

It is common knowledge that relational calculus and even SQL are not expressive enough to express recursive queries such as the transitive closure. In a real database system, one can overcome this problem by storing a graph together with its transitive closure and maintaining the latter whenever updates to the former occur. This leads to the concept of an incremental evaluation system, or IES.

Much is already known about the theory of IES but very little has been translated into practice. The purpose of this paper is to fill in this gap by providing a gentle introduction to and …

Abrupt Along-Strike Change In Tectonic Style: San Andreas Fault Zone, San Francisco Peninsula, Mary Lou Zoback, Robert C. Jachens, Jean A. Olson Jan 1999

Abrupt Along-Strike Change In Tectonic Style: San Andreas Fault Zone, San Francisco Peninsula, Mary Lou Zoback, Robert C. Jachens, Jean A. Olson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Seismicity and high-resolution aeromagnetic data are used to define an abrupt change from compressional to extensional tectonism within a 10- to 15-km-wide zone along the San Andreas fault on the San Francisco Peninsula and offshore from the Golden Gate. This 100-km-long section of the San Andreas fault includes the hypocenter of the Mw= 7.8 1906 San Francisco earthquake as well as the highest level of persistent microseismicity along that ~470-km-long rupture. We define two distinct zones of deformation along this stretch of the fault using well-constrained relocations of all post- 1969 earthquakes based a joint one-dimensional velocity/hypocenter inversion …

Linking It Applications With Manufacturing Strategy: An Intelligent Decision Support System Approach, Ravi Kathuria, Murugan Anandarajan, Magid Igbaria

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Research has indicated the importance of matching Information Technology (IT) applications or manufacturing systems with the competitive strategy of a company. Selection of the right type of IT application is, however, a challenging task. When a company, with a given dominant process structure, emphasizes two or more competitive priorities, such as quality, product flexibility, etc., an unaided manager faces a complex decision problem in choosing from alternative IT applications available in the areas of product design through distribution. In this paper, we developed an Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) that would assist managers with: assessment of the relative importance of …

Invariant Measures For Set-Valued Dynamical Systems, Walter Miller, Ethan Akin Jan 1999

Invariant Measures For Set-Valued Dynamical Systems, Walter Miller, Ethan Akin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A continuous map on a compact metric space, regarded as a dynamical system by iteration, admits invariant measures. For a closed relation on such a space, or, equivalently, an upper semicontinuous set-valued map, there are several concepts which extend this idea of invariance for a measure. We prove that four such are equivalent. In particular, such relation invariant measures arise as projections from shift invariant measures on the space of sample paths. There is a similarly close relationship between the ideas of chain recurrence for the set-valued system and for the shift on the sample path space. ©1999 American Mathematical …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Controlled pollination in field cages is used at the United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service North Central Regional Plane Introduction Station (NCRPIS) for seed increase of several plane species. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., have been used almost exclusively for several years. Recently we began investigating other pollinating insects for controlled pollination. 0smia cornifrons (Radoszkowski), a solitary bee imported from Japan, has been an excellent early-season pollinator. We placed domiciles of these bees in backyards of the NCRPIS staff to aid us in providing adequate numbers of bees for use in field cages the following growing season. …

A Municipal Inventory And Evaluation Of Natural Areas: History And Methodology, William R. Norris, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An inventory of natural areas in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa was conducted (1990-1994) in response to conflicts arising when significant natural areas were encountered on lands approved for development by the City of Ames (Iowa) Planning Office. Methods for objective evaluation of woodland and prairie quality were developed for use during the inventory. The woodland method is based on four components: I) Diversity of expected species, H) Structure of canopy and understory layers, III) Fidelity of species to the habitat and IV) absence of Introduced Species. Rules are explicitly stated for the scoring of each component for both the …
