An Integrated Curriculum For Music And Social Studies, Carol Jane Alldredge Jan 1999

An Integrated Curriculum For Music And Social Studies, Carol Jane Alldredge

All Graduate Projects

Music exists as a discipline that often enhances other subjects. An integrated curriculum can provide students with connections to the real world, greater depth of study, and can generate enthusiasm. Through integration, many boundaries can be crossed. The purpose of this project is to create an integrated curriculum for music and social studies for the fifth grade. The curriculum is for the period of the Renaissance and the American Revolution. Topics explored relate to the subject of integration. Guidelines from Washington State Commission on Student Learning as well as national standards for music and social studies are used as the …

Application Of Geometric Probability Techniques To The Evaluation Of Interaction Energies Arising From A General Radial Potential, David Schleef, Michelle Parry, Shu-Ju Tu, Brian Woodahl, Ephraim Fischbach Jan 1999

Application Of Geometric Probability Techniques To The Evaluation Of Interaction Energies Arising From A General Radial Potential, David Schleef, Michelle Parry, Shu-Ju Tu, Brian Woodahl, Ephraim Fischbach

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

A formalism is developed for using geometric probability techniques to evaluate interaction energies arising from a general radial potential V(r12), where r12 = ∣r2−r1∣. The integrals that arise in calculating these energies can be separated into a radial piece that depends on r12 and a nonradial piece that describes the geometry of the system, including the density distribution. We show that all geometric information can be encoded into a “radial density function” G(r12;ρ1,ρ2), which depends on r12 …

Irrigation Sagacity: A Measure Of Prudent Water Use, Kenneth H. Solomon, Charles M. Burt Jan 1999

Irrigation Sagacity: A Measure Of Prudent Water Use, Kenneth H. Solomon, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Within the western United States, water rights are granted for reasonable and beneficial water use, and a measure of irrigation performance that embodies this standard is needed. A new performance parameter, irrigation sagacity (IS), is recommended for this purpose. The term `sagacity' comes from `sagacious', meaning wise or prudent. IS is more closely tied to the water rights granted, and to the potential for water conservation and reallocation than is the traditional irrigation efficiency, which considers only beneficial uses. Sagacious uses are either beneficial, or non-beneficial but reasonable. Reasonable uses are those that, while not directly benefiting agronomic production within …

Use Of Engineering Geophysics In The Design Of Highway Passing Lanes, P. Michaels Jan 1999

Use Of Engineering Geophysics In The Design Of Highway Passing Lanes, P. Michaels

CGISS Publications and Presentations

The addition of passing lanes has been a long standing need on Idaho Route 55. This narrow, winding road is one of the few routes that links Boise, Idaho, with destinations to the north. The roadway is bounded by a steep rising slope on the east, and a precipitous drop to the Payette River on the west. Additionally, the area is known for landslide hazards. Given these hazards and uncertainties in the subsurface geology, Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) commissioned an engineering geophysical survey to aid in the design of the passing lanes just south of Banks, Idaho.

The engineering design …

Computer Software: Patentable Subject Matter Jurisprudence Comes Of Age, 18 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 113 (1999), Indira Saladi

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The Federal Circuit's ruling in State Street Bank Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc. represented a paradigm shift in subject matter jurisprudence. Historically, software has been unpatentable because it included a mathematical algorithm, could not pass the physicality test, and was subject to the business methods exception. The State Street ruling expanded the scope of patentable subject matters by focusing on other aspects of patentability such as novelty, nonobviousness, and utility. State Street refreshingly modernizes patent law for improved application to today's evolving high technology industries. In "Computer Software: Patentable Subject Matter Jurisprudence Comes of Age," the author examines …

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This comment will discuss the technology behind electronic document certification: digital signatures which enable parties to sign their names electronically to documents over the Internet. Part II of this comment will begin by discussing the traditional role of the notary in business transactions. Part II will also introduce encryption technology, digital signature technology, and how a CA can provide extremely reliable electronic document certification using such technologies. Part III will discuss the applications where this technology is being used today, albeit sparingly. Part III further discusses an application currently in development that will use digital signature technology in the future …

Quantifying The Surface Geometry Of Titanium Implant Material By Different Methods Of Analysis, Clara Pimienta, Rashad Tawashi Jan 1999

Quantifying The Surface Geometry Of Titanium Implant Material By Different Methods Of Analysis, Clara Pimienta, Rashad Tawashi

Cells and Materials

Biomaterial implant manufacturers have used rough surfaces to ensure better biocompatibility, less rejection and better adaptation of implants in the body. Proper characterization of biological interactions and biocompatibility of biomaterials requires a thorough understanding of surface complexity. Surface roughness has often been shown to be important in influencing biological reactions with the surface. Previous communications from our laboratory have described a dynamic active vision system (MVS camera) capable of measuring three-dimensional coordinates of titanium implant material surfaces. Fractal analysis, due to its straightforward relationship to texture, is used to characterize the degree of irregularity of a surface and is expressed …

Is Science Value Free?: Values And Scientific Understanding, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Exploring the role of values in scientific inquiry, Hugh Lacey examines the nature and meaning of values, and looks at challenges to the view, posed by postmodernists, feminists, radical ecologists, Third-World advocates and religious fundamentalists, that science is value free. He also focuses on discussions of 'development', especially in Third World countries.

Geology Of The Fire Clay Coal In Part Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Stephen F. Greb, John K. Hiett, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Robert E. Andrews, Richard E. Sergeant Jan 1999

Geology Of The Fire Clay Coal In Part Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Stephen F. Greb, John K. Hiett, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Robert E. Andrews, Richard E. Sergeant

Report of Investigations--KGS

Coal beds mined in Kentucky often are not laterally continuous in thickness, quality, or roof condition. Regional and local variation is common. Because thickness, quality, and roof conditions are the result of geologic processes that were active when the coal was deposited as a peat swamp, a better understanding of the relationships between geology and major coal resources can aid in identifying geologic trends, which can be extrapolated beyond areas of present mining. The focus of this study is on the Fire Clay (Hazard No. 4) coal, one of the leading producers in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field with 20 …

Spectroscopy Of Brown Dwarf Candidates In The Ρ Ophiuchi Molecular Core, Bruce Wilking, Thomas Greene, Michael Meyer Jan 1999

Spectroscopy Of Brown Dwarf Candidates In The Ρ Ophiuchi Molecular Core, Bruce Wilking, Thomas Greene, Michael Meyer

Physics Faculty Works

We present an analysis of low-resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf candidates in the core of the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types that are independent of reddening. Optical spectroscopy of one brown dwarf candidate confirms the spectral type derived from the water bands. Combining their spectral types with published near-infrared photometry, effective temperatures and bolometric stellar luminosities are derived, enabling us to place our sample …
