A Process Typology Of Knowledge Transfer Between Academics And Practitioners In Joint Product Development Projects, Ganesh N Prabhu Apr 1999

A Process Typology Of Knowledge Transfer Between Academics And Practitioners In Joint Product Development Projects, Ganesh N Prabhu

Working Papers

A grounded process typology of knowledge transfer between academics and practitioners emerged from a synthesis of case study research involving forty interviews of participants involved in twelve university-industry joint product development projects. Initial combinations of contextual and technical knowledge levels of participants in relation to the actual product development project requirements were found to set four different ideal types of knowledge transfer processes in such projects. The term contextual knowledge refers to an understanding of the actual application context required to develop the product, while the term technical knowledge refers to an understanding of the actual technology to be applied …

Evaluation Of Real-Time Fiber Communications For Parallel Collective Operations, Amy Apon, Parvathi Rajagopal Apr 1999

Evaluation Of Real-Time Fiber Communications For Parallel Collective Operations, Amy Apon, Parvathi Rajagopal

Publications

Real-Time Fiber Communications (RTFC) is a gigabit speed network that has been designed for damage tolerant local area networks. In addition to its damage tolerant characteristics, it has several features that make it attractive as a possible interconnection technology for parallel applications in a cluster of workstations. These characteristics include support for broadcast and multicast messaging, memory cache in the network interface card, and support for very fine grain writes to the network cache. Broadcast data is captured in network cache of all workstations in the network providing a distributed shared memory capability. In this paper, RTFC is introduced. The …

Spelling Practices In School Districts And Regions Across The United States And State Spelling Standards, Elaine Traynelis-Yurek, Mary W. Strong Apr 1999

Spelling Practices In School Districts And Regions Across The United States And State Spelling Standards, Elaine Traynelis-Yurek, Mary W. Strong

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The authors sent a survey during the 1996-97 school year to 670 school districts in 41 states requesting information on spelling instructional practices to ascertain whether spelling texts are still widely used in the United States given the current emphasis on developmental spelling in the primary grades and the March, 1996 publication of the NCTE/IRA standards. In addition, a search of the reading/language arts standards in 50 states in 1998 revealed that most states do have spelling standards, but only a few coincide with the CTE/IRA Standard 6 which mentions spelling.

Finite Element Simulation Of Creep Buckling Of Cipp Liners Under External Pressure, Qiang Zhao Apr 1999

Finite Element Simulation Of Creep Buckling Of Cipp Liners Under External Pressure, Qiang Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

The problem of long-term structural behavior of CIPP liners under external hydrostatic pressure has been characterized as a structural instability problem which is induced by time-dependent material deformation or creep. It is also a contact problem since the liner deflection is externally constrained by the host pipe. The intrinsically nonlinear problem is investigated by means of finite element simulation, with emphases on (a) the essential structural behaviors and mechanisms of buckling, and (b) the influences of inelastic material properties (i.e. yield strengths and creep rates) and geometrical parameters on liner's buckling resistance.

A liner first deforms as a free pipe …

The Rate-Based Execution Model, Kevin Jeffay, Steve Goddard Apr 1999

The Rate-Based Execution Model, Kevin Jeffay, Steve Goddard

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present a new task model for the real-time execution of event-driven tasks in which no a priori characterization of the actual arrival rates of events is known; only the expected arrival rates of events is known. We call this new task model rate-based execution (RBE), and it is a generalization of the common sporadic task model. The RBE model is motivated naturally by distributed multimedia and digital signal processing applications.
We identify necessary and sufficient conditions for determining the feasibility of an RBE task set, and an optimal scheduling algorithm (based on preemptive earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduling) for scheduling the …

Process Of Change In Reading Instruction: A Model Of Transition, Beth Hurst

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this study was to examine closely the processes, both theoretical and enacted, a teacher undergoes when making changes in methods of reading instruction. A case study using qualitative research methods chronicled a teacher who after 19 years of teaching strictly by the basal began changing toward a balanced literature approach. A model of transition demonstrating this teacher's processes of change is included.

An Empirical Investigation On The Impacts Of Ground-Level Ozone Concentrations On National Ambient Air Quality Standards: The Case Of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Benedict Nweke Nwokolo

Doctoral Dissertations

This study presents information upon which the state of Louisiana can base its ozone State Implementation Plans (SIPs) designed to achieve planned emissions reduction that are required by the Clean Air Act (CAAA) of 1990. The research investigation included an assessment survey on a number of Transportation Control Measures (TCMs) and their degree of acceptability by the residents of Lake Charles area of Louisiana, the research target area. The TCMS were first ranked on the basis of people's perception of each TCM and four TCMs were later analyzed for cost-effectiveness using computer mathematical models. The Traffic Flow Improvements TCM was …

We Live In The Best Of Possible Worlds: A Proof, Guoqing Liu, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 1999

We Live In The Best Of Possible Worlds: A Proof, Guoqing Liu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that equations of motions and equations which describe the dynamics of physical fields can be deduced from the condition the action S (determined by the corresponding Lagrange function) is optimal. In other words, there is an optimality criterion on the set of all trajectories, and the actual trajectory is optimal with respect to this criterion.

The next reasonable question is: where does this optimality criterion on the set of all trajectories (i.e., the corresponding Lagrange function) come from? It is reasonable to assume that (similarly) on the set of all Lagrange functions, there is an optimality …

Airport Bird Threat In North America From Large Flocking Birds (Geese) (As Viewed By An Engine Manufacturer)-- Part 2, Thomas Alge Apr 1999

Airport Bird Threat In North America From Large Flocking Birds (Geese) (As Viewed By An Engine Manufacturer)-- Part 2, Thomas Alge

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Although the perceived threat from the growing geese population in North America has been increasing in recent years (and needs to be addressed), progress appears to have been made in reducing the damaging bird strikes through improved awareness and more effective airport bird hazard control programs worldwide. The following statistics attempt to quantify this progress for selected geographic regions. Reasons for the improvements and lessons learned, if known, are mentioned.

Airport Bird Threat In North America From Large Flocking Birds (Geese) (As Viewed By An Engine Manufacturer)--Part 3, Thomas Alge

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

This paper focuses on the increasing threat to aircraft and engines posed by the recorded growth in geese populations in North America. Service data show that goose strikes to aircraft and engines are increasing, especially in North America - consistent with the growing resident geese populations estimated by the USDA. Airport managers, along with the governmental authorities, need to develop a strategy to address this large flocking bird issue. This paper also presents statistics on the overall status of the bird threat for birds of all sizes in North America relative to other geographic regions. Overall, the data show that …

Evolution Of The Dfw International Airport Wildlife Management Program –- Lessons Learned, Curt W. Kuehner, John R. Alexander Apr 1999

Evolution Of The Dfw International Airport Wildlife Management Program –- Lessons Learned, Curt W. Kuehner, John R. Alexander

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

On January 7, 1997, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport experienced its first large bird strike event, involving the collision of over 350 European starlings with an American Airlines MD-80. This prompted a serious assessment of existing wildlife control procedures, and eventually resulted in the formation of the DFW Wildlife Control Program. The number of reported strikes has dropped from 157 in 1996 to 52 in 1998. The success of DFW’s program is the result of long, hard hours and extensive trial and error. However, wildlife management personnel at other airfields do not have to go through all the growing pains and …

Bird Proofing Hangars, Carl Lahser, Will Summers Apr 1999

Bird Proofing Hangars, Carl Lahser, Will Summers

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Birds can damage flight line structures and create serious health and safety risks for workers. Many of our structures are old and not designed as bird proof. Many controllable factors are discussed but the underlying principles are to deny birds food, water and access to resting/nesting areas. Various "tools" are discussed including grounds and building maintenance, landscaping, personnel management, chemical deterrents, poisons, and shooting or trapping.

Optimum Advertising Pulsation Strategies: A Dynamic Programming Approach, Hongkai Zhang Apr 1999

Optimum Advertising Pulsation Strategies: A Dynamic Programming Approach, Hongkai Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

This study, using the dynamic programming approach, has addressed the problem of optimally allocating a fixed advertising budget of a monopolistic firm over a planning horizon comprised of n equal periods to maximize two popular measures of advertising performance: (1) profits related to the advertising effort (discount factor r = 0), and (2) present value of profits related to the advertising effort (discount factor r > 0).

Two dynamic programming models that use the modified Vidale-Wolfe model to represent sales response to advertising are formulated with respect to whether the time value of money is considered. For a planning horizon comprised …

Excitation Of Morphology-Dependent Resonances And Van De Hulst's Localization Principle, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

When a laser beam scatters from a microparticle whose shape deviates from that of a sphere, a number of partial waves of the incident beam couple to a given partial wave of the scattered and interior fields. As a result, partial-wave coupling caused by small surface irregularities of a liquid droplet provides the mechanism for exciting low-radial-order morphology-dependent resonances.
