Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen Mar 1999

Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen

Student Work

In a public career spanning forty years, South Carolinian John C. Calhoun served in a variety of offices from state legislator to United States vice president. A central antebellum figure, he presents something of an enigma. Historically, Calhoun has been identified with the South and slavery, both of which he defended vigorously. Yet his significant, if challenging, contributions to American political and constitutional thought have proven to be his most enduring legacy. In the century and a half since his death, he has been the focus of a vast number of historical works ranging from multi-volume biographies to narrowly-focused interpretive …

Opportunities For Social Workers In An Aging World, Jordan I. Kosberg Mar 1999

Opportunities For Social Workers In An Aging World, Jordan I. Kosberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

It is believed that there are professional opportunities for gerontological social workers in an aging world. To be discussed are potential social work roles within international organizations, multi-national businesses, foreign social service and academic institutions, with newly-arrived elderly immigrants, and in social work education, research, and training. It is concluded that-given global aging-if gerontological social workers do not respond to career opportunities, they will lose out to those from other professions.

Confronting Ageing As A Caribbean Reality, Joan M. Rawlins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article acknowledges the increased life expectancy which Caribbean populations presently experience. It draws upon data collected throughout the region and identifies some of the main concerns which families, communities and governments need to address, in order to ensure that the elderly will not be severely disadvantaged as a consequence of their increased life expectancy. The article recommends closer cooperation between governmental agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) in determining the needs of the elderly, as well as the provision of services for them.

Caregiving For And By Hispanic Elders: Perceptions Of Four Generations Of Women, Juanita L. Garcia, Jordan I. Kosberg, Wiley P. Mangum, Neil Henderson, Colleen Cuervo Henderson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

So as to learn about the experiences of acculturation among older Hispanic women, four generations were interviewed about their ethnic identity, perceptions of gender equity in the home, life satisfaction, and beliefs regarding family caregiving responsibilities. Findings reveal general differences between hopes for, and experiences with, gender equity and in their self-identification as a member of a minority group and their perceptions of others toward them. Differences were also found among the four age groups of Hispanic women.

Supplemental Security Income - An Underused Resource For Disabled Tanf Recipients In Illinois, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Michael A. O'Connor

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

This paper reviews the literature that assesses the incidence of severe impairments among parents and children receiving AFDC and TANF, and projects that analysis to estimate the number of persons eligible for, but not receiving SSI in the Illinois TANF caseload. The paper also reviews current investment in screening for eligibility and pursuing SSI benefits for TANF recipients, and articulates a rationale for further investment. Prior research supports an estimate that between 8-12,000 children, and 4- 18,000 parents in the Illinois TANF caseload are SSI eligible but not enrolled. This paper describes strategies and costs necessary to promote full enrolment …

Background: This study investigates the role of CT and MR imaging in the diagnosis and management of young stroke patients.

Methods: CT scan findings of 108 patients and MR findings of 30 patients between 15-45 years of age were reviewed retrospectively. The variables included the territory of infarct on CT and MR imaging, the cortical distribution and size of infarct.

Results: About 80% of the patients had infarcts of the carotid territory and 20% the vertebro-basilar distribution. More than half of the infarcts were cortical (56%). The yield of MR imaging was much higher for deeper structures such …

Acculturation In Mexican American Adolescents And Its Relation To Perceived Social Support, Rossana Jimenez Mar 1999

Acculturation In Mexican American Adolescents And Its Relation To Perceived Social Support, Rossana Jimenez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Previous research has demonstrated the importance of social support resources for emotional well-being and health, few studies have explored the determinants of social support. A number of factors that can influence Mexican American adolescents' tendencies when seeking help have been studied. Variables such as acculturation, culturally shared beliefs or values, social support systems, and self-esteem may help to better understand such behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of acculturation on perceived social support by adolescents. Specifically, we examine the extent to which gender, acculturation, and age influenced perceived social support of adolescents.

In general, results …

Effect Of High Frequency Vibration On Nerve Excitability, Jeng-Feng Yang, Wen-Shuan Liao, Chang-Zern Hong Mar 1999

Effect Of High Frequency Vibration On Nerve Excitability, Jeng-Feng Yang, Wen-Shuan Liao, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The effect of vibration on the median nerve excitability was studied in 18 healthy subjects by applying the vibrator on the skin overlying either the median nerve or the tendon of flexor digitorum superficialis. The excitability index (EI) was used to assess the median nerve excitability. This index was expressed as the ratio of the amplitude of submaximal evoked compound action potentials (SECAP) before vibration (baseline level) to that during or after the vibration. Comparison between the experimental and the control side showed that vibration over the median nerve did not induce any significant change of EI. However, vibration over …

Sphincter Disturbance As The Initial Presentation Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia:A Casereport, Jen-Wen Hung, Ching-Yuan Kuo, Chau-Peng Leong Mar 1999

Sphincter Disturbance As The Initial Presentation Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia:A Casereport, Jen-Wen Hung, Ching-Yuan Kuo, Chau-Peng Leong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute leukemia is the most common malignancy involving the central nervous system (CNS) among childhood. Neurological manifestations of leukemia frequently occur during the course of acute leukemia. However, it is rarely an isolated feature as the initial presentation of leukemia. The spinal cord and spinal roots are less frequently involved than other CNS regions. It is very rare to have neurologic involvement of conus medullaris as an initial presentation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).This case was a 16 year-old boy who suffered from sever back pain and disturbance of sphincter function before the diagnosis of ALL. The diagnosis of acute …

The Changes Of Femoral Artery Harmonics In Hypoxia:An Animal Study, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yio-Wha Shau, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Juey-Jen Hwang, Chung-Li Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Using the non-invasive method to monitor the pulmonary artery pressure in the exercise training program of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients might reduce the incidence of cardiac complication from the pulmonary hypertension and hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to detect the femoral artery pulse pressure and its harmonic changes of the rabbits in the hypoxia status.Ten rabbits underwent the femoral artery catherization for detecting their femoral artery pressure and their harmonics. Ten percent carbon dioxide mixed gas was inhaled to reduce the oxygen saturation of the rabbits from 95 % to 90% or lower. The mean femoral …

The Compound Muscle Action Potential Dispersion Phenomenon In Normal Young Chinese Population, Chung-Lan Kao, Rai-Chi Chan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The aim of this investigation is to define the normal values and the boundaries of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) dispersion of a specific age group in Chinese population. Measurements were made from median and ulnar motor nerves of 30 normal volunteers, age between 25-35 years. Supramaximal stimulations were applied to wrist, elbow and axilla of median and ulnar nerves individually. Negative peak areas, amplitudes and durations were recorded and the percentage of dispersion were calculated for each parameter. The results show that the percentage of negative duration, amplitude and area decay between wrist and below-elbow stimulation sites are 2.89%, …
