Classification Of Explosives Transformation Products In Plant Tissue, Steven L. Larson, Robert P. Jones, Lynn Escalon, Don Parker Jan 1999

Classification Of Explosives Transformation Products In Plant Tissue, Steven L. Larson, Robert P. Jones, Lynn Escalon, Don Parker

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Explosives contamination in surface or groundwater used for the irrigation of food crops and phytoremediation of explosives-contaminated soil or water using plant-assisted biodegradation have brought about concerns as to the fate of explosives in plants. Liquid scintillation counting, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography were utilized to characterize explosives (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine and trinitrotoluene) and their metabolites in plant tissues obtained from three separate studies. Analyzing tissues of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), corn (Zea mays), lettuce (Lacuta sativa), tomato (Lyopersicum esculentum), radish (Raphanus sativus), and parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) …

An Effective Autocad Curriculum For The High School Student, William Christopher Brown

Theses Digitization Project

The instruction of computer assisted drafting (CAD) in the high school classroom presents unique problems and challenges that typical colleges, technical schools, and industry do not address. Including issues such as cross curriculum instruction, beginning and advanced students in the same class, several courses in the same room, CAD and manual drafting taught concurrently.

Measured Energy Expenditure Of Tube-Fed Patients With Severe Neurodevelopment Disabilities, Roland N. Dickerson, Rex O. Brown, Jane M. Gervasio, Emily B. Hak, Lawrence J. Hak, John E. Williams Jan 1999

Measured Energy Expenditure Of Tube-Fed Patients With Severe Neurodevelopment Disabilities, Roland N. Dickerson, Rex O. Brown, Jane M. Gervasio, Emily B. Hak, Lawrence J. Hak, John E. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Objective: To determine measured resting energy expenditure (REE) of nonambulatory tube-fed patients with severe neurological neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Methods: Twenty patients were prospectively studied. Only steady state indirect calorimetry measurements were taken. All measurements were conducted using a canopy system. Nutritional needs were met entirely by enteral feedings via a permanent ostomy.

Results: REE was widely distributed from 16 kcals/kg/day to 39 kcals/kg/day. The mean REE (888 ±176 kcals/day) of the patients was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than predicted as estimated by the Harris-Benedict equations (1081 ± 155 kcals/day) and World Health Organization equations (1194 ± 167 kcals/day). Fat-free mass (FFM) was the best parameter for predicting REE. Two predictive equations were developed that are not significantly biased and more precise (≤ 15% error) than conventional predictive formulas.

Conclusion: Conventional formulas for estimating energy expenditure are inaccurate and generally overestimate measured energy expenditure of nonambulatory patients with severe developmental …

Environmental Assessment For Wild Horse Gathering Outside Wild Horse Herd Management Areas, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for the welfare of wild horses. The wild horse program is under constant scrutiny by the public for actions concerning wild horse management and gathering. Within the Rawlins field office (RFO) there is a substantial acreage of "checkerboard" lands. Approximately 50 percent of these lands are BLM-administered public lands and 50 percent are private lands controlled by many private entities. The northern portition of the gather area contains this type of land pattern.

Management Alternatives And Environmental Assessment, Mormon Row Historic District Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, United States, Department Of The Interior, National Park Service

Environmental Assessments (WY)

Few people visiting Mormon Row today realize that the six remaining homesteads constitute about a fifth of those that once defined the Mormon Row community. Time and the harsh climate have taken an extreme toll. Most structures that remain stand abandoned and in need of repair. The farms are not interpreted and most visitors probably do not even know that the historic area is within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park. Nevertheless, the area receives a light but steady amount of visitation. Visitors remark about inadequate parking, lack of interpretation, the deteriorated condition of many of the historic structures, …

Some Historical, Theoretical And Applied Aspects Of Quantitative Water Mass Analysis, Matthias Tomczak Jan 1999

Some Historical, Theoretical And Applied Aspects Of Quantitative Water Mass Analysis, Matthias Tomczak

Journal of Marine Research

The concept of water masses is reviewed from the point of view of quantitative water mass analysis. A theoretical framework is presented which describes the life history of water masses in terms of formation, consolidation, aging and decay. Water masses are described as physical entities and compared with their atmospheric counterparts (air masses). The classical temperature-salinity diagram is expanded into the mathematical concept of water types in an n-dimensional parameter space. Water types and their standard deviations are introduced as the foundation for quantitative water mass analysis. The relationship between parameter space and physical space is established through the …

Predictive Validity Of The "Ready Of Not" System For The Assessment Of Students Needing Remediation In Music Theory, Timothy A. Smith Jan 1999

Predictive Validity Of The "Ready Of Not" System For The Assessment Of Students Needing Remediation In Music Theory, Timothy A. Smith

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

A perennial problem in the teaching of music theory is how to identify students who are insufficiently prepared for the harmony/ear-training sequence. If it is a logistical problem - how to convene, grade, and advise such a throng before registration, it is also a problem of assessment - what skills and knowledge should one test, how exactly should a student proficient with the major key signatures (but not minor) be advised, and how poorly must one perform to be steered onto the remedial route? To solve the first problem, some instructors have devised computerized versions of paper-and-pencil tests. While such …

The Evaluation And Design Of An Undergraduate Music Theory Placement Exam, Barbara Murphy Jan 1999

The Evaluation And Design Of An Undergraduate Music Theory Placement Exam, Barbara Murphy

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

According to the National Association of Schools of Music 1999-2000 Handbook, all music majors must have certain competencies in aural skills and analysis, composition and improvisation, repertory and history, technology, and synthesis of ideas. Generally, students meet these requirements by taking courses in Basic Musicianship which include courses in Theory, Ear-training, and Musicology. These courses comprise 20-35 percent of their curriculum (24-42 hours of a typical 120 semester hour curriculum). Even though NASM states that to be admitted to a baccalaureate degree in music, students should possess a musical background that allows them to "relate musical sound to notation and …

Part Writing, Prose Writing - An Investigation Of Writing-To-Learn In The Music Theory Classroom, Bruce C. Kelley

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

In the last twenty years, educators have advanced the premise that writing, in various forms, can foster learning in every class in every discipline. While we routinely use writing in many ways to communicate, define a position, or make new connections, some forms of writing, such as lists, reminder notes, and diaries, tend to be mental scribbles indecipherable to all but the writer. These scribbles constitute one of language's most private forms: writing for the purpose of bringing personal meaning to a situation that previously had none.

How Can Whelan V. Jaslow And Lotus V. Borland Both Be Right? Reexamining The Economics Of Computer Software Reuse, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 511 (1999), Michael Risch

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The various circuit courts of appeal have been unable to agree on the appropriate method of determining when one computer program infringes the copyright in another computer program. This article traces the differences among the circuits, proposes a model to explain what courts are doing, asserts a set of factors that simplify the analysis of determining copyright infringement, and tests those factors against seemingly irreconcilable cases. Finally, the article applies the analysis to unresolved computer software issues of today in order to predict likely outcomes.

Issued Patents And The Standard Of Proof: Evidence Clear And Convincing Or Merely Ponderous, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 557 (1999), David W. Okey Jan 1999

Issued Patents And The Standard Of Proof: Evidence Clear And Convincing Or Merely Ponderous, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 557 (1999), David W. Okey

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Patent cases use a "preponderance of the evidence" standard of proof, unless the validity of a patent is in question, in which case the standard is "clear and convincing evidence." The comment examines the meaning of the standards in their application to United States patent practice. After giving examples with interference and infringement cases, the comment argues that the vast majority of cases are decided on evidence not presented to the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) during prosecution of the patent. The assumption that a patent is valid is based on the thorough examination it receives prior to its allowance …

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This essay addresses the use of digital signature technology and the certification authority, and poses the fundamental question of whether the traditional notary public should really serve as the model for the new position of certification authority. This paper begins with an historical review of the concern about document security and the measures taken to deal with those concerns. Second, the paper includes a very brief overview of the technological aspects of the digital signature and its value in the global marketplace. Next, this essay examines the similarities between the traditional notary and the certification authority, including the functions and …

The Utah Digital Signature Act As "Model" Legislation: A Critical Analysis, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 873 (1999), R. Jason Richards

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

With the current reliance on virtual transactions, the actual source and the authenticity of electronic transmissions must be determined. In realizing this need, Utah was the first state to pass legislation regarding the verification of electronic communications. In 1995, the legislature passed the Utah Digital Signature Act (the "Utah Act"), which mandates the creation of certification authorities - cybernotaries. In addition, the Division of Corporation and Commercial Code would administer rules to facilitate the implementation of the Utah Act. Since the codification of the Utah Act, over 35 states and jurisdictions implemented some form of digital or electronic signature legislation, …

The Regulation Of The Internet Encryption Technologies: Separating The Wheat From The Chaff, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 945 (1999), Kurt M. Saunders Jan 1999

The Regulation Of The Internet Encryption Technologies: Separating The Wheat From The Chaff, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 945 (1999), Kurt M. Saunders

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Both businesses and private individuals are trying to protect the confidentiality of electronic proprietary data and communications through the use of encryption technology. Encryption technology includes methods such as digital encryption, which uses an encryption algorithm to convert a plain text message to an encoded ciphertext. However, the use of such technology raises concerns for the federal law enforcement and national security authorities, who are concerned that criminals and terrorists will use the technology for their own purposes. Thus, the federal government has used United States national security policy coupled with law enforcement strategies to shape the regulation of encryption …

Potential Liability Under The Illinois Electronic Commerce Security Act: Is It A Risk Worth Taking?, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 909 (1999), Stephen G. Myers Jan 1999

Potential Liability Under The Illinois Electronic Commerce Security Act: Is It A Risk Worth Taking?, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 909 (1999), Stephen G. Myers

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This Comment argues that the potential liability of digital signatures under the Act is too great and, therefore, is not an effective mode of communication. Part II of this Comment explains the purpose, the significance, and the traditional role of the handwritten signature. Furthermore, Part II establishes the basics of the digital signature process as it relates to each participant. The participants in a digital signature process consist of a subscriber, a recipient, and a certification authority. Part III of this Comment analyzes and argues why the use of digital signatures, under the Act, is too great of a liability …
