Recurrence And Ergodicity Of Interacting Particle Systems, J. Theodore Cox, Achim Klenke Jan 1999

Recurrence And Ergodicity Of Interacting Particle Systems, J. Theodore Cox, Achim Klenke

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Many interacting particle systems with short range interactions are not ergodic, but converge weakly towards a mixture of their ergodic invariant measures. The question arises whether a.s. the process eventually stays close to one of these ergodic states, or if it changes between the attainable ergodic states infinitely often ("recurrence"). Under the assumption that there exists a convergence--determining class of distributions that is (strongly) preserved under the dynamics, we show that the system is in fact recurrent in the above sense. We apply our method to several interacting particle systems, obtaining new or improved recurrence results. In addition, we answer …

Saving The Lost Sheep: Bringing Environmental Values Back Into The Fold With A New Epa Decisionmaking Paradigm, Victor B. Flatt Jan 1999

Saving The Lost Sheep: Bringing Environmental Values Back Into The Fold With A New Epa Decisionmaking Paradigm, Victor B. Flatt

Washington Law Review

Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses benefit-cost analysis in making many of its regulatory and enforcement decisions. This Article argues that, although required in some instances, the EPA's benefit-cost analysis procedure is incomplete, deeply flawed, and may even violate statutes in some respects. Much of the controversy surrounding environmental regulation can be attributed to this flawed benefit-cost analysis. This Article proposes a new paradigm for EPA regulatory decisionmaking. The proposed paradigm is a four-step decisionmaking process that enhances the outcome of the EPA's decisions by highlighting values that are often ignored or outside the traditional benefit-cost analysis but are …

The Conductor-Dielectric Junctions In A Low Density Plasma, B. V. Vayner, J. T. Galofaro, D. C. Ferguson, Win De Groot, Clint Thomson, John R. Dennison, Robert Davies Jan 1999

The Conductor-Dielectric Junctions In A Low Density Plasma, B. V. Vayner, J. T. Galofaro, D. C. Ferguson, Win De Groot, Clint Thomson, John R. Dennison, Robert Davies

All Physics Faculty Publications

A conductor-dielectric junction exposed to the space environment is a frequent spacecraft design feature. Due to spacecraft charging and/or solar array operation, the conductor can acquire a high potential with respect to the surrounding plasma. If this potential is positive the insulators adjacent to exposed conductors can collect current as if they were conductors themselves. This phenomenon, called snapover, results in a substantial increase in current collection, and may even result in a glow discharge if the potential is high enough. If a conductor has a negative potential, arcing can occur at the site of a junction. Both of these …

Available Resources Of The Fire Clay Coal In Part Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Stephen F. Greb, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Robert E. Andrews, John K. Hiett, James C. Cobb, Richard E. Sergeant Jan 1999

Available Resources Of The Fire Clay Coal In Part Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Stephen F. Greb, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Robert E. Andrews, John K. Hiett, James C. Cobb, Richard E. Sergeant

Report of Investigations--KGS

Available resources for the Fire Clay coal were calculated for a 15-quadrangle area in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. Original coal resources were estimated to be 1.8 billion tons (BT). Coal mined or lost in mining was estimated at 449 million tons (MT), leaving 1.3 BT of remaining Fire Clay resources in the study area. Of the remaining resources, 400 MT is restricted from mining, primarily because the coal is less than 28 in. thick, normally considered too thin to mine underground using present technology. The total coal available for mining in the study area is 911 MT, or 52 …

Continuous Models Of Computation For Logic Programs: Importing Continuous Mathematics Into Logic Programming's Algorithmic Foundations, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, David W. Jakel, Angel J. Rivera, Metin Sezgin Jan 1999

Continuous Models Of Computation For Logic Programs: Importing Continuous Mathematics Into Logic Programming's Algorithmic Foundations, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, David W. Jakel, Angel J. Rivera, Metin Sezgin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Logic programs may be construed as discrete-time and continuous-time dynamical systems with continuous states. Techniques for obtaining explicit formulations of such dynamical systems are presented and the computational performance of examples is presented. Extending 2-valued and n-valued logic to continuousvalued logic is shown to be unique, up to choosing the representations of the individual truth values as elements of a continuous field, provided that lowest degree polynomials are selected. In the case of 2-valued logic, the constraint that enables the uniqueness of the continualization is that the Jacobian matrices of the continualizations of the Boolean connectives have only affine entries. …

Truce: Agent Coordination Through Concurrent Interpretation Of Role-Based Protocols, Wilfred C. Jamison, Douglas Lea Jan 1999

Truce: Agent Coordination Through Concurrent Interpretation Of Role-Based Protocols, Wilfred C. Jamison, Douglas Lea

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Established protocols for coordination are essential for implementing joint-action activities among collaborating software agent. Most existing agents, however, are designed only to support static protocols, which limit their interaction domain to specific sets of agents. We develop an agent collaboration framework for open systems that enables an agent to expand its acquaintance set and to adapt to various coordination protocols dynamically. This is achieved through writing coordination scripts that are interpreted at collaboration time. We developed a role-based coordination language for writing these scripts, where the coordination mechanism used is the concurrent interpretation of a single script by the participants …

A Matrix-Based Approach To Global Locality Optimization, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, Prith Banerjee Jan 1999

A Matrix-Based Approach To Global Locality Optimization, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, Prith Banerjee

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Global locality optimization is a technique for improving the cache performance of a sequence of loop nests through a combination of loop and data layout transformations. Pure loop transformations are restricted by data dependences and may not be very successful in optimizing imperfectly nested loops and explicitly parallelized programs. Although pure data transformations are not constrained by data dependences, the impact of a data transformation on an array might be program-wide; that is, it can affect all the references to that array in all the loop nests. Therefore, in this paper we argue for an integrated approach that employs both …

In Situ Neutral Detergent Insoluble Nitrogen As A Method For Measuring Forage Protein Degradability, R. Mass, G. P. Lardy, R. J. Grant, Terry Klopfenstein Jan 1999

In Situ Neutral Detergent Insoluble Nitrogen As A Method For Measuring Forage Protein Degradability, R. Mass, G. P. Lardy, R. J. Grant, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A method of estimating the undegraded intake protein (UIP) concentration of forages was developed and validated with a series of in situ experiments. The hypothesis was that UIP calculated from in situ neutral detergent insoluble N (NDIN) is equal to total in situ N minus the microbial N that is estimated from purines (MN). The in situ disappearance rates of total in situ N (TN), MN, and NDIN were measured for six hay samples and two range masticate samples. Hypothetical rates of passage (2 or 5%/h) were used to calculate UIP (% of DM) for each N pool. Estimates of …

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran Jan 1999

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran

Articles

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. Their availability campaigns may yield social benefits, but sometimes they …

An Economic Approach To The Law Of Evidence, Richard A. Posner Jan 1999

An Economic Approach To The Law Of Evidence, Richard A. Posner

Articles

In this article, Judge Richard A. Posner presents the first comprehensive economic analysis of the law of evidence. The article is presented in three parts. First, Judge Posner proposes and describes two possible economic models, both a search and a cost-minimization approach, to describe how evidence is obtained, presented, and evaluated. In both, he incorporates Bayes' theorem to examine rational decisionmaking. Second, he examines the evidence gathering process, comparing and contrasting, in economic terms, the "inquisitorial" and "adversarial" systems of justice. The inquisitorial system, at first glance, appears to be more economically efficient. This, though, may be illusory, a result …

What Is Constitutional Theory?, David A. Strauss Jan 1999

What Is Constitutional Theory?, David A. Strauss

Articles

Just what is constitutional theory? How can it be, as Professor Fallon rightly says, that constitutional theory is both descriptive and prescriptive, and is supposed to produce results that seem morally right but also some results that make the theory's proponents uncomfortable? In this Reply, Professor Strauss argues that a constitutional theory tries to draw upon bases of agreement that exist within a legal culture and to extend those agreed-upon principles to resolve more controversial issues. In our culture, for example, there is widespread agreement both on abstract principles- such as the idea that the text of the Constitution is …

A Unifying Framework Supporting The Analysis And Development Of Safe Regression Test Selection Techniques, John Bible, Gregg Rothermel Jan 1999

A Unifying Framework Supporting The Analysis And Development Of Safe Regression Test Selection Techniques, John Bible, Gregg Rothermel

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Safe regression test selection (RTS) techniques let software testers reduce the number of test cases that need to be rerun to revalidate new versions of software, while ensuring that no fault-revealing test case (in the existing test suite) is excluded. Most previous work on safe regression test selection has focused on specific safe RTS algorithms, rather than addressing the theoretical foundations of safe RTS techniques in general. In this paper, we present a unifying framework for safe RTS that supports the analysis and development of safe RTS techniques. We show that every safe RTS technique is founded on a regression …

Investigation Of Iron-Removing Agents, Melanie Wolfe Jan 1999

Investigation Of Iron-Removing Agents, Melanie Wolfe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Benign chemical agents for removing iron from people with iron-overload diseases are lacking; thus the purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the toxicity of acetaminophen in iron-overloaded mice compared to normal mice and to evaluate the iron-mobilizing ability of this agent in an iron-overloaded mouse model. Female Hilltop (ICR) CVF mice, ranging between six months to one year of age, were used in these experiments. Mice were given intraperionteal(ip) injections of 300 mg/kg ferric hydroxide-dextran complex for a total of five, eight, or thirteen injections to achieve an iron-overloaded state. Iron-overloaded mice were given ip injections of either 350,200, …

Rapid Optical Variability In Radio-Quiet Quasars, Meenakshi Uppal Jan 1999

Rapid Optical Variability In Radio-Quiet Quasars, Meenakshi Uppal

Theses

Results from imaging and spectral surveys at radio wavelengths indicate that radio quiet quasars (RQQs) may have accretion-fuelled Super Massive Black Holes (SMBH) as their so-called central engines, similar to those hypothesised for radio loud quasars (RLQs). Recent evidence suggests that some RQQs may also harbour weak jets. Rapid optical variability is a common property of most RLQs with compact radio cores, flat radio spectra, and extended linear features emanating from the core and is linked to the presence of a powerful relativistically boosted jet. We present the results of a 3 year monitoring campaign of sixteen RQQs displaying evidence …

Juegos De Educatión: Collection Of Student-Centered Spanish Language Activities In A Web Based Format, Geoff W. Bullis, Jenny R. Smith

All Graduate Projects

This project incorporates the use of games and activities as supplemental resources with today's technology enhanced environment. It was designed to create an easily accessible resource for teachers of Spanish language instruction. Our project focused on creating a Web site on the Internet which included several student-centered activities. The development of the project included research of similar Web sites, literature regarding best teaching practices and methods, Gardner's multiple intelligences, specifically bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, and a teacher questionnaire focusing on the need for the project. Through the research and questionnaire it was determined that a dearth of Web-based resources are available to …
