Adult Survival And Imperfect Assessment Of Parentage: Effects On Male Parenting Decisions, R. A. Mauck, Elizabeth A. Marschall, Patricia G. Parker Jan 1999

Adult Survival And Imperfect Assessment Of Parentage: Effects On Male Parenting Decisions, R. A. Mauck, Elizabeth A. Marschall, Patricia G. Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

Applications of molecular methods to assess parentage have revealed that the distribution of reproductive success among individuals often differs, sometimes dramatically, from expectation based on observation of behavioral association. Much theory exists on whether and when males should reduce parental care in response to level of paternity. Life-history theory predicts that trade-offs in reproductive effort should be influenced by adult survival. We used a dynamic programming approach to address how level of paternity, ability to assess paternity, and adult survival rate interact to affect male tolerance of reduced parentage in a given brood. Adult survival has the greatest influence on …

Benthic Biodiversity And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Acid Mine Drainage, Acid Impacted And Nonimpacted Streams, Stephen D. Greene Jan 1999

Benthic Biodiversity And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Acid Mine Drainage, Acid Impacted And Nonimpacted Streams, Stephen D. Greene

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

South Fork of Sand Lick Creek, Logan County, West Virginia, drains an abandoned coal strip mine which had exploited Pottsville series coalbeds (Pennsylvania strata). These strata outcrop throughout southwestern West Virginia. North Fork watershed is relatively unchanged, save a small roadcut throughout. South Fork benthic community had not recovered although mining activity had ceased about 20 years earlier. Benthic communities were analyzed with detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). Family Chironomidae predominated South Fork benthic community throughout the study. North Fork’s benthic community had as major contributors acid resistant caddisfly family Hydropsychidae, mayfly family Baetidae, and stonefly families Perlodidae and Nemouridae. Family …

Comparing Three Bee Species For Controlled Pollination Of Selected Brassicaceae, R. L. Wilson, C. A. Abel, R. L. Luhman Jan 1999

Comparing Three Bee Species For Controlled Pollination Of Selected Brassicaceae, R. L. Wilson, C. A. Abel, R. L. Luhman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Pollination of species of Brassicaceae for seed increase at the USDA-ARS North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station (NCRPIS) has been accomplished for several years by using nucleus hives of honey bees, Apis mellifera L., in field cages. Brassicaceae are cool season crops that need pollination from late April to early June in the north temperate zone. Overwintered hives of honey bees need time to strengthen (i.e., increase their numbers) and thus it is difficult to make enough nuclei to meet our early season pollinations needs. Purchasmg package bees from suppliers in the southern U.S. is an expensive alternative. In this …

Search For “Quadrupole-Bound” Anions. I, Gennady L. Gutsev, Puru Jena, Rodney J. Bartlett

Physics Publications

In a classical model, some anions exist due to the attraction between an electron and a molecule’s dipole moment. When the dipole moment is sufficiently large (μcrit>2.5 D), an electron can be trapped. Can a sufficiently large quadrupole moment produce the same effect? To help answer this question, we can search for molecules with a large quadrupole moment and use predictive, ab initio, correlated quantum chemistry methods to assess whether an anion forms and, if it does, to discover its nature. For this purpose, coupled-cluster calculations are reported for the structure and properties of KnClm and KnCl−m (n,m=0–2). …

The Effect Of Carrier Gas Pressure On Vapor Phase Nucleation Experiments Using A Thermal Diffusion Cloud Chamber, D. Kane, S. P. Fisenko, M. Rusyniak, M. S. El-Shall Jan 1999

The Effect Of Carrier Gas Pressure On Vapor Phase Nucleation Experiments Using A Thermal Diffusion Cloud Chamber, D. Kane, S. P. Fisenko, M. Rusyniak, M. S. El-Shall

Chemistry Publications

Recent measurements of critical supersaturations for the vapor phase homogeneous nucleation of several substances using a diffusion cloud chamber technique exhibit a dependence on the pressure of the carrier gas used in the experiments. A model of droplet growth and motion in a diffusion cloud chamber, combined with the density and temperature profiles of the chamber is presented to explain the pressure dependent results. The model demonstrates that at higher carrier gas pressures the growth of the droplets is retarded and the optical scattering signal from the particles is reduced. It is concluded that the observed effect may not result …

Mixed Upwinding Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Convection-Diffusion Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak, Panayot S. Vassilevski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider an upwinding covolume or control-volume method for a system of rst order PDEs resulting from the mixed formulation of a convection-di usion equation with a variable anisotropic di usion tensor. The system can be used to model the steady state of the transport of a contaminant carried by a °ow. We use the lowest order Raviart{Thomas space and show that the concentration and concentration °ux both converge at one-half order provided that the exact °ux is in H1()2 and the exact concentration is in H1(). Some numerical experiments illustrating the error behavior of the scheme are provided.

A Theoretical Study Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer In Water, Newt E. Miller '99, Matthew C. Wander '97, Robert J. Cave Jan 1999

A Theoretical Study Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer In Water, Newt E. Miller '99, Matthew C. Wander '97, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The electronic coupling element for electron transfer between a donor and acceptor in water is examined using simulations combining molecular dynamics and semiempirical quantum mechanics. In the first phase of the simulations a model donor and acceptor are solvated in water, using realistic potentials. Following equilbration, molecular dynamics simulations are performed with the donor, acceptor, and water at approximately 300 K, under periodic boundary conditions. In the second phase of the simulation, the electronic coupling element between the donor and acceptor is calculated for a number of time slices, in the presence of the intervening water molecules (those having a …

Customizable And Ontology-Enhanced Medical Information Retrieval Interfaces, Gondy Leroy, K.M. Tolle, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper as an aid to providing synonyms and semantically related concepts to improve searching. All terms are related to the userquery and fit into the query context. The system is unique because its five components combine humancreated and computer-generated elements. The Arizona Noun Phraser extracts phrases from natural language user queries. WordNet and the UMLS Metathesaurus provide synonyms. The Arizona Concept Space generates conceptually related terms. Semantic relationships between queries and concepts are established using the UMLS Semantic Net. Two user studies conducted to evaluate the system are described.

On The Number Of Radially Symmetric Solutions To Dirichlet Problems With Jumping Nonlinearities Of Superlinear Order, Alfonso Castro, Hendrik J. Kuiper Jan 1999

On The Number Of Radially Symmetric Solutions To Dirichlet Problems With Jumping Nonlinearities Of Superlinear Order, Alfonso Castro, Hendrik J. Kuiper

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper is concerned with the multiplicity of radially symmetric solutions u(x) to the Dirichlet problem

Δu+f(u)=h(x)+cφ(x)

on the unit ball Ω⊂RN with boundary condition u=0 on ∂Ω. Here φ(x) is a positive function and f(u) is a function that is superlinear (but of subcritical growth) for large positive u, while for large negative u we have that f'(u)<μ, where μ is the smallest positive eigenvalue for Δψ+μψ=0 in Ω with ψ=0 on ∂Ω. It is shown that, given any integer k≥0, the value c may be chosen so large that there are 2k+1 solutions with k or less interior nodes. Existence of positive solutions is excluded for large enough values of c.

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 1997 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott L. Worthington, David M. Buchanan, R. Chad Hales

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Article is the thirteenth consecutive annual study tabulating and analyzing the voting behavior of the United States Supreme Court. This Article examines the Court's voting behavior during the 1997 Term. The study attempts to determine whether individual Justices and the Court as a whole are voting more "conservatively," more "liberally," or about the same as compared with past Terms.

Whether a vote is considered "conservative" or "liberal" depends upon the issues being decided. Generally, votes favoring the assertion of governmental power are "conservative," while votes favoring claims of individual liberty are considered "liberal." The issues are categorized into ten …

Characterization Of Central Iowa Forests With Permanent Plots, James W. Raich, Donald R. Farrar, Ruth A. Herzberg, Eenam Sin, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We describe a standard methodology for establishing and inventorying the woody vegetation in 0.1-ha permanent forest plots and we utilize the data from 86 plots to characterize the mature forest vegetation of central Iowa. Obvious differences existed between bottomland hardwoods and upland forest stands, but disturbed uplands contained species typical of bottomlands. Little-disturbed upland forest plots included a variety of species associations, but variation among plots was continuous. The trees dominating the mature upland forests of central Iowa grow in a wide variety of habitats, with the result that predictability of stand structure at any location is limited. Stands on …

Hooking The Big Idea: Working Titles In Creative Problem Solving By Young Latino Adolescents, Juliann Hector

Theses Digitization Project

Problem representation/problem finding skills are frequently the catalyst facilitating adroit knowledge base access and subsequent positive creative outcomes in adult populations. To determine whether judged creativity is similarly enhanced through young adolescents' use of a working title representation strategy within a curriculum knowledge base, 40 Latino partyicipants at two Southern California middle schools received brief written interactive directions for one of two different types of problem representation or a third, non-representational control group.
