Western Governors University: University Of The Future, Robert C. Albrecht Jan 1999

Western Governors University: University Of The Future, Robert C. Albrecht

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Western Governors University was initiated by Western governors in response to perceived needs in the marketplace and as a supplement to the traditional institutions. WGU offers competency-based credentials at a distance. Students are required to sit for assessments that measure their skills and competencies. The curriculum for each degree is defined by competencies rather than courses. The programs are particularly suited to non-traditional students who are unable to attend residential institutions.

A Literature Review Of Parental Involvement In Public Schools From 1994-1999, Barbara Gohl Keene Jan 1999

A Literature Review Of Parental Involvement In Public Schools From 1994-1999, Barbara Gohl Keene

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to see how parental involvement affected student achievement and how educators could involve parents at the middle grades and junior/senior high levels. American families and our society have changed dramatically over the past twenty-five years. These changes have had exciting effects on educational processes in schools. It has become a challenge to involve parents in the educational process, especially during the middle, junior and senior high school years. Parents are far more involved in their children's early childhood education than in their later years of schooling (Pryor, 1995). Involvement drops off dramatically when children …

A School-To-Work Transition Manual For Secondary Administrators, Ronald Dean Woodruff Jan 1999

A School-To-Work Transition Manual For Secondary Administrators, Ronald Dean Woodruff

All Graduate Projects

The School-to-Work Opportunities Act was designed to improve student learning, in-school retention, and transition to the workplace by improving the quality and relevance of education for all students. School-to-work uses experiences that integrate school-based and work-based learning and improve students' knowledge of and access to career opportunities. Administered by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor, the School-to-Work Opportunities Act gives States seed money to design and implement their own comprehensive School-to-Work system. States and localities are given broad latitude in designing their own systems so long as each includes the Act's three components: Work-based learning, school-based learning, and connecting …

Community College Perspectives On Teacher Preparation In Virginia, D. L. Neely-Fisher Jan 1999

Community College Perspectives On Teacher Preparation In Virginia, D. L. Neely-Fisher

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The need for future teachers who are well versed in mathematics and science will not be provided by Virginia’s four-year institutions alone. A large portion of those students who complete their K-8 teacher preparation programs at Virginia’s four-year institutions have studied a significant portion, if not all, of their mathematics and science at community colleges. Therefore, if future teachers are to have completed appropriate mathematics and science courses these must be provided by the community colleges. In addition, community colleges can play a critical role in attracting people with a high potential for becoming excellent teachers. Two-year colleges are located …

Experimental Design At The Intersection Of Mathematics, Science, And Technology In Grades K-6, R N. Giese, M. M. Mason Jan 1999

Experimental Design At The Intersection Of Mathematics, Science, And Technology In Grades K-6, R N. Giese, M. M. Mason

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Interdisciplinary courses, highlighting as they do the area(s) the disciplines have in common, often give the misperception of a single body of knowledge and/or way of knowing. However, discipline based courses often leave the equally mistaken notion that the disciplines have nothing in common. The task of the methods courses described in this paper is to reach an appropriate balance so that our pre-service elementary (K-6) teachers have a realistic perception of the independence and interdependence of mathematics and science. At the College of William and Mary each cohort of pre-service elementary teachers enrolls in mathematics and science methods courses …

Math and science methods courses will be combined into a workshop course. A new general studies program has been approved which requires eight hours of lab sciences and three hours of math. A General Science course has been approved which will be geared towards pre-service teachers. The professional core requires an additional eight hours of lab sciences, totaling 16 hours in science, and six hours of math, geared …

Wonders Of Technology-Teaching Physics To Non-Scientists, V. A. Niculescu, P. Martin Jan 1999

Wonders Of Technology-Teaching Physics To Non-Scientists, V. A. Niculescu, P. Martin

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Wonders of Technology is a conceptual physics course developed for non—science majors. The approach taken here in the introduction of the physical concepts is to depict their role in today’s technology, specifically the technology familiar to the students, and also to emphasize the connection between technology, art, and culture from the historical perspective. Why this approach? The traditional method of teaching physics is perceived by many students as "user-unfriendly" — they think physics is difficult, abstract, and, in fact, of little or no relevance to everyday life. The course Wonders of Technology alleviates this perception by placing the students on …

Algorithms For Scheduling Projects With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester, Willy Herroelen Jan 1999

Algorithms For Scheduling Projects With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The problem of scheduling projects under various types of resource constraints constitutes an important and challenging problem which has received increasing attention during the past several years. The bulk of the models and procedures designed for coping with these problem types aim at scheduling project activities to minimize the project duration subject to constant availability constraints on the required set of resources and precedence constraints that indicate that activities can only be started when all of their predecessors have already been finished. However, real-life project scheduling applications often involve more complicated types of precedence relations such as arbitrary minimal and …

A Classification Scheme For Project Scheduling Problems, Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck Jan 1999

A Classification Scheme For Project Scheduling Problems, Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The basic concern of scheduling is commonly described as the allocation of limited resources to tasks over time (Lawler et al. 1993, Pinedo 1995). The resources and tasks may take many forms. In project scheduling the tasks refer to the activities belonging to one or more projects. The execution of project activities may require the use of different types of resources (money, crews, equipment, …). The scheduling objectives may also take many forms (minimizing project duration, minimizing project costs, maximizing project revenues, optimizing due date performance,…). The result is a wide and steadily growing variety of problem types which motivates …

Long Memory And Asia Crisis: Implication For Capital Controls And Management, Kuo Chuen David Lee Jan 1999

Long Memory And Asia Crisis: Implication For Capital Controls And Management, Kuo Chuen David Lee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

“Financial markets are given to excesses and if a boom/bust sequence progresses beyond a certain point, it will never revert to where it came from. Instead of acting like a pendulum, financial markets have recently acted more like a wrecking ball, knocking over one economy after another.” - A testimony before the US House Banking Committee, Sep, 1998. There are three parts to this paper. The first part examines the time series behaviour of the equity indices of ten countries. Using Robinson (1995a)’s modified GPH estimator and Robinson (1994a)’s average periodogram estimator for the differencing parameter, we have detected that …

A Discrete Choice Based Facility Location Model For Inland Container Depots., Yuanquan Xu Jan 1999

A Discrete Choice Based Facility Location Model For Inland Container Depots., Yuanquan Xu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Container transport operations have been extending inland, providing more comprehensive service across the shipping network. Accordingly, container transport operators are making extensive capital investments in deploying inland container depot (ICD) networks. Optimizing the location of such facilities financially is vital for both capital and operating efficiencies. Currently, there are no models at the regional network level to guide container operators in locating ICDs on their networks. This research studies the ICD location problem and develops a comprehensive ICD location model. Based on comprehensive analysis of the container transport industry, focusing on ICD operations, this thesis developed a useful formulation of …
