On The Detachment Of Step-Tapered Doublers : Part 1—Foundations, W. J. Bottega, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

One-dimensional edge debonding of layerwise step-tapered patches from both flat and cylindrical structures is examined. The problems are approach from a unified point of view, as propagating boundary problems in the calculus of variations, with the models for both flat and curved structures being formulated simultaneously. The effects of a contact zone adjacent to the bonded region are incorporated as is the phenomenon of edge-point contact. The formulation results in a selfconsistent representation of the various intact and debonded segments of the composite structure comprised of a multilayer patch and a base structure. It concurrently yields the conditions which establish …

Dimethyldioxirane In Tcf Bleaching Sequences, Nayereh Mahdavi Apr 1999

Dimethyldioxirane In Tcf Bleaching Sequences, Nayereh Mahdavi

Masters Theses

The use of chlorine containing bleaching process creates various organic compounds such as chlorinated furan, dioxin, and AOX (adsorbable organic halogen). The human and aquatic life has been affected with the formation of these chlorinated organic compounds. EPA is proposing new regulations to impose discharge limits on the conventional pollutant materials of the bleaching effluents.

The objective of this research was to evaluate two TCF (Total Chlorine Free) bleaching sequences that use hydrogen peroxide and DMD on oxygen delignified hardwood kraft pulp. In one of the sequences, the DMD stage (A) was used prior to the hydrogen peroxide stage (P), …

Asymptotic Analysis Of The Structure Of A Steady Planar Detonation: Review And Extension, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy Apr 1999

Asymptotic Analysis Of The Structure Of A Steady Planar Detonation: Review And Extension, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The structure of a steady planar Chapman-Jouguet detonation, which is supported by a direct first-order one-step irreversible exothermic unimolecular reaction, subject to Arrhenius kinetics, is examined. Solutions are studied, by means of a limit-processexpansion analysis, valid for A, proportional to the ratio of the reaction rate to the flow rate, going to zero, and for β, proportional to the ratio of the activation temperature to the maximum flow temperature, going to infinity, with the product Aβ½ going to zero. The results, essentially in agreement with the Zeldovich-von Neumann-Dōring model, show that the detonation consists of (1) a three-region upstream shocklike …

Review Of Cowbirds And Other Brood Parasites By Catherine P. Ortega, Paul Porneluzi Apr 1999

Review Of Cowbirds And Other Brood Parasites By Catherine P. Ortega, Paul Porneluzi

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Your attitude toward cowbirds and other brood parasites may be largely influenced by the nature of your experience with them. If your primary contact with brood parasites occurs when they appear with the host species you are watching, studying, or researching, it is easy to side with those who have characterized cowbirds as feathered wretches, social outcasts, arch villains, or pests of the highest order. If the focus of your attention is on cowbirds themselves, however, you may be more likely to view them as highly adapted, fascinating components of the ecosystem. If you are not already in the second …

Employability Expectations And Hiring Trends Of High School Graduates By Dubuque County Manufacturers, Lisa A. Freebolin Apr 1999

Employability Expectations And Hiring Trends Of High School Graduates By Dubuque County Manufacturers, Lisa A. Freebolin

Graduate Research Papers

Little research has been done to show skill requirements and employability trends for high school graduates in a specific local industrial sector, such as manufacturing. It was in an effort to better equip Dubuque's students with the skills they need for employability and success in the workplace, that this research has answered the question: What are the employability expectations and hiring trends of high school graduates by Dubuque County manufacturers?

The Best Way To Knock 'M Down, Arthur T. Benjamin, Matthew T. Fluet '99

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

"Knock 'm Down" is a game of dice that is so easy to learn that it is being played in classrooms around the world. Although this game has been effective at developing students' intuition about probability [Fendel et al. 1997; Hunt 1998], we will show that lurking underneath this deceptively simple game are many surprising and highly unintuitive results.

A Systematic Integration Of Register Allocation And Instruction Scheduling, Yukong Zhang Apr 1999

A Systematic Integration Of Register Allocation And Instruction Scheduling, Yukong Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

In order to achieve high performance, processor architecture has become more and more complicated. As a result, compiler-time optimizations have become more and more important for the effective use of a complex processor. One of the promising compiler-time optimizations is the integration of register allocation and instruction scheduling based on register-reuse chains. In the previous approach, however, the generation of register-reuse chains was not completely systematic and consequently created many unnecessary dependencies that restrict instruction scheduling.

This research proposes a new register allocation technique based on a systematic generation of register-reuse chains. The first phase of the proposed technique is …

Graphical Display And Data Structure For Virtual Prototyping, David William Manry Apr 1999

Graphical Display And Data Structure For Virtual Prototyping, David William Manry

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the goals of engineering firms is to bring better products to market faster. Although concurrent engineering can aid in this endeavor, it requires that all areas of an organization work simultaneously. Thus, current product data must be accessible to everyone.

Virtual prototyping allows this simultaneous exchange of information. Virtual prototyping not only replaces the physical model in product development with a virtual model, but also it goes further by allowing data associated with each part of the model to be accessed. This data is not limited to just geometric properties but could contain other quantifiable properties, such as …

Aluminum And Phosphorus Separation: Application To Preparation Of Target From Brain Tissue For 26Al Determination By Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Russell D. Brauer, J. David Robertson, Pankaj Sharma, Robert A. Yokel Apr 1999

Aluminum And Phosphorus Separation: Application To Preparation Of Target From Brain Tissue For 26Al Determination By Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Russell D. Brauer, J. David Robertson, Pankaj Sharma, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Acid digested brain containing 4 mg added 27Al was ashed at 1000°C to prepare an Al2O3 target for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis of 26Al. A glass-like material usually resulted which was thought to be aluminum (Al) oxyphosphate. The separation of Al and phosphate was investigated. Al, but not phosphate, was bound by a cation exchange resin (AG 50-X8). Hydrofluoric acid eluted the Al from the resin. Removal of phosphate from acid digested brain by this method produced an amorphous material after ashing that was easier to recover from the porcelain crucible and had a …

Benefit Analysis Of Igbt Power Device Simulation Modeling, Michael P. Gallaher, Sheila A. Martin

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Electronic and Electrical Engineering Laboratory (NIST/EEEL) program supports the development of mathematical models for several classes of semiconductor devices. This study presents the results from a microeconomic impact assessment of the development of mathematical models for the design of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) semiconductor power devices. NIST/EEEL’s IGBT mathematical modeling program (referred to as the NIST IGBT modeling program) has led to significant economic benefits. These benefits include: improvements in R&D efficiency, decreases in transaction costs, decreases in production costs, and improvements in product quality.

NIST’s activities have affected software companies, IGBT device …
