Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective The aim of this present study was to evaluate the radiation dose associated with intraoral radiographic techniques. Material and methods The radiation doses were measured at eyelid and thyroid gland, using the alarm digital dosimeter during taking intraoral radiographic techniques; the parallel technique, the bisecting-angle technique and the bitewing technique in different positions of oral cavity. Organ doses were estimated by averaging the readings obtained from digital dosimeter placed in anatomically appropiate positions of 20 patients for each view. The results were presented as the mean dose equivalent per single exposure and the combination dose at various locations for …

A Quantitative Method For Estimating Probable Public Costs Of Hurricanes, Michael R. Boswell, Robert E. Deyle, Richard A. Smith, E. Jay Baker
City and Regional Planning
A method is presented for estimating probable public costs resulting from damage caused by hurricanes, measured as local government expenditures approved for reimbursement under the Stafford Act Section 406 Public Assistance Program. The method employs a multivariate model developed through multiple regression analysis of an array of independent variables that measure meteorological, socioeconomic, and physical conditions related to the landfall of hurricanes within a local government jurisdiction. From the regression analysis we chose a log–log (base 10) model that explains 74% of the variance in the expenditure data using population and wind speed as predictors. We illustrate application of the …

Review of late Holocene paleoenvironmental and cultural sequences from four regions of western North America shows striking correlations between drought and changes in subsistence, population, exchange, health, and interpersonal violence during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (a.d. 800–1350). While ultimate causality is difficult to identify in the archaeological record, synchrony of the environmental and cultural changes and the negative character of many human responses—increased interpersonal violence, deterioration of long-distance exchange relationships, and regional abandonments—suggest widespread demographic crises caused by decreased environmental productivity. The medieval droughts occurred at a unique juncture in the demographic history of western North America when unusually large …

This paper is a case study of Kentucky's attempt to fix not only failing schools but a failing public school system. It reports on the policy making and implementation conundrums of the debate over Kentucky's high stakes accountability system. As a political policy analysis, the study relies on documents, media reports, and interviews with key players to expand understanding of the issues. The paper reports primary and secondary focus group and interview data from a variety of professional educators and parents. The combined frameworks of political culture and authentic policy perspectives are useful for depicting the story of Kentucky's debate …
