An Integrated Curriculum For Music And Social Studies, Carol Jane Alldredge
An Integrated Curriculum For Music And Social Studies, Carol Jane Alldredge
All Graduate Projects
Music exists as a discipline that often enhances other subjects. An integrated curriculum can provide students with connections to the real world, greater depth of study, and can generate enthusiasm. Through integration, many boundaries can be crossed. The purpose of this project is to create an integrated curriculum for music and social studies for the fifth grade. The curriculum is for the period of the Renaissance and the American Revolution. Topics explored relate to the subject of integration. Guidelines from Washington State Commission on Student Learning as well as national standards for music and social studies are used as the …

Studying Your Enemy: Ethical Guidelines For Online Research, Todd J. Schroer
Studying Your Enemy: Ethical Guidelines For Online Research, Todd J. Schroer
Iowa Journal of Communication
In the expanding field of studying computer-mediated interactions, the ethical implications of conducting research ming human subjects are an inherent issue. These ethical concerns are increased when the population under study is a relatively powerless, marginalized, and highly persecuted group. The ethical problems are further compounded when the researcher does not share in the world-view, or goals of the research subjects. Since 1992, I have med computers to monitor, contact, and interview White Racialists {sic} in order to combat their efforts. However, this does not relieve me of my ethical obligations as a sociologist: to protect my subjects, to fully …

Staging The Tyrant On The Seventeenth-Century French Stage, Nina Ekstein
Staging The Tyrant On The Seventeenth-Century French Stage, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The tyrant is a frequent figure of seventeenth-century theater. While not as ubiquitous as young lovers, fathers, or kings, the tyrant is a persistent subset of this last group throughout the period. Like so many elements of seventeenth-century theater, the tyrant has it origins in antiquity, both in terms of political theory and drama. Tyrants first appeared on the stage of fifth-century Athens, and the legends and histories of the tyrants of antiquity are often repeated on the French stage of the seventeenth century, from Hérode sending Marianne to her death, to Brute assassinating César, to Néron eliminating his rival …
Histoire Et Fiction Dans Léon L'Africain D'Amin Maalouf, Najib Redouane
Histoire Et Fiction Dans Léon L'Africain D'Amin Maalouf, Najib Redouane

Alas, Poor Ghost!, Gillian Bennett
Alas, Poor Ghost!, Gillian Bennett
All USU Press Publications
In the rational modern world, belief in the supernatural seemingly has been consigned to the worlds of entertainment and fantasy. Yet belief in other worldly phenomena, from poltergeists to telepathy, remains strong, as Gillian Bennett's research shows. Especially common is belief in continuing contact with, or the continuing presence of, dead family members. Bennett interviewed women in Manchester, England, asking them questions about ghosts and other aspects of the supernatural. (Her discussion of how her research methods and interview techniques evolved is in itself valuable.) She first published the results of the study in the well-received Traditions of Belief: Women …

Sexuality And Textuality (Fall 1999) (Whitman College), Robert D. Tobin
Sexuality And Textuality (Fall 1999) (Whitman College), Robert D. Tobin
Syllabi
This course was taught by Robert Tobin at Whitman College. Professor Tobin worked at Whitman for 18 years as associate dean of the faculty and chair of the humanities, and was named Cushing Eells Professor of the Humanities. Several of the courses he developed at Whitman would make the transition to Clark, where they continued to evolve.
"Sexuality and Textuality seeks to examine the ways in which sexuality has an effect upon literary texts. It questions whether an author's sexuality affects their writing, whether a reader's sexuality affects their reading, and to what extent one can analyze the sexuality of …

Since the 1970s the cognitive sciences have offered multidisciplinary ways of understanding the mind and cognition. The MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences (MITECS) is a landmark, comprehensive reference work that represents the methodological and theoretical diversity of this changing field.
This particular work is one of 471 concise entries, from Acquisition and Adaptationism to Wundt and X-bar Theory. Each article, written by a leading researcher in the field, provides an accessible introduction to an important concept in the cognitive sciences, as well as references or further readings. Six extended essays, which collectively serve as a roadmap to the articles, …

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper as an aid to providing synonyms and semantically related concepts to improve searching. All terms are related to the userquery and fit into the query context. The system is unique because its five components combine humancreated and computer-generated elements. The Arizona Noun Phraser extracts phrases from natural language user queries. WordNet and the UMLS Metathesaurus provide synonyms. The Arizona Concept Space generates conceptually related terms. Semantic relationships between queries and concepts are established using the UMLS Semantic Net. Two user studies conducted to evaluate the system are described.
Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Maxwell Institute Publications
Introduction
John W. Welch
In 1978, my colleagues and I completed our work on Chiasmus in Antiquity, which was published in 1981 by Gerstenberg Verlag in Hildesheim, Germany. That volume contained a bibliography generated mainly by Robert F. Smith. Over the past two decades, I have continued to collect bibliographical information on numerous books and articles that either speak about or make use of chiasmus. Those additional sources have been included here, expanding the earlier bibliography, in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. These items are presented alphabetically by author, and again in four main categories. Brief annotations …

Romans 1: Notes And Reflections, James E. Faulconer
Maxwell Institute Publications
The book of Romans can be difficult to understand, and it is used more than any other biblical book to challenge LDS doctrine. “When we understand Romans, it is obvious that not only need we not fear having others discuss Paul’s teachings, but we can use those very teachings to teach the truthfulness of the gospel understood through latter-day revelation.”
In commenting on Romans 1 verse by verse, author James E. Faulconer touches on such topics as faith, holiness, obedience, service to Christ, personal conversion and repentance, and becoming true saints. Romans 1: Notes and Reflections can be a valuable …

King Benjamin's Speech Made Simple, John W. Welch, Stephen D. Ricks

The speech of King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon is a masterpiece of Christian literature. These inspired words influenced later Book of Mormon prophets for generations, and they continue to reach across time to stir countless people today. King Benjamin’s Speech Made Simple is a popular abridgment of the expansive volume King Benjamin’s Speech: “That Ye May Learn Wisdom.” Prepared with the general reader in mind, this streamlined version presents the essential contents of the original book. Eleven studies examine the classic speech from many angles, viewing it as a manual for Christian discipleship, a coronation and covenant-renewal text, …
