Surface Topography Of Cuneiform Tablets, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis
Surface Topography Of Cuneiform Tablets, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis
Theses
Ancient Cuneiform tablets consists of one of the oldest forms of writings in the world. These clay tablets act as a link between our time and a time thousands of years ago. The surface of these Cuneiform tablets consists of wedge shaped characters and cylinder seal impressions. These features present many challenges to photographers as well as epistolary scholars. Modern technology and state of the art equipment can ease these hindrances and unlock secrets of past civilizations. Using surface topography techniques previously applied to intaglio prints and lithic artifacts as well as implementation of modern digital image processing techniques, images …

The Effects Of Speaking Rate Alternation On Nasalance Scores Of Individuals With Hearing Impairments, Kathleen L. Morrell
The Effects Of Speaking Rate Alternation On Nasalance Scores Of Individuals With Hearing Impairments, Kathleen L. Morrell
Honors Capstones
The purpose of the following study was to investigate the effects of changes of rate on the degree of nasalance in speakers with normal hearing and speakers with impaired hearing. Specifically, the following questions were asked: 1. Are speakers with impaired hearing able to manipulate rate in a fashion consistent with speakers with normal hearing? 2. Does nasalance, as measured using nasometry, increase with an increase in rate in speakers with normal hearing and speakers with impaired hearing? The study consisted often English speaking subjects, five with normal hearing and five with hearing impairments. All subjects were assessed using the …

Demonstrating Loss Of Control Over Technology: A Narrative Criticism, David P. Farlow
Demonstrating Loss Of Control Over Technology: A Narrative Criticism, David P. Farlow
Masters Theses
This study focuses on how individuals through their talk about computer mediated technology demonstrate a loss of control over that technology. Three separate computer mediated communication classes were involved in this study through the use of autoethnographies. The students in all three classes were asked at the beginning of the semester to keep field notes on their experiences with the technology. At the end of the semester the students were to summarize and report their experiences.
Because of the qualitative nature of the data, a narrative criticism of the stories students told about their experiences seemed to provide the most …

The opportunity that this shift from modernity to postmodernity may have opened for faith to speak to reason has not gone unnoticed by theologians. Indeed a number of what we might call poshnodern theologians have advocated various ways that Christians ought to wihless in their contemporary context. However, because these theologians have tended to mistake our postmodern world for a pluralistic world, they also have tended to write theologies that promote cultural security over faithful witness.

Information As Verb: Re-Conceptualizing Information For Cognitive And Ecological Models, David G. Casagrande
Information As Verb: Re-Conceptualizing Information For Cognitive And Ecological Models, David G. Casagrande
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Current notions of information are inadequate for ecological and cognitive models because they: 1) only account for information gain that results from reducing uncertainty; 2) assume binary logic; 3) fail to account for semantics and pragmatics; and 4) can not account for shared and externalized cognition. A different model of information is presented here, which treats information as a process of state change (i.e., the term is used as a verb), rather than as a variable. The potential for information is defined to include not only stimuli, but the context of the informational moment; and is distinguished from realized information, …
Communication Models, Translation, And Fidelity, Paul A. Soukup
Communication Models, Translation, And Fidelity, Paul A. Soukup
Communication
The fact that people regularly translate from one language to another or-as the American Bible Society (ABS) New Media Translations Project has done-from one medium to another, may seem to make it easier to evaluate those translations. At some point, people can, and do, claim that one translation "works" while another does not, that one translation has greater aesthetic qualities than another, or that one translation is more faithful than another. The fact that people make such judgments, though, does not necessarily make it easier to explain theoretically how they make them.
Among other things, communication study examines both the …

Crimes Of States/Crimes Of Hate: Lessons From Rwanda, José E. Alvarez
Faculty Articles
This Article examines the arguments of the epistemic community of international lawyers (primarily scholars, human rights activists, and others involved in the establishment or the operation of the ad hoc tribunals) that have been used to justify the creation, jurisdiction, and ongoing operation of the Balkan and Rwanda tribunals. First, international lawyers characterize offenses in both regions as crimes of states, because such offenses, either by definition or because of their scale or scope, tend to require the connivance or at least acquiescence of governmental authority. They are seen as crimes committed by states. Second, they are seen as crimes …
Lessons From The Akayesu Judgment, José E. Alvarez
Lessons From The Akayesu Judgment, José E. Alvarez
Faculty Articles
The judgment issued on September 2, 1998 by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda finding Jean-Paul Akayesu guilty on various charges of genocide and crimes against humanity is likely to please those who have long struggled for the progressive development and effective enforcement of international criminal law. This judgment, directed at the bourgmestre of the Taba commune in the Prefecture of Gitarama in Rwanda, is the first international conviction of an individual for genocide. Its symbolic significance is not likely to be lost on international lawyers.
Departmental Excellence: Constituencies In Tension, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Departmental Excellence: Constituencies In Tension, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article explores the question of departmental excellence within historicity and temporality and the political demands of multiple constituencies. If one accepts excellence as a rhetorical construct of political significance for a college campus, then one requires knowledge of the primary constituencies shaping this political debate. The eventual political outcome is shaped through the interplay of three constituencies: the discipline, the local campus and the larger public. The task for every department that wants to pursue excellence is to know, understand and operate within the hidden curriculum of a campus that socializes faculty to the ongoing mission of that particular …
Critiques Of Gatekeeping In Scholarly Journals: An Analysis Of Perceptions And Data, Jean Bodon, Larry Powell, Mark Hickson Iii
Critiques Of Gatekeeping In Scholarly Journals: An Analysis Of Perceptions And Data, Jean Bodon, Larry Powell, Mark Hickson Iii
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article analyzes criticisms on the nature and functioning of the editorial boards of communication journals. There are certain elements in the pattern among the critics of journal articles and the journal publishing process. First, they tend to distort what was written in the original article by changing the words, concepts, or ideas. Second, they redefine the parameters of the study they are critiquing. Third, there is sometimes an element of hypocrisy in the critics' attack. However, from the analysis it would appear that editors attempt to maintain balance considering experience in publishing, geographic and institutional affiliation, and gender.

Inheritance Hierarchies And Historical Reconstruction: Towards A History Of Slavonic Colour Terms, Andrew R. Hippisley, Gerald Gazdar
Inheritance Hierarchies And Historical Reconstruction: Towards A History Of Slavonic Colour Terms, Andrew R. Hippisley, Gerald Gazdar
Linguistics Faculty Publications
The last decade has witnessed an interest in inheritance hierarchies for the representation of linguistic knowledge. An obvious application is to historical reconstruction of a language family, but this is largely unexplored territory. We demonstrate the merits of such an approach with a default inheritance treatment of the colour terms of Slavonic: Slavonic because it is uncontroversially a genetic unit, and colour terms both because of their universality and because of the tight constraints on a language's colour term inventory (Berlin & Kay 1969, and subsequent work). In section I we discuss the colour terms of Slavonic and introduce Berlin …
