An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Solicitation And Independence On The Determination Of Corporate Bond Ratings, Martin Feinberg Apr 1999

An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Solicitation And Independence On The Determination Of Corporate Bond Ratings, Martin Feinberg

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of solicitation and independence on corporate bond ratings. Moody's, S&P, and Fitch IBCA, are full-scale agencies that provide both solicited and unsolicited ratings. These agencies have the potential to provide biased ratings in both directions. Duff and Phelps provides only solicited ratings. It is the only agency that will honor an issuer's request not to be rated. This fully solicited agency also has the potential to provide biased ratings. Little or no prior research exists in this area.

MCM, an independent rating agency until it was merged into Duff and …

Acid digested brain containing 4 mg added 27Al was ashed at 1000°C to prepare an Al2O3 target for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis of 26Al. A glass-like material usually resulted which was thought to be aluminum (Al) oxyphosphate. The separation of Al and phosphate was investigated. Al, but not phosphate, was bound by a cation exchange resin (AG 50-X8). Hydrofluoric acid eluted the Al from the resin. Removal of phosphate from acid digested brain by this method produced an amorphous material after ashing that was easier to recover from the porcelain crucible and had a …

Trade Liberalization And Environmental Quality: Opposing Viewpoints, Additional Issues, And The Necessity Of Intervention, John R. Ubben Apr 1999

Trade Liberalization And Environmental Quality: Opposing Viewpoints, Additional Issues, And The Necessity Of Intervention, John R. Ubben

Major Themes in Economics

International trade, while promoting economic growth and development, is one of many suspects contributing to excessive rates of environmental degradation. Free trade compromises environmental quality in favor of welfare improvements and economic prosperity. The difficulty of measuring environmental amenities, trade theory’s inability to address externalities and decisions overtime, and numerous market failures regarding socially optimal prices, serve as red flags requiring intervention. The most successful form of intervention is domestic policies that internalize externalities. Intervention is also necessary to balance the interests of environmentalists and free traders and to ensure that the gains from trade are devoted to environmental protection.

Former Employees' Right To Relief Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Donna L. Mack Apr 1999

Former Employees' Right To Relief Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Donna L. Mack

Washington Law Review

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does not state whether a former employee may sue a former employer regarding post-employment fringe benefits. Some courts have held that former employees who are retired or have total disabilities have no right to relief under the statute because they do not meet the ADA's requirement that a claimant be a "qualified individual with a disability." Other courts have concluded that former employees receiving post-employment benefits do have a right to relief under the statute. These courts reasoned that an internal ambiguity in the statute requires courts to look to the legislative history and …

Cueva De Villa Luz, Tabasco, Mexico: Reconnaissance Study Of An Active Sulfur Spring Cave And Ecosystem, Louise D. Hose, James A. Pisarowicz

KIP Articles

Cueva de Villa Luz (a.k.a. Cueva de las Sardinas) in Tabasco, Mexico, is a stream cave with over a dozen H2S-rich springs rising from the floor. Oxidation of the H2S in the stream results in abundant, suspended elemental sulfur in the stream, which is white and nearly opaque. Hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the cave atmosphere fluctuate rapidly and often exceed U.S. government tolerance levels. Pulses of elevated carbon monoxide and depleted oxygen levels also occasionally enter the cave. Active speleogenesis occurs in this cave, which is forming in a small block of Lower Cretaceous limestone adjacent to a fault. Atmospheric …

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner Apr 1999

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner

Masters Theses

This study replicated the effects of differential outcomes on the acquisition of a cocaine-saline discrimination in rats and examined whether learning via differential outcomes (DO) influenced stimulus generalization to other drugs. Previous investigations have suggested that the dopamine (DA) D3 receptor subtype may modulate the reinforcing effects of cocaine. Pharmacological compounds which have been identified as having a greater affinity for DA D3 receptors are 7-OH-DPAT and PD 128907. The present study examined whether the DO conditions applied during training had an impact on the generalization of these test compounds. Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate …

FOCUS on Boise State

As in the story of the lion and the mouse, acts of charity and kindness often have a lifelong impact on both the recipient and the giver. In this issue of FOCUS, we look at volunteerism at Boise State and highlight the generosity and compassion of some members of the Boise State community- including stories about two groups of Boise State students who traveled to Latin America, providing assistance to a Mexican orphanage and an El Salvador hospital.
