In addition to preliminary results for the energy spectrum of van der Waals clusters, we review results of the application of this method to the computation of relaxation times of independent relaxation modes at the Ising critical point in two dimensions.

Extracting The Mystery From The Red Rectangle, Meghan Canning Jan 1999

Extracting The Mystery From The Red Rectangle, Meghan Canning

Theses

This paper reports on the use of point spread function fitting to model, and ultimately remove a stellar object from spectrophotometric images of an emission nebula called the Red Rectangle. In an effort to produce a semblance of the extended emission, the central star of the nebulosity is removed from images of the Red Rectangle nebula at three specific wavelengths. The nebular spectrum of the Red Rectangle reveals optical emission at particular wavelengths in the red region, and virtually no emission by around 500 nm. If a point spread function can be accurately fit to an image where no emission …

Cooperative Text And Line Art Extraction From A Topographic Map, Luyang Li, George Nagy, Ashok Samal, Sharad C. Seth, Yihong Xu Jan 1999

Cooperative Text And Line Art Extraction From A Topographic Map, Luyang Li, George Nagy, Ashok Samal, Sharad C. Seth, Yihong Xu

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

The black layer is digitized from a USGS topographic map digitized at 1000 dpi. The connected components of this layer are analyzed and separated into line art, text, and icons in two passes. The paired street casings are converted to polylines by vectorization and associated with street labels from the character recognition phase. The accuracy of character recognition is shown to improve by taking account of the frequently occurring overlap of line art with street labels. The experiments show that complete vectorization of the black line-layer bitmap is the major remaining problem.

Mafic Microgranular Enclaves In The Kozak Granodiorite, Western Anatolia, Cüneyt Akal, Cahi̇t Helvaci Jan 1999

Mafic Microgranular Enclaves In The Kozak Granodiorite, Western Anatolia, Cüneyt Akal, Cahi̇t Helvaci

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Enclaves which are relicts of initial basic magma give important information on the origin and evolution of granitic magmas. The mafic microgranular enclaves from the l-type Kozak pluton are less than 1 m that are located at the margin of pluton and mostly less than 15 cm and are generally in sharp contact with the surrounding granodiorite. In some cases, several enclaves may occur close to each other, but they are not closely clustered to form swarms. Most of the enclaves are ellipsoidal in shape. The largest enclaves are less ellipsoidal with curved boundaries. The mafic microgranular enclaves contain same …

Rock-Forming Nannofossils In Uppermost Jurassic-Lowercretaceous Rock Units Of Northwest Anatolia: Nannoconusand Its Resived Taxonomy, Sevi̇nç Özkan Altiner

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Nannoconids have been recorded in a rock-forming quantity in the uppermost Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous rock units in Northwest Anatolia, Turkey. Samples were collected from seventeen stratigraphic sections spanning the calciturbidities of the Yosunlukbayiri Formation and pelagic micrites of the Sogukçam Limestone. Because of rareness and difficulties for extracting of calcareous nannofossil species particularly zone markers in these type lithologies, nannoconids have particular attention in terms of biostratigraphy. Twenty nine species of nannoconids were recorded in the studied samples. Their taxonomy were revised and their stratigraphic ranges were given. The classification of genus Nannoconusis based on the gross morphology of the test, …

Geology Of The Dereiçi (Şavsat, Artvin) Cu-Pb-Zn Deposits, Mesut Soylu, Ayhan Erler Jan 1999

Geology Of The Dereiçi (Şavsat, Artvin) Cu-Pb-Zn Deposits, Mesut Soylu, Ayhan Erler

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The geological relationships between the rock units in the Dereiçi/Şavsat (Artvin) region and vein-type Cu-Pb-Zn deposits were presented in this paper. The study area comprises the Upper Cretaceous intermediate volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks, with Post-Eocene dykes of andesitic and diabasic composition. The mineral deposits are classified as (1) Sphalerite-Galena-Chalcopyrite-Pyrite veins (Talatin Madeni, Binektasi and Fikrinin Madeni), (2) milky quartz-Chalcopyrite-Sphalerite-Galena-Pyrite veins and (3) Chalcopyrite-Pyrite veins. The general paragenetic sequence of the mineralizations is observed as quartz I-pyrite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite-galena-quartz II-chalcocite-covellite. The wall rocks are subjected to silicification, sericitic alteration, chloritization and carbonatization.

Along-Strike Discontinuity Of Active Normal Faults And Its Influence On Quaternary Travertine Deposition; Examples From Western Turkey, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir Jan 1999

Along-Strike Discontinuity Of Active Normal Faults And Its Influence On Quaternary Travertine Deposition; Examples From Western Turkey, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Detail mapping of active fault zones bounding four travertine masses in the Gediz and Menderes grabens of western Turkey revealed that they are divided into geometric fault segments up to 13 km long. Fissures, supplying the carbonate-rich waters that give rise to the travertines are preferentially developed at the ends of the fault segments or in extensional step-over zones where the offset between the fault strands is about 1 km or more. The deposition of travertines in such structural settings is probably a consequence of the network of fissures supplying the carbonate-rich waters being highly interconnected where extensional strains were …

Metaphor And Understanding: The Work Of Lakoff And Johnson And Natural Language Processing, Karen M. Jakubowsky Jan 1999

Metaphor And Understanding: The Work Of Lakoff And Johnson And Natural Language Processing, Karen M. Jakubowsky

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Do you remember your first lesson in metaphor? Most likely, you learned that it is a comparison of one thing to another, to give a more descriptive account of something. "He was an iceberg" or "time is money" are obvious metaphors. They are regarded as simply vivid expressions to explain our ideas. However, George Lakoff, professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Mark Johnson, professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon, assert that metaphors are much more than literary devices. In their 1980 book, Metaphors We Live By, they claim that the way we think, act, …

An Endophytic Fungus As A Source Of New Antifungal Compounds, Lisa Marie Jungbauer Jan 1999

An Endophytic Fungus As A Source Of New Antifungal Compounds, Lisa Marie Jungbauer

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Medical advances in society such as organ transplants, prolonged chemotherapy, and those that lengthen the lives of AIDS patients and the elderly increase the number of immunocompromised individuals(1). When the immune system is compromised, opportunistic fungi can flourish and become fatal. Current antifungal treatments are limited and often toxic(2,3). In addition, strains of fungi resistant to available antifungals are emerging(4,5). Fungi were selected as the source of potential new antifungal agents because fungal antagonism has been reported in most fungal ecosystems(6). Endophytic fungi, which inhabit the spaces between plant cells, are known producers of natural products and that assist plants …

Fuzzy Systems Are Universal Approximators For A Smooth Function And Its Derivatives, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Yeung Yam Jan 1999

Fuzzy Systems Are Universal Approximators For A Smooth Function And Its Derivatives, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the reasons why fuzzy methodology is successful is that fuzzy systems are universal approximators, i.e., that we can approximate an arbitrary continuous function within any given accuracy by a fuzzy system. In some practical applications (e.g., in control), it is desirable to approximate not only the original function, but also its derivatives (so that, e.g., a fuzzy control approximating a smooth control will also be smooth). In our paper, we show that for any given accuracy, we can approximate an arbitrary smooth function by a fuzzy systems so that not only the function is approximated within this accuracy, …

Time-Bounded Kolmogorov Complexity May Help In Search For Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (Seti), Martin Schmidt

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main strategies in Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is trying to overhear communications between advanced civilizations. However, there is a (seeming) problem with this approach: advanced civilizations, most probably, save communication expenses by maximally compressing their messages, and the notion of a maximally compressed message is naturally formalized as a message x for which Kolmogorov complexity C(x) is close to its length l(x), i.e., as a "random" message. In other words, a maximally compressed message is indistinguishable from the truly random noise, and thus, trying to detect such a message does not seem to be a …

Extending T-Norms Beyond [0,1]: Relevant Results Of Semigroup Theory, Yeung Yam, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 1999

Extending T-Norms Beyond [0,1]: Relevant Results Of Semigroup Theory, Yeung Yam, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Originally, fuzzy logic was proposed to describe human reasoning. Lately, it turned out that fuzzy logic is also a convenient approximation tool, and that moreover, sometimes a better approximation can be obtained if we use real values outside the interval [0,1]; it is therefore necessary to describe possible extension of t-norms and t-conorms to such new values. It is reasonable to require that this extension be associative, i.e., that the set of truth value with the corresponding operation form a semigroup. Semigroups have been extensively studied in mathematics. In this short paper, we describe several results from semigroup theory which …

Noise Measurement Of Yba2Cu3O7-Χ And Ti2Ba2Ca2Cu2O10-Χ Thin Films, J.P. Zheng, Q.Y. Ying, S.Y. Dong, H.S. Kwok, Sy_Hwang Liou Jan 1999

Noise Measurement Of Yba2Cu3O7-Χ And Ti2Ba2Ca2Cu2O10-Χ Thin Films, J.P. Zheng, Q.Y. Ying, S.Y. Dong, H.S. Kwok, Sy_Hwang Liou

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

The noise of YBa2Cu3O7-χ and Ti2Ba2Ca2Cu2O10-χ thin films in the frequency range from 0.5 Hz to 100 kHz was studied. In the normal state, it was found that 1/f noise dominated, with a magnitude strongly dependent on temperature. In the superconducting state, the noise was only observable at frequencies below 5 Hz with our present setup. Equilibrium thermal fluctuation noise was not observed in these films.

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles Jan 1999

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Environmentally sound nitrogen (N) management is necessary to simultaneously achieve high crop yields and protect surface and groundwater quality. We evaluated a hand-held chlorophyll meter as a diagnostic tool for improving management for corn (Zea mays L.). Five N fertilizer rates (0, 67, 134, 201 and 280 kg N ha-1) were evaluated in one study, and in a second study, the meter was used to evaluate the N status of corn plants grown under varying tillage (chisel plow vs no-till), crop rotation (continuous corn vs corn-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]), and N management treatments. Meter readings were …

Ethnoarchaeological Consideration Of Social Relationship And Settlement Patterning Among Africans In The Caribbean Diaspora, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1999

Ethnoarchaeological Consideration Of Social Relationship And Settlement Patterning Among Africans In The Caribbean Diaspora, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses models of ethnoarchaeology. The crucial consideration should be an orientation towards an explicitly well-defined interface between models drawn from modern traditional behavior and those of the past. This is the main principle which forms the basis of the discussion of this paper. This approach was the obvious choice mainly because of the availability of the type of evidence in Africa and the African disapora that would permit observed continuities with the past. However, ethnoarchaeology should not be considered as an end in itself, but as one of the many tools which can be used to refine our …
